WHO press briefing on announcing the corona as a pandemic.

I prefer that we post links and true stories here in this thread, rather than personal opinions and other off-topic matters that does not deserve merit.

re: The Coronavirus Thread

I wonder if it is possible to stop all people from moving across countries for a month or so, in order to stop the spread, irrespective of their visa status/duration or nationality. The case of 2 Pune patients was especially interesting as they came in from Dubai (went on a tourist visa) and now the 40 others they traveled with are to be screened a good 10 days later ( and they are scattered across Maharashtra). All of them must have gone places and the infected ones must have contaminated surfaces wherever they went. Its so difficult to keep a track now. I don't remember where I touched and how many times I sneezed/coughed in public just a day before yesterday, how does one expect to have a trail of 10 days ?

In theory, its like tackling bed-bugs. When there are bed-bugs in one bed room, you don't move stuff from that room to other rooms as even one bug can cause a big problem.

re: The Coronavirus Thread

Currently I am posted in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Local people in my office are so frightened by Corona virus here that they spray alcohol based sanitizer on laptops before they start work. Our account puts mask & applies sanitizer before and after counting the currency.

One of our Indian colleagues has gone to India for holidays and his return ticket is on 15th March. One local girl in our office says that either we should stop our Indian colleague from returning back or she will take 15 days leave.

Got this funny message on what's app today -

Dear HR
I am suffering from corona virus and request you to grant me paid leave for 20days. Otherwise I will come to office ........

re: The Coronavirus Thread

What worries me most is that people, governments, offices, establishments and companies are still not taking this seriously. I do not want anyone to panic. But please read this article on how the numbers increased in all these countries. The main way - social distancing. Lockdowns.

Aptly titled - why we must act NOW - https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coron...e-f4d3d9cd99ca

re: The Coronavirus Thread

I am sharing this news/snapshots just to put things in perspective and not to create panic. Also, hoping that some members here realise the gravity of the situation atleast now. These alarming statistics can definitely be attributed to rigorous testing, setting up of more labs across the respective countries, self reporting of symptomatic citizens and mapping the contacts on a large scale than anytime before, however this reflects the potential of COVID-19 to cause a massive collapse of healthcare system. The disease itself still has a lower mortality rate though, so there is no need to panic.

Qatar and Italy are witnessing a drastic increase in numbers in a span of just 24 hours. Remember that COVID-19 entered Italy in end January'20.

A key thing you will see there is that this is actually the first pandemic from a coronavirus we have ever seen. Never before we have seen coronavirus causing a pandemic. SARS/MERS were very small compared to this.

However in recent times we did see a "H1N1" pandemic which lasted a year and affected millions of people. With a 0.5% fatality rate it killed less than 300,000 people.
The other H1N1 which happens a 100 years ago, the Spanish flu killed a lot more.

Hopefull, the coronavirus pandemic will not infect as many people, but with a rise of 1.10 to 1.20 every day, we are now on track to 200K infected in as little as 5 days. If 1.10 infection rate sustains for even a month, we are looking at a million+ numbers.

The silver lining is that in China spread is mostly contained.

re: The Coronavirus Thread

Government has enforced tourist visa ban now and could also further enforce quarantine. on people entering India. People must avoid international travel in general. Hopefully countries will also take a cue, notable EU, USA.

Italy is a strange case. Though 2 Chinese tourists tested positive in Jan end, the actual epidemic started on Feb 21st, where 16 new cases were detected. The 1st death occurred on Feb 22nd. Within the next 3 weeks to date, there have been more than 12,000 cases and 800 deaths. The whole country is under total lockdown.

BTW, I got a message from ACT. They have removed FUP limit for March and increased speed to 300Mbps to enable work from home

Thank you for this. Is there a real time data available to track the rate of infection. Is it possible to compute the rate for India.

This god damned thing has started affecting our everyday life. I dont remember anytime in my 40 years of existence that the whole world is staring at a common villain. The messages from the leaders of the world are not helping either. The statement by German Chancellor, telling us that 75% of German population will be infected , is scary.

As a responsible intelligent group, I suggest we create a new SOS stickey thread with updated data, do's & don'ts, monitored by mods and doctors.

The argis page from John Hopkins updates Daily. You can track it worldwide or via country.

The standard protocol for most offices is: anyone who has traveled and returned from another town/ country should work from home for 15 days. You should suggest this.
The local girl's apprehensions are valid.
