Carlos Ghosn: The Last Flight | A BBC Documentary

This one's right up the auto connoisseur's alley. Started watching this series Carlos Ghosn: The last flight. The 'man' narrates his trying ordeal, and is a BBC production. First episode is very grippy, so far so good

Any idea how to watch it here in India? I googled for it and the BBC website says it's available only in the UK. Thanks in advance.

Watched the full episode in ONE GO. Gripping story. How you become a pawn of hostile and insecure govts. Sad part is, even if you assume that the CEO has bought flats in his name from companies money, they can magnanimously ask him to step down and take over the properties. There is no need to arrest him, put him in prison and deny his human rights.

And if they had proofs why do they want him to confess. Go ahead and prosecute. Japan's reluctance in prosecuting but only interest in keeping him under arrest raise suspicion.

But the world is never fair!

Thanks for sharing the documentary. The story of the opposite party to Carlos Ghosn is Hari Nada. That story is told here in this Bloomberg article. Very interesting read: https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2...n-nada-nissan/

Re: Carlos Ghosn: The Last Flight | A BBC Documentary

Just finished the documentary. There is certainly a strong case for the conspiracy element and Japan's brutal 99.4% conviction rate doesn't really help.

But Carlos' freedom came at huge collateral damage for others - his lawyers, the ex-Green Beret 'helper' (who got him out of Japan and was extradited by the US to Japan), the American guy who is standing trial in Japan right now etc. Does the freedom of Carlos justify this enormous cost borne by others?

All I see is a very egoist & self-centered man who never cared about the lives of others in the first place (they were always collateral damage for him, whether when it was during the restructuring of Renault or Nissan). So, even though he was wrongly accused because of a geopolitical powerplay, he didn't hesitate to throw others under the bus just so that he can be free.

Instead of blaming Carlos, the blame lies on the foot steps of Japanese judicial system.
The people who helped knew consequences and I suspect they were paid handsomely.

The Japanese were scared that the French, in collusion with Ghosn, would own their prized Nissan

That is a fact. Was listening to a 3 part HBR podcast about the man. Initial years are brilliant but after that he became egoistical and disconnected. Some examples
  • Lavish spending on company expense
  • When a Nissan factory got affected by the Fukushima Tsunami. He made no attempt to visit the factory and give morale support. He only appeared when they recommissioned the factory in double quick time and took the credit for it.
  • He put a whole bunch of Yes men on the board

It's true what you say. The heady story of one of the most powerful industry executive (in the limelight back then), is about power, money, corruption and International politics. It's intriguing because such a 'Bond like' instance has rarely been told, if ever. The fact that Ghosn himself is 'front and centre' revealing the events makes this a special watch

Re: Carlos Ghosn: The Last Flight | A BBC Documentary

Watched the documentary & loved it. However, it is totally a one-sided story by Carlos Ghosn. Neither Nissan nor the Japanese government really presented their case (for legal reasons). A daring & brave move it was to escape the country in that manner. Imagine if he was caught in that box, we would all be saying "what a stupid guy to attempt something like this". But he did it. Takes guts.

I have read a lot on the case and am convinced that Carlos did in fact misuse Nissan's money for personal gains. He was also extremely complexed by how much other auto CEOs are paid, especially in the USA.

While I love Ghosn for his cost cutting skills, he is better as a CFO than a CEO. He has single-handedly driven Nissan into the ground. In the 90s & early 2000s, Nissan was known as the smaller Japanese company that built different, durable, stylish fun-to-drive cars. Today, in most big markets, Nissan is doing poorly, thanks to uninspiring products, heavy discounting, missed car segments and suspect financing. Even in India, they almost died and have only just emerged from the ICU, thanks to the Magnite. That stupid "Datsun" brand plan was also thanks to Carlos.

Carlos Ghosn & Sergio Marchionne are the most overrated auto CEOs in history.
