Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

I believe the first mover advantage is the one that works for most of these apps except probably for BHIM. Also earlier these apps would not allow/scan other app based QR codes; but now these days, the process is independent of the app you use.

I use GPay and PayTm almost on an equal basis; but with PayTm I keep the wallet funded (by UPI again) and it helps the transaction become even faster when used for repeat smaller ticket items (like snacks at my office cafeteria).

Question: Has anyone used UPI apps with their RuPay Credit card (instead of savings a/c) linked to their UPI ID? Trying to understand the credit card transaction (via UPI) and the options of additional features like AutoPay and dispute resolution.

Also, the poll needs to have multiple options that can be selected.
+1 to this. I frequently interchange between GPay and PayTm.

Not really evaluated security protocols but I find GPay better off than PayTm. I am able to use a mix of biometrics, pincode/numeric passcode to login into the app plus another passcode/password to authorize the transaction. While this should/would be possible on other apps, I stick to GPay for large ticket transactions for this only.

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

I have been using Google pay for quite a long time. Hence, voted for it. Except rare payment issues, it has worked very well for me. I have a max limit set and that helps me think twice before making big payments. If the app is updated, there is no issue at all.

Here's what I've done, not just to avoid sharing bank details with private companies (you can almost hear Mark and Sundar smirking in the background), but also safeguard my accounts.

I've opened a minimal balance account with an online bank (eg. Airtel / Kotak 811) and linked only that to UPI. That way, not only do I get to choose how much money is exposed to UPI / random QR codes, and all the various scams that come with it, my main bank accounts are also buffered.

I used to heavily use PayTM till a while ago. But have switched to ICICI Bank's iMobile app couple of months ago - find it very convenient (not required to actually login to the app unnecessarily) + quite good in response. No compromise on the security also due to the login pin.

Voted PhonePe. Felt it to be seamless compared to GPay and hardly ever gave trouble. To each, his own.

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

I am using Gpay only as it is quite simple, fast and clean User interface. My pet peeve is that the scratch cards always give better luck next time or max 3 INR. However the biggest fear is it is linked to my bank account and biggest problem is my primary bank account statement is cluttered with lot of small value transactions. So I was looking for alternative option but without any additional bank account and it's KYC hassles.

I found a solution with ICICI Pockets wallet which has UPI option. I believe it is the only wallet that has UPI option. I guess PayTM is with PayTM payments bank which is barred from taking new customers by RBI. No need for separate KYC For Pockets if you link it with ICICI Bank account. You can load the Pockets wallet using your ICICI account or debit card. However the problem is the app is pathetic to load and use. It is slow as well poor user interface to take transaction history or share it. So I switched back to Gpay but hopefully other wallets like Payzapp or PayTM will adapt UPI to delink the bank account from UPI.

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

Over the period of years since the start of UPI, I have used many apps like BHIM, GPay, Amazon Pay, PayTM and Bank apps like HDFC and SBI. As I like to minimize the number of apps on phone, I finally am with Amazon Pay and PayTM. Use them interchangeably but I feel Paytm is faster.

Amazon Pay because it is where I do most of my online shopping and Pay TM because I have Paytm fastag. I avoid installing bank apps on phone.

For members who raised issues of not linking it to main bank account, I recommend opening account with one of payment banks like PayTM and keep 5k to 10k there for these UPI payments.

If you do not wish to open one more account, there is another option. You can do full KYC for Amazon wallet. Once done, this wallet can be recharged with 'money' using netbanking or debit card. This then can be used for UPI payments, without PIN. Please not the Amazon Pay treats this money as separate to what you have using gift cards and refunds etc. The gift card money cannot be used to pay using UPI in stores. Also, this KYC is online KYC so it is convenient and quick.

