How the internet & social media create instant celebrities

With the advent and proliferation of social media, people of the current times definitely do not face the challenges faced by the people of pre-internet era when they need a platform to showcase someone's talent or anything interesting that they come across. Its result : Thousands of new instant celebrities born every few weeks whose celebrityness lives only for a few days. Here is the latest from Kerala.

What did he do?

A video of him driving an Innova out of a tight parking space went viral. 2 days later, a video of him parking that Innova at the same spot surfaced, but this time there were more offline audience to see him perform the act - teens, many people, who had earlier seen the viral video had come to the location to catch the man in the act. Scrolling down through my FB feed, there he is, in Manorama News - a major media house.

Internet really is wonderful thing.

Absolutely. There is pure joy on that man's face and it doesn't seem like he's "doing it for the likes".

Here's another lovely couple that got really famous when their daughter uploaded the video online.

And another of theirs.

re: How the internet & social media create instant celebrities

Since the advent of JIO, internet celebrities have become a real thing. While the YouTubers and some Social influencers took their own time to get recognition, here's a few INSTANT internet celebrities who gained fame well, instantly.

While she may have been already a celebrity in God's own country, her famous wink made her an overnight sensation. The popularity went to such a level that she broke the record of gaining most followers in 24 hours on instagram

Priya Prakash Varrier

Remember the Jolly uncle who mesmerized us all with his crazy dance moves? Well he's nothing short of a celebrity now, he even got to meet his idol on a reality show.

Now last but definitely not the least here's someone who definitely doesn't need any introduction

With the cut throat competition amongst the telecom giants and wider connectivity throughout the country fame is not as hard to earn as it used to be although good/bad. Remember the RCB girl or that hilarious lady offering us tea

On second thought, I think we may have done a slight injustice to these two couples by including them on this thread.

There's clearly three types: one that do this for the thrill to be popular on social media. All the clowns that do stupid TikTok videos, challenges (kiki etc.) just for people to like them.

Another that are on social media to photo/video blog. There are so many people who do this to post about their lives. Eg. there are scores of pilots and stewards/stewardesses with pages.

A prime objective of these two categories is to monetize it. Just look at how social media influencers get freebies (the current popular is Dyson which seems to be handing out their products to several B'wood celebs) in return for subtle/blatant advertising.

Then there's our beloved Govinda uncle or the Sikh couple I mentioned who just got famous because people loved their video.

Some of the YouTubers mentioned above can't be called instant celebrities, right, social media celebrities, yes. Most of them on the list have worked hard to achieve the success.

Yes they have worked hard but it depends on one's own definition of "instant".

We, our parents, our grandparents, would have achieved the same kind of success after years and years of hard work and toiling. And the new age Youtubers/Social media "influencers" have the same kind of success, fame and money within just span of 2-3 years of their online careers. That's why i call them instant celebrities.

This is the whole point.
These are like cheap thrills. These wont last long. To be a long standing celebrity one needs real quality. If we see the history, none of them have been popular for more than a year or so.

Re: How the internet & social media create instant celebrities

It was interesting to read that Biju, the Innova Parking Video guy, was felicitated by the local Toyota dealership for the parking skills displayed. Who would have thought driving a bus and the said experience contribute to becoming a parking ninja. Also, turns out that it was his spouse who taped the initial parking video.

Re: How the internet & social media create instant celebrities

The people mentioned above sure had some talent which made them famous, though instantly. For example, the parking guy could, umm, park. Govinda uncle danced really well for his age and physique, so did the old couple. Dhinchak Pooja well, sing of sorts (search cringe pop and you'll be amazed), and Priya Prakash Varrier despite her winking, 'acted'. Her acting skills can give a couple of A-listers in bollywood a run for their money.

Most of these youtubers have worked hard and there's nothing 'instant' about their popularity. Just that their target audience is too wide. For example, Technical Guruji started decent quality reviews IN HINDI which was missing before. Every good quality tech review video used to be in English, and Hindi channels, though scarce could not catch up on quality. And Carryminati, a 1999 born kid has this amazing talent of hurling abuses on screen which can bring the biggest of crime lords to shame, and which their target audiences find cool. Point is, all of these youtubers above have worked hard on refining their talent and have a huge target audience, and isn't just an instant thing.

