If you have health conditions that can cause complications from COVID, do take all precautions necessary.

You know Bill Maher is a comedian and not a qualified medical professional, right?

I would suggest staying on the train with a mask on. In many places where masks are now optional, they still mandate/recommend masks in public transport (e.g., buses, trains, etc.). The same goes for international flights as well, as you are in a closed space with many other passengers for extended hours.

If you are comfortable wearing it the whole night, it is always better to. I have been on multiple overnight journeys to Kerala in the last few months. Most people take off the masks once inside the train and it is like normal precovid times.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread

I’ve done like 8 train journeys over the past 5 months. All in A/C coaches. I’ve managed to sleep with the mask on all night. Used the disposable surgical mask all times. The first time was a pain, but now, I’m totally used to it. Masked up is peace of mind for me.

It’s a different issue that you get weird looks from fellow train passengers. Very rarely would you see someone masked up.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread

So today I got RT-PCR report that I have been tested positive.
I think I got it from my office.
I had severe fever and headache. Now I only have cough and slight chest discomfort which is worrying. I check blood oxygen and it is at 99%, but heart beat is worryingly high at 105. I am using a steamer and hope that would relieve me from chest discomfort.

Are there any medicines I need to take?

Re: The Coronavirus Thread

Thanks for the guidance folks. Shall try and sleep with the mask on tonight

Just got back from the airport after picking up my sister and was surprised to see hardly anyone wearing masks. Sister says even on flight it was not really enforced.

Hopefully things settled down fast and we get rid of this mask affair for once and for all.

Please consult a known Physician or Pulmonologist and start on the medication for your symptoms. Mostly it's a symptomatic treatment which they recommend unless the symptoms worsen.

If you are vaccinated and have a healthy lifestyle there is nothing to worry and most symptoms subside within a week. Reg your high heart rate I think its just the result of your stress and worrying about it. The best non medical advice i can suggest is follow home isolation protocols, eat healthy, maintain required hydration, be stress free and follow Dr's advice. Wish you a speedy recovery.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread

After a two and a half year break I made a trip by public transport with my wife and son on 20th Aug to Hyderabad, to locate accommodation for my son and fix him up since he is joining in his first job there. We went by air. Were wearing normal/surgical masks during flight. While moving to our hotel accommodation stopped the cab in an Apollo pharmacy and bought a steam inhaler which we use daily at home after returning from outdoors. Went to the room and all three inhaled steam! My wife and I returned to Chennai yesterday by 2nd Ac sleeper. Took off the mask while sleeping, since it really can't filter out the virus. Pulled the curtains fully closed and slept cozily in our side berths. Did steam inhalation immediately after reaching home. That's all we can do, and hope for the best!

Gave the inhaler bought at Hyderabad to my son and told him to inhale steam after returning from work everyday. He has to travel to office and back by metro. Told him to always wear the mask in public places and use the sanitizer regularly. Hopefully he will follow the advise.

Most people don't wear masks in Chennai while outside, but almost nobody does in Hyderabad. People look at us strangely. I have observed one person or two here and there wearing masks in the Hyderabad metro.

Why not wear a mask that could?

I am not masking now, except in congested places (which I would avoid if I could) but I have never bothered with the surgical masks. If I mask, as I did compulsively for nearly three years, it is with n95.

I have my doubts that there is any point to steam inhalation as an antiviral measure --- but I don't know. Is there?

Wearing N 95 too long will be very uncomfortable. Especially while sleeping. Further, the protection is only 95%. It is the only mask that can actually filter out the virus - almost! Surgical masks will protect from droplets touching our nose/mouth when people are nearby. Droplets should be kept out of the eyes too, so wearing glasses will be good. Closing the curtains and fastening them was just to protect from droplets.

Hot (bearable) steam inhalation may be helpful when the virus still resides inside the nostrils. I have been doing it for over two years and it gives me peace of mind! Placebo? Probably.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread

A Case of Subacute Thyroiditis following COVID-19 Infection

I had some pretty bad experience post-Covid. Our family recovered from Covid (Omicron) in first week of Mar 2022. We had high fever and usual covid symptoms for five days. In mid-April, I had weird sensation in neck. I used to get slight pain in the neck which I tried to treat with usual vicks and application of warm cloth. It started getting severe in April end, where the pain was unbearable and it was followed by very high fever > 101. My spouse insisted me to visit ENT specialist. The doctor asked me to undergo Thyroid function test, antibody test and sonography of the same. The test came back with bad result showing very high T4 and nil TSH. The sonography rightly said something about suspicious Thyroiditis. ENT was clueless and gave me standard T4 lowering drugs, some steroid and paracetamol. I was hesitant to go with the prescription as the doctor was unable to explain the test results. I then decided to go to Endocrinologist. This time the other doctor diagnosed my condition as Subacute Thyroiditis due to Covid (viral) infection of Thyroid glands and immediately put me on standard treatment i.e. 1 corticosteroid and 1 Propranolol for hyperthyroidism. The treatment is long, in my case it was 2 months. I had to be careful to follow Covid appropriate behaviour since I was on steroid. There are 3 stages of recovery, I am in 2nd stage i.e. hypothyroidism and the pain is gone and I don't have to take any medicine. Hopefully I would recover fully in few months. The other doctor has asked me to come with TFT test after 2 months.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread

I got covid after 2.5 years of dodging it. I am also a freak when it comes to wearing mask and sanitizing. Sanitizer is like a mobile phone for me since March 2020. I recently went on a road trip and after couple of days had a really bad headache in the office. Initially, I thought it is a normal headache due to excess caffeine and took painkiller in the evening. I felt better. Next day morning I felt some discomfort in my throat and after few hours got fever. I tested at home it was negative and doctor also said seems like viral fever. Next day, I tested myself again and voila the test result was positive. Day 1 fever went upto 102.5, Day 2 about 101, Day 3 between 99 and 100, Day 4 it was normal. All throughout there was mild discomfort in throat, some cough and lot of weakness. Day 7, I tested myself again and result was negative. People have stopped bothering about covid and sometimes I find myself odd one out wearing a mask.
Hope no strong strain comes in future again.

Same scenario.
I got detected with covid last week. This is my second time.I am fully vaccinated including the booster dose.
Started of with bad headache, chills and throat irritation. Surprisingly my heart beat was constantly high. My watch would keep showing that I am in warm up mode. Stayed at 100-105bpm.

Couldn't understand what was happening. I have discomfort breathing while climbing from my room on first floor to ground floor as though I had a brisk walk.

Thinking of consulting a chest specialist.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread

Important Twitter thread to read on the Covid lab leak theory.

It's pretty technical, (and i have no pretensions that I understood even 5%), yet it is well presented and convincing.

Considering that Dr. Fauci led US NIH seems to have funded (via the Ecohealth Alliance) this dangerous SARS virus research in Wuhan, too many powerful people are involved and we may never hear the actual truth .

Re: The Coronavirus Thread

The WHO seems to be cautiously optimistic that the beginnig of the end to the Covid 19 pandemic is in sight in many countries. Also, I have read that experts in India are also (cautiosly) optimistic the pandemic seems to have entered the endemic stage in the country.