Also, I have one issue with the implementation of UPI. The account holders have no control over whether you account details should be shared by the bank to NPCI. As I understand, all the accounts are shared with NPCI. Only control user has till you enroll your UPI id with app using debit card. There is no way to opt out of UPI once an account is enrolled, except may be if you are SBI account holder. SBI has an option to block account for use in UPI.

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

Started by using payTM. But later moved to phonePE and GPay since I didnt want to put money in paytm wallet.
I use Gpay for all my bill payments and use phonepe for all other retail transactions. Sometimes one app gives an error and have to retry on another to work.

The payment through credit card is available on scan of PayZapp (HDFC) QR codes through Google Pay. I use it extensively. On PhonePe and PayTM QR codes, the option is not available.

If you have a credit card linked to Google pay and scan QR code of PayZapp HDFC, it will automatically show option of payment through credit card as well as bank account. There might be other QR merchants as well which enable this option.

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

I use Paytm, with a kyc confirmed account, so no issues with using the wallet and topping it from the Paytm bank account. Frankly, I don't see huge differences with other service providers, but since I started off with Paytm, I have stayed on. UPI is a modern Indian fintech revolution that needs to be appreciated for its capability and scalability. I have considerably reduced usage of plastic money endorsed by Mastercard and Visa.

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

I don't use UPI. Am I the only person on this forum to not use it? I am a cash person and use credit/Debit card when needed.

Maybe because I do offline shopping more. I buy household goods from groceries/Kirana shop rather than online as they are cheaper. I buy vegetables/fruits from shop rather than online. I'll always use cash as I want to be out of radar maybe, and don't want third parties like google and walmart to track my spending habits. I even have direct debit set up for my credit card payments and do not use cred or similar ventures for uselss points.

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

Voted Other (BHIM).

I started off with Google Pay, and then installed PhonePe alongside because no one app could deal with dual-SIM phones. Ditched PhonePe first because it started pushing its lead-generation nonsense at me. Google Pay went because of its refusal to maintain my frequent payees lists the way I want them. After looking at all other options I chose BHIM - and got myname@upi easily memorised VPA in the bargain.

Pros: It is the reference implementation so new features arrive first on BHIM. I have my Netflix subscription being paid automatically each month without my intervention; I don't think any other app has this feature yet? Also there is UPI Lite which is basically an in-app wallet that can process small ticket payments (below Rs. 200) without the full UPI validation process.

Cons: QR scanning could be slow/temperamental. Could be the fault of my phone camera too. Also the UX for IFSC/AccountNo payment could be improved.

PS: My wife is finding WhatsApp pay fantastic for person-to-person payments (she still uses Google Pay for person-to-business payments though).

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

I was an early adapter of UPI. I had even used MCHEK from airtel wayback in 2008(pre-smartphone era). I use UPI enabled bank accounts from Axis, ICICI and Kotak, but use them only for high value transactions and transactions which are needed by chartered accountant, for IT returns filing.

All other expenses I use Paytm app - it has convenience of a 1.Payment bank(I maintain about 5k balance in it), 2.UPI linked to this payment bank(can even receive small payments using our qr code), 3.Wallet( I do not use this nowadays), 4.Postpaid(it is like a low value credit card with upi blend).

PayTm has its own glitches but mostly uptodate with the options for various bill payments, when routine native apps/websites do not work. Payment bank helps me protect my regular bank accounts from unwanted exposure.

I use samsung pay for credit card tap and pay purpose. It has a very easy gesture opening. Card is protected by our fingerprint or pattern. Additional safety is in the way of tap and pay limit of 5k per day per card. So maximum risk is for 5k. Add on convenience tap and pay does not require internet connection and Paytm Payment bank upi can be linked to Samsung pay for payments to be done quickly(like in airports or railway stations).

Avoided using Phonepe and Gpay as small value transactions clutter our bank accounts.

Not sure if you specifically meant Netflix but I pay my Spotify subscription each month via Gpay automatically. Have been doing so ever since the RBI circular stopped recurring card payments.
