I just got an svchost.exe file the other day while i attempted to download a video from Ares browsing software. If i try and end task while pressing ctrl+alt+del it ends up shutting down the system. I have Norton AV 2002, but it doesn't acknowledge the presence of this new worm/virus. Any way of getting rid of this problem as my computer has slowed down quite a bit since then...

Hey Revv,

svchost.exe is not a virus or spyware......its part of the winXP OS.

However Ares is loaded with spyware & adware!...so i would suggest going to download.com and getting "ad-aware" to help u take care of that.

Heres another tip - whenever dloading software, go to download.com and search for it...and then on the description page if there is a box that says "Editors note-" and mentions that the software has spyware etc avoid the program!

cheers

yeah exactly
svchost.exe is just about everything... in windows never messup with it.
and it must be there from day one!

but svchost does strange stuff... it tries to connect to download.microsoft.com... only in my comp!
and if you deny network access to this file.. internet wont work at all. so its a bit tricky.

see svchosts

Heres some interesting info> http://windowsxp.mvps.org/svchost.htm

Basically it says, multiple svchosts.exe files running IS normal. However, some viruses use the name svchost.exe, so make sure u have a good antivirus software running.

i had a similar problem. Make sure ur live update is working. If its not and giving u an error message then click on the support link and it will take you to the symantec website. Follow the instructions. When your live update starts working norton will detect the virus/worm whatever.

hope it helps.
