Re: The beat goes on | Comparing music streaming platforms

Spotify only since the last 3 years now, love their recommendations and algorithm. Also a great interface for Podcasts which I consume a lot.

Used to use Amazon music earlier but moved to Spotify when I got a 6 month Premium trial for free and have continued since with it.

Re: The beat goes on | Comparing music streaming platforms

I have subscriptions to Youtube (family plan) and Amazon Music

Don't use Amazon at all. Just Prime Video (even that is rare).

I had tried using Amazon Music for some time but sometimes the songs would lag in situations like being on hills or low network that Spotify or Youtube wouldn't. In fact, I have experienced audio lagging even with good network when on Amazon.

Youtube Music is my go to app in the car. It works well with voice commands on my Pixel and I recently realized that it now makes Spotify like Daily Mixes called "My Supermix" and "My Mix #(1-4)".

The issue with Spotify Premium is it just has its core offering, music streaming. But when it comes to Amazon Prime and Youtube Premium, they have allied benefits as well (free deliveries/Extra discounts/Prime Video and Ad free Youtube respectively). And once you have ad-free music on either of them, do we really need that 5% better playlist curation that Spotify offers?

Never tried Wynk / JioSaavn / Apple Music. But TuneIn radio seems nice, will give it a try once.

P.S.: I listen to music only in the car, only on long drives / when I am alone (and I WFH) so don't really need an additional music app subscription just for this situation.

Re: The beat goes on | Comparing music streaming platforms

Amazon music is majorly used for my personal and road travel music streaming. The quality of the music is decent and suits my requirements and taste. All in one Amazon Prime subscription has made my life simpler. They have excellent library ranging from timeless classical ones to the current generation type.
Second choice is the You Tube music with excellent sound quality coupled with exhaustive library collection.

On the practical side, it is more difficult to find 'Quality' time devoted purely for music in the daily grind of life.

Re: The beat goes on | Comparing music streaming platforms

Voted for Spotify for these reasons..

=> better audio quality. I faced sound quality issues if I used it along with some other apps like Google Maps. It may be a problem with my phone. Still a better quality than YT.

=> The interface and song library is vast.

=> It pairs with Android Auto very fast.

I never tried Apple Music on Android but will surely give it a try.

Re: The beat goes on | Comparing music streaming platforms

Spotify for laptop as its web user interface is quite good, but Amazon music everywhere else. Primary reason is to avoid having multiple apps in the phone. One amazon account syncs well with prime video and shopping app. Spotify scores big time over Amazom music in case of playlists, but my wife likes to the in-charge of music and playlist don't matter then. This way I am not missing out on the playlist.

Also, home has couple of Alexa devices so continuity of amazon music helps (I know I can have it with other streaming apps as well, but this way I didn't have to work on setting it up) ;-)

I am pretty happy with the sound quality of the Amazon music.

Re: The beat goes on | Comparing music streaming platforms

My teenage daughter gifted me the monthly family plan (of course on my own credit card) but we've been enjoying it a lot on our highway trips.
No ad breaks is a blessing.
And they almost have everything that I listen to.

Amazon Music, because it comes bundled with the Prime membership. Plus, Youtube is my go-to most of the times. Usually listen to music only while driving. iPhone connected via Apple Carplay. No complaints really, satisfied with the quality.

Apple Music user here since its launch in 2015. Best Audio quality amongst the competition, and also not to forget the Karaoke function. The only thing they can improve is their playlist algorithms.

Re: The beat goes on | Comparing music streaming platforms

Most of my music listening has been restricted to cars. I am going to be the odd one here who is still relying on my 3rd gen Ipod Nano. This guy will turn 16 years old this November and is still connected to my Ecosport still playing.

Even though I moved to Gaana, back in 2019 I struggled to get the desired audio quality. Gaana didn't have most of my favourites, especially in English & Malayalam. And I realized that Gaana has been mysteriously downloading temp files to my phone - and had a lot of UX challenges.

Fast Forward 2022 - I moved to Apple Music, which played songs in above-par quality and had the best English songs collection to my taste. You name it and you will find it kind of thing. All this while, I had to stick on to my Nano - despite some connectivity challenges on the USB. Apple Music didn't allow me to download songs and had some UX challenges for me. Added to this it still didn't have 3-4 of my favorite songs in the list and a very mediocre Malayalam songs collection. My wife uses an Android phone and hence a combo plan wouldn't work, unlike Gaana.

While my brother has been recommending Spotify, I thought that to be expensive to the value. I picked up a one-month trial and looks like it solved all my problems in one go.

- Decent collection of Malayalam Songs + all my favourites intact.
- Wonderful UI & UX and easy to use.
- It's probably the only platform with a usable Equalizer.
- Just because of Spotify I even added a small HK Onyx for home audio.
- I can now subscribe to a Duo plan and have added my wife to it.
- Downloadable playlist is more practical here.

All hail Spotify.

PS: I have my Nano still plugged into my Ecosport doing duty whenever required.

Re: The beat goes on | Comparing music streaming platforms

I occasionally listen to streamed music in my car only. And I use Gaana because it is the only app available in my car infotainment system.

Re: The beat goes on | Comparing music streaming platforms

I used to use Amazon music for some time, as it was free with prime. But once I took YouTube Premium Family subscription, moved to YT Music completely - Home music system, mobile(android) and car (android auto).
Bang for the bucks -
- it's cheap,
- ad free YouTube,
- 5 family members
- Higher quality music than Amazon Music or other Indian steaming services, at par with Spotify premium in my ears; (never used Apple Music cannot comment),
- very good auto play suggestions
- huge collection of Bengali songs apart from regular Bollywood/Hindi and English.

Difficult to beat above points for any other music streaming service available.

I have lots of iTune bought music collection, I play them locally on phone using Poweramp Pro or copied to pendrive connected to my AVR.

Re: The beat goes on | Comparing music streaming platforms

Voted for Other

I use this app called ViMusic. It's an Open Source and Ad free Music Streaming App which streams Music from YouTube Music. Cache audio chunks for Offline Playback and works perfectly fine with Android Auto.

Call me a brokie but I still don't understand the point of paying for a Music Streaming Platform when you are using an Android

Re: The beat goes on | Comparing music streaming platforms

I have a YouTube Premium subscription, it can play music without ads all day. If I'm not on YouTube music, I would like to play my FLAC songs via VLC player from my mobile.

Re: The beat goes on | Comparing music streaming platforms

Spotify premium all the way! I've been using it for a long time and I'm very happy with it. YT music is also very good and although I haven't subscribed to it, I do use it occasionally to find similar songs and then I play them back on Spotify (YT music does a really good job of finding related songs.)

Re: The beat goes on | Comparing music streaming platforms

I don’t use any streaming service for audio, for one you can’t get high def lossless formats and running a compressed audio file in a high end system is like putting poor quality petrol in a Maserati.

Plus, if you ever do long distance driving in areas without good internet coverage, your entire library is inaccessible. Also, with streamed audio you cannot edit the start and stop points to suit your taste.

So what I do is permanently connect old 512gb iPhones in both my cars (via USB) many people may not be aware but Apple actually puts half decent DSP’s in the iPhone lineup. You need as much storage as possible when dealing with 200-300mb per song.
