Mysterious booms are a worldwide phenomenon now, it has happened in our country before. I remember one happening in Jaipur. But because people have no idea about what it is, it is never a point of discussion and hence is forgotten in no time.

Conspiracy theorists link it with UFOs and probably they are correct, infact there are videos where UFOs were spotted right after the boom. It's a sound they make when they enter our atmosphere at speeds we can't probably know for sure right now, some say it's because of wormholes. But this still remains a conspiracy theory. Many YouTube channels who were consistently following it and gathering data were deleted some time back as well.

Another theory is that the mystery boom is the sound caused by the bursting of a meteorite inside earth's atmosphere. There is even a video of same phenomenon, from Russia I believe.

Some discussion about how long sonic boom lasts. Whereas the size of the aircraft does matter in absolute term it doesn’t. Sonic boom for all intents and purpose are very short!

According to most sources: less than a second, 100 milliseconds (0.1 second) for most fighter-sized aircraft and 500 milliseconds for the space shuttle or Concorde jetliner.

So it is literally like a very loud very large cannon going off. Anything else, eg a roar it means it wasn’t a aircraft flying supersonic.

It is also not just the aircraft braking the sound barrier. As soon as it breaks the sound barrier and speeds above the sonic boom will be very present and audible. The geographical spread is depended on several factors, but it will always be very short and very loud!

It did. But there are people who say they hear this everyday when jets take off. As I said before the roar or the jet engine noise when they take off or even when they are stationary is louder and earth or building shattering. I heard this everyday when my office was next to HAL airport. The sonic boom was different, its what was heard not near landing or takeoff. And it was heard in far off places like a explosion.

Yes, the jet sounds are kind of long and drawn out. This is quite some mystery.
