It's that time of the year again, when everyone's favourite deity blesses us with His presence at home.

From early childhood, I have extremely fond memories of all the preparations we did to welcome Bappa.

Step one: Selection.
Baba would take me and my brother to select the Moorti. Invariably an argument would ensue between us brothers over it. Baba would give us a few minutes till he invoked his veto power. Once selected, he would ask us to measure the Moorti (without touching it of course) and write down the dimensions.

Step two: Decoration
Another argument would break out over the type of decoration. In this one, we were left to fend for ourselves with a reminder, that the decoration needs to be ready by a certain date.
Measure twice, cut once. Baba would remind us and coax us to "model" our decoration ideas on paper, with proper dimensions. Once he confirmed our math, we would begin with gusto.
The next few days the house would be infested with thermocol, glitter, glazed paper, electric lights and what not. Finally (with a little help from Baba) we would be ready. Then we would invite Aai (she was strictly banned from seeing the work in progress) to admire our handiwork and give the official seal of approval.

Step three: Bringing Bappa home.
Usually when we came home from school, the norm was to dump our school bags, hastily change out of school uniform and rush out to play with friends.
But on Trutiya, we would rush to have a bath and be ready. Soon Baba would arrive home, have his bath and all of us would set out to bring Bappa home.
Once we came back, the Moorti would be carefully placed surrounded by our decoration, and we would ooh and aah and ogle and admire how beautiful and just perfect everything looked.
Even the gentle smile on Bappa's face would assure us of his satisfaction at our efforts.

This year, Baba has departed to stay with Bappa, so Bappa won't be coming to stay with us.

We live right on the beach, hence watching Ganpati Visarjan is a wonderful annual experience! For the entire period of 10 days, there are a lot of festivities in the area. It's a week+ of prayers, music, dance & sweets! For those not from Bombay, here's a video:

Happy Ganesh Chaturthi, guys! I'm going to miss the grand drum beating processions - it's the first non-covid year (w/o bans) out of MH for me after a long time.

I hope all you guys are option for eco-friendly options for your respective ganpati moorti(s). Especially with regards to Bombay, folks there have been doing a fine job cleaning up their beaches (thanks to Afroz Shah and his movement) - I hope the coming week doesn't turn back their efforts.

@GTO, I always wondered this for folks living next to the sea - what's been the impact (historically) post the visarjan days? Or do things go back to BAU-mode the next day itself?

We have had the lord gracing our home since last year. The murti is of red soil and we only do home immersion. The left over soil goes to our society garden.
