here is a good news for all online shoppers.
AMAZON has launched today it's online e-commerce portal in India.
it's amazon.in
currently they are selling only books, movies and TV shows.
soon they are going to start electronics and other items.
it's gonna be a healthy competition between these e-commerce portals, which is certainly good for consumers.
Good to see Amazon finally coming to India - it would be nice if they offer Amazon shopping card like in US (which I think would not happen).
Yeah, it is truly great to see Amazon finally set up shop though it is only as an aggregator for now. I've been shopping from Amazon.com US since 2004 and have been nothing but very satisfied. Their customer service and delivery is a benchmark any e-commerce site should strive to attain.
The closest in India at this time is Flipkart but with their current woes I wonder how long they will last. I think some consolidation is due in the Indian e-commerce industry. Flipkart would have been taken over by Amazon had it not been for that silly restriction on FDI in e-commerce.

SourceThere's only books and movies to choose from as of now. But they would expand to cameras, mobiles phones and other electronics.
Amazon
My comment:
Happy to see the big guy coming in. There could be some consolidation and takeovers in the pipeline pretty soon. I really hope some of the inefficient and unfriendly online stores vanish with Amazon's presence.
What was Junglee all about then?
It's been a long wait to see Amazon come to India. But here it is now!:Cheering:
It is still a marketplace website than the full fledged Amazon operated web store. Atleast that is what I understood. Please correct if I am wrong.
Junglee was / is a comparison site which usually links to another seller's website for each product.
Yes, Amazon doesn't sell anything of its own because they're not allowed to according to our country laws on foreign direct investment. But they will be working with vendors and dealers across the country and setting up a fulfilment process which I think would be Amazon's major source of revenue. Also, they let users like you and me sell items on their website and they charge more than eBay for a sold item although there are no listing fees.
I really thought Junglee would be expanded to include Amazon's range of services, since they were in "Beta", but I guess they'll just get rid of it sooner or later.
Hehehe, I have this feeling that Amazon will buy off Flipkart. Just a hunch :)
Awesome, now Amazon, please launch Kindle and digitized books asap.
I am hoping the range also expands, currently its just books, and DVD's, soon there would be mobiles, camera and and other electronic products.
It says "Free Delivery When fulfilled by Amazon"

I thought Kindle is already available? Do you mean sale of hardware on Amazon?
Books are also available.

Junglee was basically a market test. It allowed them to see the popular categories/products etc and monitor demand over a long period of time.
Tapish
As one who is a huge fan of Amazon, and a customer since 2001, I'm thrilled at the news! Thanks for sharing.

I doubt. Flipkart's valuation is way too high. It would cost Amazon far lesser $$$ to build their own customer base in India. Remember, Amazon has already set up local logistics too. The company loves a fight and is unbeatable when it comes to managing costs (a sore point for Flipkart) & customer service.
Finally!
I had insider info about this launch but it still it is a big thing. Have a bit of a soft corner being a customer for a long time (having had to ship most DVDs to friends and then get them back here ..sometimes without their covers and what not)
Unfortunately they have let Flipkart way ahead of them but like GTO says they will try hard to catch up. Now here's hoping for more products/categories to be sold and stocked at decent prices.
