Unfortunately, that would be quite impossible, .... unless the writer opted for a sex-change procedure!

I will go with anupmathur - "make someone upset" sounds quite wrong.

The word post is a noun, a verb and important for this discussion, a preposition meaning after. The word after is a preposition and also a conjunction. I don't see it as a big issue if post is substituted for after in contexts where the latter is used as a preposition.

Btw, any (British-style) cryptic crossword enthusiasts here? I had picked up the habit during my student days, but like everything else struggled to find time for it during the "career" rat race. But in December I attended an alumni reunion and managed to connect with a bunch of interested people and now we have a chat group and regular conversations going. We do almost on daily basis, Guardian, Daily Mail (via syndication in Economic Times), G&M (Canada) and SMH (Australia) and several others infrequently. Loads of fun getting back to this habit.

Re: A YetiGuideŽ : How To Post In Proper English

It seems to be a trend nowadays where some people capitalize the first letter of words like son, daughter, wife, car, loan, year, dog, cat, dealership etc, even when the word does not appear in the beginning of a sentence.

Only proper nouns need to have their first letter capitalized regardless of where they appear in a sentence.

Shocking.... you both assumed the gender of author of that article. There is no greater sin these days.

Re: A YetiGuideŽ : How To Post In Proper English

Of late, I have seen a lot of teenagers use Happy Born Day instead of the usual Happy Birthday.

It sounds a bit odd to the ears.

Any thoughts?

Maybe it's just the latest "kewl" trend, to be hip and "with it"?

It, I suppose, is like people nowadays just saying "Because -something-" rather than "Because of -something-"

Cheers

It's rubbish! But what generation of teenagers didn't make up their own lingo? That's life!

Those things die away. Sadly, when the same people start to create their versions of generation-tribe lingo in the marketing and HR departments, they do much more damage to the language.

(Plainly, I am a Grumpy Old Man )

Not a cricketing expert by any stretch (in fact I actively avoid the sport), but I understand the term means a kind of low-on-technique bat-work that resembles the action farmers take with certain farming hand-held tools.

It is apparently the literal translation of the equivalent in certain African and Caribbean languages to English. Example: "Hau'oli La Hanau" in Hawaiian.

This is one of my pet peeve these days. People capitalise random words, some capitalise words they want to stress upon, like themselves or their father/ mother. At the same time they don't capitalise abbreviations, or name of corporations/ companies/ organisations. There is no rule to it. I find it very difficult to read those sentences with random characters going up.

Another pet peeve that I have is no space after punctuation mark, especially after comma and full stop. Even product packaging has this blatant mistake. For example, in the section providing manufacturer's address, capitalisation and punctuation mistakes galore. It looks unprofessional.

Add to that the double full stop..

I hate all people who punctuate with menstrual cycles, period!

Re: A YetiGuideŽ : How To Post In Proper English

Which of these is correct?

1. Processing season may affect the physical features of the product, however, product efficacy remains unchanged.

2. Processing season may affect the physical features of the product however product efficacy remains unchanged.

3. Processing season may affect the physical features of the product, however product efficacy remains unchanged.

I'd say this the closest, with a period or a semi colon in place of the first comma.

Re: A YetiGuideŽ : How To Post In Proper English

From best to worst: 2, 3, 1.

But, to me, it is one of those wouldn't start here questions.

Thoughts:

No commas are necessary. No period before however. However, please note that I started a paragraph, let alone a sentence, with "but" just now, and I think this is fine in the colloquial style of forum posts. But not in formal English. This paragraph is a grammatical mess, but it is chatty English.

I'd use "but" rather than "however."

I'd change the whole thing anyway. Here's an off-the cuff example:

Physical features of the product may be affected by processing season, but its efficacy is unchanged.

Let's try to make that simpler:

This product's appearance may change according to season, but it will always work the same.
