re: The Coronavirus Thread

While many of us are trying to understand the gaps in devising proper response to Coronavirus on the national level, here's an article from Washington Post that narrates how the US erred repeatedly in ignoring the threat of Corona.
Quote:
...coronavirus has exposed the country’s misplaced confidence in its ability to handle a crisis, it also has cast harsh light on the limits of Trump’s approach to the presidency — his disdain for facts, science and experience.

Coronavirus sparks a 'war for masks' in desperate global scramble for protection

Several countries have accused the United States of trying to hijack their orders

have alleged that American customers -- without specifying who -- had tried to pay Chinese suppliers three or four times the agreed price to get critical supplies diverted.

The Brazilian government has also claimed that US demand is vacuuming up available supplies.

Several European governments have sounded the alarm about the difficulty of obtaining protective equipment for health workers.

"We must become more independent of the world market, for the security of our citizens. That is one of the lessons of these weeks,"
I was speaking with a cousin who is a doctor in the UK, apparently about 11 medical workers in his hospital have died due to coronavirus and they still do not have enough PPE for their staff.

Coronavirus patient tracking: Anand Mahindra, N Chandrasekaran in panel to guide government

The group will process a range of proposals from academicians, technology and healthcare professionals and the public on coronavirus patient tracking method.
Quote:
New Delhi: The government is roping in industry leaders such as Mahindra & Mahindra Chairman Anand Mahindra and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran to be part of a panel tasked with developing a technology platform to tackle the Covid-19 outbreak.

The panel will also help to improve the Arogya Setu app, keeping privacy issues in mind, within three months. This could be helpful in coronavirus patient tracking method.

“This is a one-of-a-kind exercise to enable social distancing among people even as we allow them to move about freely after the lockdown, and to allow prompt evaluation if they have been possibly exposed to the virus,” said a senior government official aware of the committee’s scope of work.

The group, which will process a deluge of proposals from academicians, technology and healthcare professionals and the public on tackling the Covid-19 outbreak, would also comprise Principal Scientific Advisor K VijayRaghavan, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Chairman RS Sharma, Electronics and Information Technology Secretary Ajay Sawhney and Telecom Secretary Anshu Prakash.

Though the government has launched the Aarogya Setu app, the committee will find ways to improve it and decide what information should be redacted and uploaded. The panel is studying how technology is being leveraged across the globe to track whether by going to a particular location, a person would be exposed to anyone who has Covid-19 or has displayed mild symptoms. This information would be crucial in places that see large congregations such as schools, offices and markets.

“The committee will take a call on various privacy issues that could be involved in tracking. For instance, in Europe, telcos are sharing anonymized data with health departments in Italy, Austria and Germany to uphold privacy of individuals while alerting others,” the official explained.

“Once a Covid-19 patient is identified, with the person’s consent, health officials could redact the location trail of the patient and broadcast it to others.” Another official said in some countries such as Taiwan, a mobile phone app was being used to ensure that the patient remained quarantined at home.

“Since India is such a large country, we will need to develop solutions that are workable here and also use the app and technology to inform people what are the places closest to them where they can find essential items such as masks.” The committee has been empowered to rope in more members if required.

Did his body fight the virus off itself? Was the medical care the ventilator and management of symptoms, or are there any medications that have been found to be useful and are being used for treatment in cases now?

And thank you Doctor for all your useful posts!

re: The Coronavirus Thread

Guys, since worldometer started publishing ‘Total Tests’ information, I did a simple math and found that India is doing pretty good in number of tests done.
I know, in ‘absolute terms’ or the ‘Test per 1M Pop’, India is nowhere close to rest of the countries, but I thought the figures that we need to look for is something different.
So, I did a calculation of ‘No of tests/ No of cases’ and found India is placed pretty well in the table.

Any comments on this table?

India has been doing pretty well in the testing side in the last 4-5 days after opening more testing facilities and ramping it up. We are currently averaging around 9-10K tests per day which is pretty good. Not sure where Worldometer gets India's test data, but the ICMR site is updated daily to reflect the total numbers. As of yesterday evening 9PM, total tests numbers stand at 89,534. Considering that it was around 30-35K till 5-6 days back, this is a significant jump.

According to information published on the ICMR website yesterday:

Quote:
A total of 89,534 samples have been tested as on 05 April 2020, 9 PM IST. 3554 individuals have been confirmed positive among suspected cases and contacts of known positive cases in India.
I don't know why there is a huge gap between the ICMR number and worldometer number for tests done.

re: The Coronavirus Thread

Just a random thought crossed my mind this morning. The newspapers are of course big sufferers because there is zero ( almost ! ) ad revenue.

I get 3 newspapers - TOI / ET & Local Hindi.

The Local Hindi - Amar Ujala always had if not half a page but nearly quarter of a page with Obituaries etc. A quarter meant on an everage 10 - 15 remembrances. I see zero to one daily for the last 15 days.

Now I am also informed from friends about the hospitals / clinics / doctors almost empty without work.

It is baffling to see what an industry everything was. I was picking some children medicine from a local known guy yesterday and asked him how was work and he replied business has been down 70 - 80%. He says he is shocked to see no one coming out for medicine. The only medicine he is selling is for ICU admitted patients and nonessential stuff like bandaids / Joint sprays / Vicks etc. And of course maternity patients.

I am not sure what to make out of this statistic.

When you have a bigger enemy behind you, smaller ones are not noticed. You will be surprised what survival instincts could do for us. Take my example, one of my burners just came off of the stove from where it is welded at. I found a way to reattach it in such a way that welding won't be necessary for a while. The pump of my cooler stopped working, I opened the entire machine to see if I could rectify it and I partially did. Point being, this lock down has made many of us realize that all this while we were busy with things that never mattered.

re: The Coronavirus Thread

I remember the dialogues from the Movie 'Fight Club'. All credits to the directors and script writers.

'Only after disaster can we be resurrected. It's only after you've lost everything that you're free to do anything. Nothing is static, everything is evolving, everything is falling apart'

'....advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need'.

'The things you own end up owning you. It's only after you lose everything that you're free to do anything'.

Oh!! How relevant they are in such times.

Glad to know you guys are still receiving newspapers. Here in Mumbai we haven't received newspapers since 23rd March! I hate reading e-paper online, there's nothing quite like reading physical copy of newspapers first thing in the morning.
My Dad has been phoning up relatives abroad after getting news on whatsapp & telling them how ayurveda cured Princes Charles of Covid-19, which offcourse isn't true!