The biggest instant social media celebrity in my opinion is Ms. Deepika Ghose. She's popularly known as the RCB girl. She might have 10 skillsets, no offence to those, but her rise to fame was being seen on TV momentarily cheering up for RCB in IPL match as an audience.

On May 4, 2019 during an IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Indian audience was introduced to a new face who instantly became an Internet sensation.

Within minutes, netizens had traced the girl on social media and invaded her privacy.

While some trolled her for attracting unwanted attention, there were thousands who followed her on Instagram, turning her into a mini celebrity.

Today, she has over 3 lakh followers on Instagram.
Source

So a person gets huge fan following and her privacy is invaded, just because a camera swept by her. She gets more than 3 lakh followers overnight on instagram and got a blue tick (verified account, which is more for celebrities). She is using it to some extent, reshaping her feed, became an influencer, showcasing her other skillsets and subsequent ventures, in short monetising the fame in a positive way. However, her insta bio still reads: #theRCBgirl. I mean, there are genuine people who work day in day out for years to get this follower base and maybe decades to get a verified account. Netizens served it to her on a silver platter.

The internet globally is filled with many similar incidents. And many people selfishly do this as well. Being someone from this field, I once was closely observing a couple of accounts involved with a sensational video of 'abusing a lady publicly by other ladies' (who was right and who was wrong is a different story) but those 3-5 ladies became famous, deleted all their previous random 'personal in nature' posts, made their feed look professional (one became a foodblogger, other became maybe a fashion designer/lifestyle influencer and started sharing their works, etc. as all of them had at least 10-20k followers added due to the incident in just 2-3 days without any ad spend who otherwise had something between 1000-5000 followers. At times there's a similar pattern. Internet is unpredictable. Recent examples are Kokila ben video (still a display of talent) and the cringeworthy 'BINOD'

Re: How the internet & social media create instant celebrities

There are two types of social media celebrities - one who are genuinely talented, have worked hard to get where they are & put out quality content; the second type is the absolutely non talented attention seekers with pathetic tastes, & these are the ones who get my goat.
What amazes me is how the extremely mediocre content posted by the latter category turns viral. Just goes on to show how much the general public lacks constructivity in their spare time & make "celebrities" out of garbage bin category content creators. While some truly gifted individuals never get the attention they deserve. A truly sad state of affairs.

Re: How the internet & social media create instant celebrities

Upfront notice - I am not on Twitter, FB or Instagram and aim to keep it that way. Whats App I have to use as far too many others are using it for business & professional communication.

I have nothing for or against either the social media content creators or the viewers or those who become celebrities for a brief moment. But this phenomena reminds me of a famous quote

"In the Future Everyone Will Be Famous for 15 Minutes"
Andy Warhol, American artist, writer and film director; 1968

Life is a 75 to 90 year game. If you achieve mind numbing fame for a brief 6 to 18 months at the age of 22 it cannot but wobble your expectations of yourself and your understanding of the effort vs reward equation for a substantial part of your life. Some of these folks are talented in a cottage industry sort of a way. I'm sure they work hard but what they are contributing to society are fleeting moments of entertainment. One thing I like is that it has given an avenue of expression to young people from the lower social and economic rungs of our society. In that way social media is a wonderful leveler and a tool for positive empowerment.

Maybe I'm just an old sourpuss.

Re: How the internet & social media create instant celebrities

Trust me - anything that is as meager as parking or reversing without even looking at camera is viral these days

In the earlier days, cars with no assistance at all were being driven brilliantly. Internet makes anything look so big! I am not undermining any skills of the driver who parked it so meticulously but if you’re used to parking in any tight space everyday in and out, you’ll get that gauge easily.

Actually, in Kerala too, she became a celebrity only after her famous wink. That movie was a flop and no one talks about her anymore.
