Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Webseries Name : Paatal Lok Season 2
Language : Hindi
Genre : Thriller
OTT : Amazon Prime

My Rating : 3.75 / 5

If my rating was 4.5 / 5 for Season 1 then for Season 2 I had to drop 0.75 rating from Season 1. Make no mistake Paatal Lok season 2 is still one of the best webseries that has come recently, however comparison with season 1 is inevitable. I thought they could have kept the story a bit simple rather than bringing all kind of stuff. Nevertheless if you have seen Season 1 then you should watch Season 2.

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

I finished season 2 of Paatal Lok over the weekend. As a stand alone piece it's quite well done. The screenplay especially, the shooting locations and the cinematography are all highlights. Acting, well Ahlawat leaves everyone in the dust. However, and this is a big one, its not a patch on season 1. Season 1 had at least 4 different episodes (each conveying a backstory of a character that becomes central to the story) in 4 different places - I especially recall the one set in rural punjab. Also, the individual characters had more depth, were meaner in their own right - lots of grey in each character. Here, its more black and white. Somehow, while the season remains very watchable it lacks the gut-punch quality of season 1. So I'd rate it 3.5/5. YMMV.

Paatal Lok - 4.5/5

Who is Jaideep Ahlawat? Dont know who he is, but Hathiram Choudhary (PL), Shahid Khan (GoW-1), the RAW instructor in Raazi, the CBI officer in Gabbar is Back, Bhoora in An Action Hero, or Dr.Sudhir in Lust Stories - they all are familiar though released atleast 3-12 years before. Thats what my friend said when asked of the actor.

The man is born to live roles like Fahadh. He may not have expressive eyes like him, but his battle hardened face and constitution says everything. Sorely missed the raw "pistol chahiye?" scene and loved the repetition of the "suspended" dialogue. The season 1 to 2 was like the transition of the desmodromic 1200S (bombastic!) to V4S (great!). The locations chosen in the NE were picturesque and the way he pieces clues together is fantastic. The humorous comebacks rounded off the gruff, disappointed but at it character. Ishwak as Ansari, Virk and the others played their roles to perfection. A must watch.

Now, except Rajkummar Rao and Definite, all of the main GoW characters have their own shows on Prime or Netflix. Bloody good actors who were missed due to the bollywood PR and nepotism, beautiful to see these actors coming to the mainstream and wish them more success on the silver screen too, a refreshing change from the done to death usual plots of the khans and kapoors.

Finally finished watching the final season. Boy, what an ending.

PS: I have also watched the prequels 1883 and 1923. They are great too.
Thanks Samurai. Could you please let me know where did you watch all the seasons? Netflix India has only 3 seasons. I've watched all 3 and dying to watch the rest of the seasons.

Also, please let me know where did you watch the prequels as well. Thank you.

For season 5, I managed to get VPN access to Canada thanks to a friend. Yeah, it is quite a struggle to get access otherwise. I had watched 1883 and until YT season 4 on Prime before they removed it. The show 1923 is on JioCinema.

Black Bird
OTT : Apple TV+
4/5

This is a psychological crime drama series based on true events. The show is about a drug dealer who, after receiving a ten-year prison sentence, is given a chance at freedom if he can extract a confession from a suspected serial killer.

I found the show incredibly captivating and intense, though it does delve into some darker elements as well.

American Primeival

Netflix

Western

This series was recently on Netflix and was a very good watch. Set in the Midwest (1857) ,there is a lot of gore and violence as the title would reveal. I had a good time watching it and saw the whole thing in a couple of nights.

Cheers

Quite a rivetting series about the world's most famous assassin played by Eddie Redmayne. The series is a masterclass and keeps you glued through all the episodes. There is a softer side of the assassin also shown. The cat and mouse game between the assasin and the agents is very well depicted.

Rating: 4/5

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

When I watch web-series or movies, I watch it with full attention, else, I just don't. I wait for the perfect time when I can free my mind of all other stuff and really get into that 'zone'.

With that said, I finished watching Squid Games season one last week
Quite late to the party, but what a series! I have a fair idea on why people are going crazy over K-Drama on Korean content in general.

Was about to start second season but got interrupted by Patal lok !

Just yesterday I started watching it and boy it has got me riveted once again. Seems to be another masterclass. I am done watching first two episodes.

I and my wife were watching this yesterday, there is one scene (no spoiler), where Hathiram gives salutes IPS officer Ansari while leaving office, and for half a second, Hathiram stays in that position. A brief pause, where his eyes do all the acting. I will even go as far to say this : Jaideep Ahlawat's eyes in Patallok == Cilian Murphy's eyes in Peaky Blinders.

Wished this series become a global success, just like Squid Games.
