Gurgaon gets 2 new grain-dispensing ATMs

In line with the UN food security program, Gurugram(Gurgaon) has got 2 new grain dispensing ATMs. These are automated multi-commodity grain dispensing systems inaugurated (not sure of who installed - may be HR govt.) by Haryana govt.

These machines can dispense upto 70 kgs/minute from the hopper. Authentication is biometric once the Aadhar or ration card number is entered into the touch screen interface. This will need some getting used to and some one to guide as the people who depend on this PDS are mostly from lower socioeconomic background where the digital divide poses issues with knowhow to operate these machines.

The govt. claims that it will reduce wait times, queues and also all human related issues. But authorities must see that the employment of current PDS distributers are at least converted to maintaining these machines. This means re-skilling of current employees.

Also, I feel this will still introduce some form of "jugaad" employment like when Indian Railways introduced automated ticket vending machines. There were incentives for smart card recharges and some people started manning these machines and getting some living out of it in spare times. This benefits old people who can't grasp immediately the use of the machines.

Also with any introduction of new technology, the cons too start pulling stunts in new ways to dupe people. So, its effectiveness is to be seen.

Nevertheless a progressive and much needed move.
