You can still buy physical gold coins from jewellery shops. But making charges for coins is there and will vary widely. Tanishq charges 8% for 22kt coin. GRT charges around 3%. Malabar doesn't charge during festival times. Kalyan generally doesn't charge making charges.

I am not a big fan of online purchases of gold though I heard Bangalore refinery is good.

Please note there is a 3% GST as well in physical gold in both offline and online modes. Many credit card folks accumulate vouchers with accelerated rewards and buy them in Amazon and sell it later.

Also, if the goal is to use in future for jewel making or exchange, my pick is 22 carat as jewellery is generally made in 22 carat though other variants exist.

MMTC PAMP will continue operations due to the entity's ownership structure. MMTC owns only 26% of the JV while 72 % is with PAMP, a private swiss company.

As I have mentioned earlier on this thread, the govt's intent remains to get out of retail business in gold and silver if you see the steps taken about SPMCIL as well.

Re: The Gold Investment Thread

Quick update- significany volatility in both gold and silver markets continue. Daily price swings of 2% or more in Silver are not uncommon. In Gold as well, 1% common but can go up to 2%. Is anyone correlating these with geopolitical events - e.g. when Israel Hezbollah ceasefire was approved by Israeli cabinet, gold corrected by 1.5-2% depending on the instrument of choice. Next two days, it was back up. What other such events do readers see in future? I think till Jan 20th this yo-yo will continue but I really am struggling to see beyond that....thoughts?

Re: The Gold Investment Thread

I was planning to make small investments in gold every month. The digital gold option in amazon pay caught my attention. When I checked it, it was linked to

https://www.safegold.com/

Has anyone tried this? Is safegold really safe? The advantage I see here is, I can convert my savings to physical gold and get it delivered at my door step.

Re: The Gold Investment Thread

If you are interested in digital gold, tanishq also has it. There are many other players of course.

Personally, I'd sleep better going with a trusted brand if a digital product is unregulated (via RBI / SEBI) etc.

Remember that your yield will be lower due to GST the moment you invest (this doesn't apply to SGB and ETF) and yet you do not have the product in hand as in case of Physical (where you pay GST and making but get the custody)

You can replicate this via Gold ETF too, but it is just a simple 3 step process (1) Sell Gold ETFs (2) Transfer money to bank (3) Buy Gold coins/bars

Preliminary checks show they have strong intent to be a serious player:

- Funded by private equity
- WGC is apparently an investor too
- Gold secured by Brinks
- Partnerships like Amazon/PhonePe/Flipkart/Croma etc

But simply the fact that it is neither physical asset (nothing in hand) or financial asset (no entry in NSDL statement) is a serious negative. It becomes an investment based on an investor's trust on a private corporation.

They have this unusual "Gold Lease" scheme where 3% interest is paid out (in the form of Gold)

Haven't heard of Safegold; however you can alternatively check out Tanishq. They have a Digital Gold option as well, plus you get the added benefit of a retail presence if you ever need to sell it. Going with a reputed and known brand is always a safe bet.

Thanks for your valuable suggestions. I checked Tanishq just now and it is powered by SafeGold as well.
There is an option in SafeGold where you can accumulate gold and use it to make payment at Tanishq store or online and convert it into Jewellery.
Looks like all the major players AmazonPay, Tanishq etc are powered by SafeGold.

Really appreciate taking your time for checking this. Will consider the Gold ETFs for sure. An SIP on Gold ETFs seems promising.
The only advantage I see in Safe Gold is that I can invest really small amounts whenever I can on AmazonPay and then gift it to someone on a occassion as physical gold.

Not sure if you remember Gullak. Remember reading your post long back. Looks like they are majorly into this leasing business. Reviews say leasing is better in Gullak than SafeGold.

Re: The Gold Investment Thread

I would be very very careful before putting in my money into any of these leasing platforms. I have closely monitored, installed apps of, agonized over and finally not given into temptation over last 2 years.

What's the general take on buying Gold on Google Pay through the gold Locker (MMTC-PAMP)? I have used it in the past but with zero research. Anything one should be aware of?

Centre discontinues Sovereign Gold Bond scheme due to high cost of borrowing.

Re: The Gold Investment Thread

With Mr. Trump taking a wrecking ball to the global economy, it would seem like gold prices should rise, at least temporarily as investors move away from stocks.

Longer term is very hard to say. Remember, the point isn't if gold prices go up relative to the INR - the point is if your money could have made better returns in stocks, property, FD, etc.

Re: The Gold Investment Thread

Several posts here on RoI on a Gold based investments and its comparison with stocks etc. This is the way today's new breed of so called wealth advisors follow. I have been investing since 1985 and saving since 1982 and thought I'd share my perspective for the benefit of our younger members who are new along their journey of investments.

Investments are like the food we eat. We need a balanced share of proteins, vitamins, iron, grains etc to be healthy. Each has a role to play. Too much or too little of any one ingredient is harmful.

Similarly some investments are solely for security, the proverbial rainy day which hopefully never comes -- gold and the house you live in are in that category. Some investments are for generating an income -- pension plan annuities, fixed deposits, debt funds belong here -- you need less of them when young and more of them after retirement. And then you have the need for growth investments that will grow your wealth ahead of the inflation curve - stocks and sometimes real estate. So gold has a role to play up to a point. What is that point is for each individual to decide. I kept it at less than 5% of my conservative net worth {counting real estate and unlisted stocks at original price}. And being a security asset it was only bought and touchwood thus far never sold.

For those of us who have lived a stable existence we may sneer at gold. For those who had to escape with their lives*, gold is manna. Advertisers who push gold as a RoI investment do it a disservice. Over some periods of time it can give a rich RoI. Over very long periods of time it almost always gives a solid RoI as SmartCat explained. But you buy it for security not RoI. RoI is an added bonus. To be a real security old timers like me prefer the metal to a derivative instrument.

* the displaced in Assam, Manipur; the Kashmiri Pandits who had to escape from Kashmir in 1990/1991; our parents generation who escaped in 1947 from what is now Pakistan.
