Re: The sudden onslaught of online spam and scams in India

I am getting calls almost every day saying all my numbers are going to be blocked within 2 hours. Yesterday I got a call informing a problem with a parcel that needs to be addressed urgently. I have been ignoring these calls always but it is getting too frustrating now. On top of that there are calls from supermarkets to tell about offers, calls from credit card people offering EMIs & loans, travel websites giving free holidays etc. The list is endless
It is sad that all we can do is block these numbers and move on. Really wish there was an option to report these numbers and prevent them from spamming less informed people.

They want to get to your credit/debit card credentials. 25 rs is just a sham.
Once successful, the card will be wiped off for the maximum amount possible.

yes, got the card blocked immediately.
Good thing that this card was a standalone credit card not linked to any bank account.

Another thing i observed was that generally when you get an otp for validating the transaction the SMS from the bank also mentions the name of the vendor that is being paid, in this case it didn't mention anything, it just said "OTP for your online transaction of rs25..."

This system has definitely been compromised at multiple levels....

2 years back a friend had booked an Innova for 7 days in Mumbai via online transaction. It was on a shabby looking website. After 10 mins of the transaction, his credit card was emptied to the max running into several lakhs of rupees.

Took him 2 months to get his money back through RBI and local cyber police complaints.

Scammers are smart people and cannot be taken as losers who try only unaware, uneducated people.

When you scam the system!

https://www.onmanorama.com/news/kera...retailers.html

Using ICICI app's schedule transaction later option without even having money in the bank. Funny thing is that it apparently shows a transaction successful message on screen!

Re: The sudden onslaught of online spam and scams in India

I'm facing a strange situation. I'm getting call from my own number. First time when I got call, got cusiours and answered, it turned out to be Aditya Birla Finance, I just disconnected without talking further. Now I'm getting call twice from my own number since two days. I haven't answered. Went to AirTel store and they provided replacement sim card and mentioned it should stop. If still it doesn't stop asked to approach local police. I have been diligently reporting marketing calls via DND app, with this spoofing, it is not possible.
Online, I wasn't able to find much about how to stop spoofing.

Re: The sudden onslaught of online spam and scams in India

Today another new experience with scammers.

I got a call and i received it. An automated voice says "Your HDFC card ending with XXXX has been used to make a transaction worth 43000 at 'some premiummobile.com'. Press 1 if you have done the transaction, or press 9 for customer support"

Now when I make a transaction of bigger amount using my card, a verification call actually comes to prevent any misusage. But i was very much aware that I haven't done any such transaction and also the card no. mentioned is not mine. I just thought it was a mix-up of numbers i.e someone else's card had been transacted and pressed 9. After a while one guy picked up. The way he talked raised a red flag. It was not the usual customer service guy. But I was still feeling secure as to what harm he can do to me.

Then he asked for card number and date of birth. I then remembered one case in which person son providing some card details and Aadhar number lost money. Not willing to take any chance, I immediately disconnected the call.

Re: The sudden onslaught of online spam and scams in India

From past couple of days, I am getting a message that my reward points for xyz credit card is going to expire. First time, it was for one of the bank cards that I normally use but I had not clicked on the link. Today, it was a different card which I do not own.

The reward points are also looking legitimate (8951 first time and 9884 second time)

Re: The sudden onslaught of online spam and scams in India

I have both android & Apple at home, and like me if you aren't keen on installing call filter apps in your phones then Android can give you some respite. It does a great job of blocking known telemarketers. Here it is in action:
  • The first image shows a call from a popular bank and another a telemarketer.
  • The second image shows the setting that can be accessed via the dialer menu.

Note - if you know of such an option in IoS do let me know. I get far too many junk calls on it and will be of great help.

Got this message recently.

From what I understand, Easebuzz is a payment gateway and the message looks legit. But I don't remember making any such transaction on or around that date. What should be my next course of action?

Ignore if no amount is deducted from your bank account or credit cards. Someone might have keyed in a wrong phone number.

Re: The sudden onslaught of online spam and scams in India

Thanks to this thread, I was saved from a FedEx scam. I received a call from +919271920258, and initially I did not answer the call. The caller rang again, and this time I answered. It was an automated message stating that my FedEx package couldn’t be delivered and asking me to press 1 to update my address. I immediately hung up.

To be sure, I checked the official FedEx website, which lists their legitimate contact numbers and email addresses. Sharing the link here for the benefit of others.

Had I not subscribed to this thread, I might have fallen victim to this scam. Stay vigilant!

Re: The sudden onslaught of online spam and scams in India

Guess there is a new scam now

For the second time in two weeks I got a call from +91 96869 26381

Here is how it went :

Caller : Saar, Amazon parcel. Cash on delivery. I am near the gate..

Me : Please come up to the 4th floor

Caller : Saar, what is the amount to be paid?

Me : Where are you?

Caller : I am near the location, can't find the address

Me : Wait, Let me come near the gate, mentioned the address

Caller : Disconnects the call

I walk down to the basement, check around if someone is waiting and try to call up that number. It comes engaged and after couple of tries he answered and says he is coming.

I wait patiently and he doesn't turn up. Try calling again and started getting that number is busy - similar to that disconnect tone if the number is blocked!

Now, I have been a regular customer with Amazon and each and every time when the delivery agent calls, I get a call from the centralised landline number and not individual phone number.

I checked true caller and below is the details

The sudden onslaught of online spam and scams in India-screenshot-20240918-09.45.48.png

Did anyone else get such calls?

The COD scam has been prevalent for some time now.

Faced a similar situation with Delhivery.

But this would be an actual delhivery person delivering a random parcel (in my address) asking for payment since it was a COD consignment.
