Indian doctor gets 100-car salute for treating Covid-19 patients

Dr. Uma Madhusudan, a doctor of Indian origin got a 100-car salute in recognition of her service treating over 200 patients suffering from Covid-19 in the USA.

Dr. Madhusudan, who hails from Mysore, works at the South Windsor Hospital. She was recognized as one of the unsung heroes fighting the pandemic by the local authorities.

A video posted on Twitter shows a number of private cars, police cars and fire trucks driving past her house honking and with sirens blazing. Some even get down from their cars to place "Thank You" placards. Her neighbours can also be seen waving and appreciating the work she has done for the community.

I did see this video on YouTube. A very proud moment for her. And a salute from myself too.

Lovely to see the people recognizing the unsung heroes. Things like this gesture contribute to also bring some positive vibe in the routine of all people around during times of current gloom & uncertainty.

I sincerely hope the following 2 things being currently practiced and seen, stick with the people and continue to be practiced even after the COVID-19 emergency is overcome and subdued -
  1. Respect of personal & social hygiene, effort to maintain cleanliness everywhere by all people.
  2. Respect & appreciation towards all public service personnel - medical workers, police, sanitation workers, all those who are providing essential services while taking serious personal risks.

Societies all over the world (and more so us in India) have consistently ignored valuable contributions of these unsung heroes. Maybe we can change this as an outcome of this pandemic. Something good to take along!

Meanwhile in India...

Can anyone blame the young doctors who wish to settle abroad where the society has better appreciation for the work they do.

Edit: When i saw the news what hit me the most was the stark contrast the way the doctors are treated by society here in our country for the similar if not the same work they do in this COVID crisis. I just could not help not posting this.

In India, We doctors get a 100 Slap Salute. As a bonus, we also fail to get safety equipment, get thrown out of our accommodations which are converted to quarantine facilities, our house neighbours fear us for we might infect them hence abuse/threaten us. We also are overworked while being completely underpaid in a govt/municipal setup. Despite facing all of this, TV shows like Satyamev Jayate question our intentions and conclude that we should work for free as ours is a noble profession, seriously as if we don't have our family and stomach to feed.

The best part? We take it all with a smile, making our patients priority with their improving health being our biggest reward.

That’s sweet.

It’s really not easy for anybody who is working amidst all this scenario, be it the police, medical people, guys at the petrol pump etc. After all, everyone is a human, everyone is a mortal.

On the other hand, medicos and policemen are attacked at times. Disheartening.

Re: Indian doctor gets 100-car salute for treating Covid-19 patients

I would not want me to be hailed a hero, come whatever may. As an ICU specialist, let me say the nurses are the real heroes, but sadly it’s us doctors who hog the lime light. That really upsets me as they work for a pittance and most are young girls in their twenties who has to go through all the stress and abuse of the system, forget how they are looked upon in society when it comes to marriage. Nobody thinks about the invisible people like ward boys, cleaning staff who have to deal with human secretions, excreta, blood, sharps like needles, blades and all.

For me every single person doing his job with sincerity is a hero. For me a sanitation worker who goes down the manhole without any fancy protection is more a hero than any of us doctors who has better pay, protection and comforts. If the sanitation worker decides to stop his work, the results would be disastrous. Instead of making heroes out of people what we need is a culture which learns to respect a human being irrespective of his job.

NB: People often get angry with policemen, but to be honest they are one of the most stressed people. They have no concept of duty hours and the system makes them inhumane. I’m talking about the Policemen in my state of Kerala, don’t know about other states.

Difficult times for doctors, no doubt. Our govt has been reactive, but, has come out with a protection plan, hopefully it'll be implemented soon. Such incidents are happening in other countries too. England.

Re: Indian doctor gets 100-car salute for treating Covid-19 patients

Will doctors in India, ever get such appreciation from their patients, colleagues or the government? Each day for us hold endless potential for verbal and/or physical abuse, vandalism, condescension and harassment by the local neta or in the frighteningly nowadays common occurrence-homicide through mob action! And this is all in a regular day's work, not necessarily exclusive during these high COVID 19 weeks!

Thankfully, the government gave us a lollipop to shut us up crying at least during corona times, they implemented the Epidemic Disease Ordinance 2020 which basically says back off from the doctors, but only during the corona outbreak! Normal thrashing shall resume without liability or punishment after the virus has settled down.

On a more serious note, kudos Dr Madhusudan and all of the healthcare professionals on home soil and abroad for keeping this however controlled we can physically do so!

stay indoors and hope to be revving at max BHP soon again

A doctor working at Gandhi Hospital here in Hyderabad received a big round of applause from the residents of this apartment.
