Team-BHP - The Scale Model Thread

A beautiful little United Nations Jeep Willys MB by Greenlight. 1:43.
From ModelArt today.
Perfect for my collection.

They also have a lovely set of Kyosho and Paragon Manufactured cars - 1:43 Bentleys, Rolls Royces etc which are pretty expensive.
And the large 1:18 Jag E Type, Daimler Mark 2's and Jag XJ6 (Daimler Body) which are also pretty expensive.
The piece de resistance was a Ferrari 250 which was really expensive. 1:18.

Though I don't collect 1:18 I was sorely tempted.

Agreed that the Kyosho Ferrari 250 GTO is expensive but no other model maker makes a perfect replica, not even CMC whose models are way more expensive.

Regarding the Jaguar e Coupes, these Paragon models are excellent value for money models with fantastic detailing.

One might as well stick to Hotwheels or better still Kinsmarts if they are cost conscious.

Instead of encouraging this hobby, such posts only degrade it. Look at models from their history, legacy point of view. That should be the biggest motivator for adding a particular model and not cost.

Why do you say such posts only degrade it?
I take exception to that statement.

Because I really do not have the same funds as you may have, to indulge my passion for these things, which is why I merely remarked that those 1:18's were "expensive" - close to 18000 Rupees for each piece.

Yet, I do find myself able to put down my occasional 100-150 and some Dollars towards a particularly spectacular 1:43 model which I love and perhaps covet. Like the Lambo Countach and Lambo Miura Limited Numbered Editions I recently got at AutoArt in 1:43... Gorgeous things!

I dont collect 1:18 - I ve always loved 1:43.

Saying that, I love that Ferrari 250 Lusso (is that an SWB?) and that Lancia Fulvia Fanalone which I see lurking about. Also that Lancia Stratos and Ford Consul.
These cars make me happy just to look at them. I am happy for you that you are able to own and enjoy them. I can't right now.

10 years ago, at Auto Art (ModelArt) Bangalore, there was a pale Blue Lancia Fulvia Fanalone available at a ridiculously cheap price of Rs 2500/- (Auto Art 1:18) and there was also a Green Military Jeep at Rs 1975 (Auto Art 1:18).
I just did not have the spare moneys at that time and hence passed them up.
I regret that immensely.

On a recent visit to Australia I went to my favourite shop called ModelMania in Melbourne - he has some truly beautiful 1:43's and 1:18's of the period that you seem to also like - however, all of these are priced anywhere from 200 Dollars upwards to 500-600 Dollars.

These sums, even now, represent quite a lot of money; to me anyway.

Actually we need to have separate threads for various scales, so that they can be appreciated in their own category. Smaller scales get lost among the beautiful 1:18s. Thread categorisation as follows will be helpful for those collecting/ following specific scales:
1) 1:18 - 1:24
2) 1:43 - (AutoArt, Minichamps, CMC, etc)
3) 1:24 - 1:54 (Maisto, Welly, Bburago - economy series)
4) 1:55, 1:64, 1:87 - Professional (GreenLight, M2, AutoWorld, etc)
5) Toy categories - Hotwheels, matchbox - economy series; and rest others - Centy, etc

While I love the 1:18's and appreciate the craftsmanship etc, I also am mindful of the space required to truly showcase them well.

I have on the other hand, always loved the little miniature 1:43's because right from when I was a kid, I ve had tons of these and used to play with them. That simple, happy memory was one of the main things that made me take up 1:43 as my preferred scale for collecting. Yes, it is true that the side benefit of "space" also is there, and I am mindful of the same.

Review of a GreenLight model I did some time back. These are nice models and the detailing is exquisite, especially considering the small scale. Please excuse the average photography.

5.0 printed on both the front fenders, representing the engine capacity in Litres (the V8 was earlier popularly called the 302 – it’s capacity in cubic inches
'MUSTANG’ printed on a blacked-out part of the plastic quarter-glass window just behind the B-pillar
Ford blue oval printed on the right side of boot-lid

- The lower half of the car is made from plastic or painted to look like plastic cladding (like in the real car) – looks very realistic!
- Clear plastic headlights with orange hue parking lights (not indicators as I initially mistook) & red colour plastic tail-lights with a painted white strip for the reverse lights
- Special mention needs to be made for the round fog-lights on the lower part of the front bumper these fog lights are also made of clear plastic and not painted, like in most smaller scale models
- Other details include wipers, inside & outside rear-view mirrors & fuel lid marking
- Realistic bulge on the bonnet / hood
- Proper, nicely detailed fastback spoiler with red-painted stop lights
- Number plate at the rear with the letters ‘BB’ (Black Bandit) printed
- Rubber tyres with treads on multi-spoke turbine style matt black rims
- Opening bonnet revealing a neat little engine bay with mechanicals including clearly visible engine, radiator fan cowl, battery and the front strut cover as well
- Although the exhaust is clearly marked on the under-carriage, it is not visible from the rear
- Matt black painted metal chassis with unique serial number stamped with raised details such as drive-train, suspensions and exhausts components
