Rise of the bots | AI-generated news anchor on television

A leading TV channel from Odisha, Odisha TV has launched a new news anchor this month named Lisa. She is Odisha TV's first AI news anchor! Earlier, India Today group had launched its AI news anchor named Sara.

When Indian broadcaster Odisha TV introduced a new anchor earlier this month, she garnered mixed reviews, from "pathbreaking" to "robotic" and "emotionless."

AI offers a particularly powerful tool for reaching audiences in a country like India, where hundreds of languages are spoken. Even before Lisa popped up on screens, Delhi-based India Today Group had already launched the nation's first AI news anchor, Sana. In addition to presenting news in English, Hindi and Bangla, she has reported the weather and co-anchored programs with other journalists in 75 languages.
AI is taking place of many things, replacing so many technical jobs, no idea how future is shaping up.

Amazing & scary at the same time. This is just v1, so you can still tell it's a fake. But as AI progresses, the differences will be slim.

In a way this is good as there will no blood curling shouts and debates on the news as is the case with many anchors on some channel who shout on the top of their voice. The news will be delivered as it is without any drama.

I wished they made a version of Arnab Goswami instead for a change with a softer voice.

On other hand dreading the fact that Terminator series is happening for real.

Incidentally, I saw an ad for a software that does the same thing for just $200. Both the Oriya TV bot and this one seems to be just a text-to-speech software. I'm not sure how much "AI" is there in this application.

As soon as you visit the link, a caucasian lady starts talking to you in Hindi.

So it looks like this TV channel just selected a bot from the list that has an Indian lady wearing a saree! Or they just created a custom bot by uploading a photo (can be done using the same app).

But if a bot is able to hold an intellectually stimulating discussion with guests like Arnab Goswami does, only then it would make sense to call it "AI bot".

Re: Rise of the bots | AI-generated news anchor on television

Only a question of time before all the news channels start their subscriptions to AI news readers than paying to human news readers. It has become extremely easier to make videos, edit, cancel the wind noise in video, change the background {without a green screen}, change almost anything & everything as much as possible & even add some novelty from the original video footage. Days of Adobe Premiere Pro CC & Final Cut Pro are threatened unless AI algorithms are wound around them

Instead of progress made in AI, I would consider this as more due to progress made in digital animation.

This looks like a normal text to speech software with facial animation. Not sure how much AI is involved here.

AI generated characters are going to take away food from the plates of actors, models and porn stars. Already I see AI generated photos in Instagram feeds that rival real people.

People will soon have their alter egos online than their real self. And that is scarier.

I think the world will soon be a mess.

Amidst all the hullabaloo, I have a different opinion. This could be a fad which will pass, thereby protecting the jobs of humans or with increased complexity, the channels which use less complex ones will become the butt of jokes. This will lead to increased demand for software engineers with "AI" specialization. Old software jobs like manual testing and scrum masters might be extinct in the near future, but it will pave way for demand from a new tech, and those who have the skills will be paid sky-high. In FOMO, all companies will hire such software professionals without having a plan on what to do with them, then a recession will hit once again due to some geopolitical affair, then these guys will be laid-off!

Rinse and repeat!

That's exactly what the current Hollywood SAG-AFTRA strike is all about.
Big media houses are giving contracts to background actors, guest actors, and other actors (small and even big time) which state that their current performance and their likeliness (in perpetuity) is the IP of the media house.

Which will basically mean that a background actor will act once and then never get another role because AI can mimic him/ her.
Even big-time actors can be made irrelevant by this using deepfakes (like they did for Luke Skywalker in The Mandolorian).
Sam L Jackson said in an interview that the moment he sees the words "in perpetuity" he strikes them off his contract.

End result: Media houses will mint money and actors/ writers will be left fending for themselves.

While the sentiment is appreciated, not sure why the 'blood curdling' anchor will not be simulated. It may after all be the more sought after of the off-the-shelf avatars. .
