This a rather philosophical Bulgarian movie. Those who get it will like it, those who don't will find it as just another movie with a middle aged hero trying to help a mentally special but with some paranormal powers heroine.

Exhuma : 4/10

One of the most promising - and disappointing - horror movies I’ve seen in recent times - and trust me I watch a LOT. My wife and I are complete horror movie buffs.

This is literally 2 horror movies in 1. Very interesting premise, very well executed - for the first half. The first 1 hour is pretty spooky and good. But once the first part of the story plot leads to another new story it just goes into complete mumbo-jumbo and gets tedious and ridiculously black magic based. We were just waiting for it to end.

The only good thing was seeing the original ‘Oldboy’ hero Choi Min-Sik as an actual old guy now And seeing a hat-tip to ‘Kwaidon’ when the characters write out chants in their faces.

Terrified: (2017, Spanish)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7549892/

"When strange events occur in a neighborhood in Buenos Aires, a doctor specializing in the paranormal, her colleague, and an ex police officer decide to investigate further."

Some absolutely creeped out jump scare moments and moments that you wish would get over Nice horror movie albeit with a few boring parts in between. Movie should have been 10-15mins shorter.

Some weird explanations and loose ends but overall in a scene devoid of good horror movies to watch, this was a nice surprise.

3.75/5

Watched 'Wild Tales' on Prime. Its an Argentine movie comprising 6 stories and enjoyed it thoroughly. Its mad, twisty, comical and rushes on you. Acting is great.

I had a hunch if you were referring to the same anthology movie which had the one on the car chasing the car and the events that unfold. I wasn’t wrong! Man, I loved this one so much.

Another recommendation for this one.

Second that. Absolutely creepy until the end - the denouement was a let down.

Sadly his second movie ‘When evil lurks’ (https://m.imdb.com/title/tt16300962/)
that came out this year was unwatchable to me. People are saying it’s the years best and I had high hopes for it since my wife and I loved Terrified, but we can’t watch gross body horror which it was, among other things.

Yeah, I hastened to imdb to check the premise of that movie and after reading it decided Hell No!

"demon-infected man just about to "give birth" to evil itself". Stopped right there

But being starved of horror movies to watch, might just give it a try sometime.

Have you seen "Hellhole"?

By chapter 5 I was already waiting for it to end and then chapter 6 started. This movie is a debacle with borderline funny dialogues and as the time passes they keep ridiculous (may be because they were translated in English? Don't know) I think that was the last straw for me.

Subscribed to Philo just to watch this movie. I came out disappointed except for the first 15 minutes or so. I gotta say I was terrified.
I think another Spanish movie which really, really terrified me was [REC].

[REC] was an amazing movie in this genre! Had no expectations when I started to watch it and man, it just blew me away

[REC] 2 is reasonably okay too but the OG is something else. I don't remember any sequel horror movie that's as good as part 1.

No, not yet. I’m a bit wary of foreign horror movies as is, sometimes they go where no one should

Like the one everyone was calling the best of the year last year - Speak no evil - it was SO bad IMO! Forget the horror it was so contrived, we are not parents but at a certain point in the movie very early on there is a scene with one of the kids of the protagonist and my wife and I both said no parent would stay back after this. But the leads still do for some reason. And now they’re remaking it in English with James Mcavoy!

Yes the translations also might be a reason but the plot just meandered towards the end. Reminded me a bit of ‘The Wailing’ which was another very popular Korean horror..initially started off really well but then even they got in too much superstition and killed the atmosphere. And these movies are REALLY long!

Yes, huge dearth of good horror.

What sort do you like?

Like I can’t stand body/mutilation/torture horror. Like the new ‘Evil dead’ series is not my scene. Even got bored of the Saw series.

Wife and I do love a good slasher and also psychological horror. Like for me one of the most perfect horror movies is ‘The Others’ with Nicole Kidman.

Let me know your preferences might be able to suggest some.

And I second what someone had suggested on the forum - can we have a dedicated horror thread please? Really hard to talk horror when REC and Exhuma can’t be in the same thread as ‘Late Night With The Devil’.

I volunteer to start and feed it, dear Mods!

Likewise. Can't stand that type of horror. In general I can't stand vivid gore of serious nature (I am okay with The Boys or Walking Dead zombie style gore though), Unfortunately I ran into a couple of such movies recently, The Apostle and The Amulet which was one of the strangest movies I ever saw- very unfortunate turn of events for me as I couldn't watch some scenes just like the Saw franchise. Never went beyond first movie and will never in future either.

I think I am good with movies like The Others, Paranormal Activity, Conjuring, The Ring or even Insidious to some extent. Also its not exactly horror but a movie called The Triangle creeped me out too. So yeah, you get the drift.
Would love to get some recommendations on similar movies in this thread or a horror specific one if you do decide to start it!

Oh, if you liked The Triangle, you will be blown away by 'Head count'.
This one:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7350614/

It is the simplest, most harrowing high concept movie I've seen in a while. And it's an indie, most people haven't even heard of it. In case you can't find it, DM me will share the file Don't read anything about it, just watch it.

Have you seen 'Creep'? It was from the indie gods the Duplass Brothers when they were just getting big. The first was better than the second but both Creep and Creep 2 are worth a watch.

And by far the most mind-bending film I've seen is a little gem called 'Coherence'. It's not really 'horror' but it will knock your socks off and creep you out just by the concept for sure. In fact I'm going to make a post about all the mind-bending movies I've seen. Again, in case you can't find, DM!

Don't think I have seen these movies, Coherence rings a bell but others definitely not. Head Count premise sounds super. I think I have my weekend sorted. Thanks!

Headcount: Added it onto list of movies to watch

Creep: Shall give it a pass

Coherence: Sounds very promising. One for a train journey someday

Thanks.
