Even otherwise, the French Larzac engine used in the initial prototypes of IJT-36 developed inadequate thrust. The French were demanding a lot of money for developing a higher thrust version for HAL and so HAL discarded the French engine in favour of the Russian engine from Saturn with whom an agreement has been signed for manufacturing up to a thousand engines in India.
