Great thread! What better than sharing the spirit with fellow enthusiasts. I have since the past few years collecting and maintaining (before that were just playing) some model cars. I still play with them sometimes though. Mostly taking pictures and placing(parking!) them at different locations in the house. As like any other serious hobby, I realise that this could get as expensive as buying fresh air in Beijing now. So, I mostly stick to toy grade models that are not full on details but still retain the form factor pretty decently. In India, I mostly found those at Landmark, Odyssey and certain toy store chains. This way I still the get the feeling of holding and owning the car with not burning the bank accounts. Here are some from my collections (most of it 1:43).

I am not a scale model collector since I have only one model, acquired many years ago, around 1994-1995. Our ship (the venerable “Chada Naree”) had called at Aomori in north Japan. I, along with other shipmates, had called at a haberdashery selling second-hand items of incredible variety and range – from used scooterettes (of upto 50cc), used fridges, wood-cuts and also used scale model cars! This particular one caught my eye since I had been reading up on Alfa Romeo history, particularly the pre-WW II period. It was in very good condition & after the necessary exchanges, I was the proud new owner.

The model is a 1:18 scale die-cast made by Bburago. The car is the Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza of 1934, with the open Touring/Zagato body used extensively for racing in the early 1930’s with spectacular success, winning Le Mans outright in 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934 and almost winning in 1935. The scale model carries the Green Cloverleaf motif (Quadrifoglio Verde) of the Alfa Romeo racing stable managed at the time by Enzo Ferrari, much before he went on to establish his own marque.

The original car was a Vittorio Jano design, with a straight-8 engine of 2.3 L, with twin overhead camshafts & a Rootes type supercharger, producing a reported 178 bhp.

BHPians, a quick one here. Have been collecting 1:64 since a long time. Might get into the whole scale model collection thing in future. In Mumbai right now, can anyone suggest good stores to check out scale models/RC models, which stock nice ones at reasonable prices? Not willing to spend much right now.

Absolutely, shankar.balan! The open-top roadsters of the period give me exactly the same time-out-of-time feeling - that I am born in the wrong era!
Today's Alfa's (specially after the recent resurrection by Ferrari) are no doubt great cars - they just lack the enigma of the pre-war examples.

Good to know that at least one other member on this forum shares the same sense of magic!

Splendid examples, shankar! If only Wolf Barnato had not run out of his prodigious resources as W.O.'s financier, the Bentley story may have had a different ending! This one is a mouth-watering example, as are all the pre-1931 models!

The Jaguar SS & Aston are great examples of the era. The 166 MM bears an uncanny resemblance to the Cisistalias of the period. Since Cisitalia arrived earlier on the scene (1946 or so), it is interesting to speculate if Enzo Ferrari did a bit of plagiarising for the 166 MM. It is a matter of record though, that these cars (among others of the period) were the fore-runners of the fast-back form of the post-WWII future, as well as the space-frame structure (Superleggera patented design from Carrozeria Touring) that remains a landmark even now.

There is a book called the Bentley Boys - all about Woolf Barnato and the other Bentley enthusiasts of the Roaring 20's and 30's...I got it some years ago from Australia or the UK or maybe the US or somewhere. Cant remember where. But it is a fabulous book!
