The poster actually does mention it- it will be via FM.
They will have a FM transmitter broadcasting at a particular frequency that you would tune to on your car's audio system. Though, what approvals they would have to use such a broadcast is a different question. I guess it would be low enough power to not need any approvals.

Back in 2000s, iPod's used to have a popular accessory, an FM transmitter that will plug into 3.5mm audio jack of iPod and let you listen to iPod using your car audio system.

Re: Drive-in cinemas in India

Mumbai will soon have a Drive In Screen - most probably it will be operational towards the second half of 2021, if all permissions are in place. This will be operated by PVR and located at the terrace level of the new mall known as - Jio World Drive. It is scheduled to be the first Roof Top cinema in the country with a capacity to hold 295 cars and be operational for 280 days in a year (proposed)

The medium of audio transmission is being evaluated between FM or Bluetooth.

This mall is being constructed at the mixed use development known as Maker Maxity located at BKC. This site as mentioned earlier in thread used to house the original Drive In Cinema.

Indeed we are getting a Drive In Theatre at Bandra Kurla Complex.
The experience is going to commence very soon and personally very excited for the same. It is going to be nostalgic as there use to be one open theatre in Mumbai which as a child I could only hear stories about but never experience it.
With most cars now having good audio setups from car brands, would be great if the theatre has a bluetooth setup where the audio can be played via the car's head unit.

Re: Drive-in cinemas in India

We did experience Drive-In Theatre @ Jio World (BKC, Mumbai).

A customary pros and cons list is limited to Jio World Drive-In Theatre only.
(Note: It was my first time experiencing any Drive-In till date).

Pros :-
  • Sitting areas are present, hence makes an option available for sitting outside car.
  • There are executives on field to offer help.
  • Lights used for demarcating, looks uber cool.
  • Executives were bringing dustbins to those who ordered beverages and/or snacks.
  • The rows are elevated similar to indoor theatres, thus minimising obstruction.

Cons :-
  • No directions to the Drive-In. But being the second day of opening and executives on the ground guiding, expecting the same to improve.
  • No speakers are provided to the individual car, instead they have fitted JBL speakers.
  • SQ isn’t to the ATMOS level (ofcourse) and radio frequency has distortion too. IMHO it’s average, and not something one will enjoy while watching a movie.
  • Almost impossible for rear seated passengers to view from inside the car (not sure whether this point deserves to be here).
  • Ordering beverages and snacks is a hassle. As per one of the executive, they were facing issues with food orders from the app, and the management is in resolving the same.

Opened in 1991, this still exists and a very popular one. It gives a fantastic experience very different to the multiplex/theater screens.
RIP to Prathana Drive-in Theatre. I think most people who grew up in Chennai in the 90s/2000s and had a car would have visited this theatre.
  • It was ahead of its time.
  • It didn't offer a good audio/visual experience but offered something that was unique.
  • It didn't keep up with the times and naturally died.
India’s first beach drive-in theatre and an iconic Chennai landmark in the 1990s, Prarthana Beach-Drive-in theatre is all set to make way for a premium residential complex.
