Paid someone else's credit card bill by mistake. EDIT - Now Resolved.

BHP-ians!

I made a folly, I unwittingly typed in the wrong credit card number while using a 3rd party service to repay my outstanding credit card bills; is there any way to recover that money? Any tips, directions is highly appreciated.

I have an SBI credit card; I have been using their ‘PayNet’ service to clear up credit. Unfortunately, during my last payment; I typed in the last 4 digits incorrectly.

I had the CC number & the pwd stored on my phone, by mistake I typed in the pwd as the last 4 digits instead of the CC number. And to my bad luck; there must have been such a card; my payment was accepted. I just realized my mistake when I got a reminder email about a pending CC payment.

I am outside India right now; so I am not able to dial into their helpline from my non-Indian phone number. I have dropped them an email with the details. Sad part is; the first page after clicking “Pay now” from the SBI card page is a disclaimer dissociating them from the 3rd party payment service.
Hoping to hear from them. In case, any of you have been through such a situation, plz do guide me as to how to go about recovering the amount.

Cant believe; I typed in the wrong details twice!!
Paynet makes us input the CC number twice; I must have just looked at the row above and repeated the numbers. Sheesh!!

Edit: Just figured out Paynet is powered by BillDesk. Reaching out to them as well.

Somehow I doubt that typing in the first 12 digits of your credit card and affixing the PIN will give you a valid credit card number as per the Luhn algorithm where the last digit is a check digit.

SBI takes time to reply via email, but they usually respond in 2 days. Their phone support is pathetic. Next time, please consider paying SBI via NEFT as that is far easier than using Paynet and of course you need to set it up only once.

It's a mistake the bank should help you rectify. Please ask someone in your family to talk to the SBI team for it.

The payment should get returned but it will take time !! In the mean time pay the minimum amount for your credit card bill or you will have late payment charges and it will hit your CIBIL score. The bank or CIBIL wont see that you paid a wrong card number.

Then I have some real bad luck in my favour....

I got an automated response with the issue ticket #.

Will wait for a day and try that. I am not sure how helpful the SBI guys would be when you enter a lot of personal details through their IVR and then say, "I am calling on behalf of xxxx". Worth a try; shall keep you posted.

If the entered card number happens to be valid; would the payment still get returned? I doubt.

I did pay up; in fact the full amount. Last thing I want is additional interest being charged on pending amount. Trying to cut my losses in case this erroneous payment is going down the drain.

Re: Paid someone else's credit card bill by mistake

This is going to take some time.
Pay the Minimum balance and wait for their revert.

You will need a combined effort from both Billdesk and SBI to credit the amount back into the account.

BTW,was it a high amount?
Next time, take extra care and avoid paying using the phone.

Suggestion: For future payments, just add the credit card account as a payee in your online banking login. Once the number is entered correctly, from the next month onward, you only have to select the name and enter the amount.

No point manually entering the credit card number every month. Just leaves the door wide open for errors.

Re: Paid someone else's credit card bill by mistake

Well, I am not sure about Credit Cards, but if you do an NEFT (Money Transfer) to another account in error the only chance of getting it back if the account holder (to whom you accidentally transferred the amount to) agrees for a reversal. If the credit card works similar way, i guess its bad luck and hope the amount is not huge.

There was an article in one of the "Financial" Blogs related to this - http://www.jagoinvestor.com/2015/01/...k-account.html

Hope the amount wasnt much. Unless the system finds that the card num was invalid, and hence returns your money ,, I dont have much expectations from SBI Credit cards

Legally you should be able to get the money back. Someone who received it in error cannot claim it to be his/her, and the bank should help you get it back. The process for doing that may or may not be simple, but why don't you approach the bank and find out instead of we all speculating about it? You can't be the first person to make this mistake.

Re: Paid someone else's credit card bill by mistake

Somehow I feel like your payment will be reverted back. How can the payment reach a person when the combination of CC number, Name and Card validity date has a mismatch.
In the mean time, as others said pay your real CC bill to avoid late fee and a bad credit history.

Re: Paid someone else's credit card bill by mistake

Thanks guys!

SBI customer service has responded positively; they are verifying the details, and will get back to me in a couple of days. Hope they don't point out the fine print and wash their hands off.

As advised, I did pay up the amount.
Registered the NEFT part. Future payments should be issue less. (Triple checked the card number).

Eagerly waiting for SBI cards response.

Re: Paid someone else's credit card bill by mistake

Do not worry . I had committed such blunder last year in the very same month of Jan. I wrongly entered my CITI card number and paid the amount through SBH and when I received a call about the pending bill, I realized my mistake.

When I complained to the bank authorities, they checked and were kind enough to let me know that all such amount first lands up in a pooling account and after 'verification' gets transferred to the ' valid' account. Since I entered an invalid number, it was easy and all I had to do was to write a letter and in a matter of 4-5 days, the amount was credited.

Re: Paid someone else's credit card bill by mistake

Update!!

I have got my money back. Required quite a bit of follow up and multiple levels of verifications. Maybe because I was doing most of it over email.
I got my money as of last month; the same is reflecting in this month's statement.

Case closed.
