RIP Yahoo public chat rooms

It is sad Yahoo has decided to pull the plug on public chat rooms feature of Yahoo Messenger on Dec 14 2012.

I got introduced to the concept of 'chatting' through this feature more than a decade ago and it has helped me form many enduring frendships. Some dear and others very near.

An era will end with its demise.

RIP old friend.

Re: RIP Yahoo public chat rooms

Must log on for the last time before they pull the plug. I met a person via Yahoo Chat who told me about advertising during college days. He told me where all I can guide my career in advertising and I chose copywriting. In fact, I went all the way to Mumbai from Ahmedabad to meet this person the day I graduated.

Thank you Yahoo Chat.

A/S/L? :P

Re: RIP Yahoo public chat rooms

This is so sad.

Guys chip in with funny Boy and Girl stories on Yahoo Messenger. No need to take names.

Here is one from my end.
This happened somewhere in 2002.
There was this guy my friend knew who was at Onsite.
He met one girl online. He had not seen her on cam. But he sent a gift through a returning friend of his to give it to her. Now here in India there was quite a fight among the boys as to who will go an give the necklace. Although blows were not exchanged but quite a bit of politics was played out.

Finally the "victor" went to give the necklace. Unfortunately the girl did not quite turn out to be as anticipated.

Even today whenever the "victor" leg has to be pulled the whole incident is repeated frame by frame in front of him.

A/S/L?

At some point of time I was regular at Chat rooms.
Made few friends. Off late there were more bots then humans so left visiting chat rooms some 5 years back.

It was a great concept and good time pass!!

Re: RIP Yahoo public chat rooms

Sad and also brings back memories of initial days of internet;
in 2001, I entered one of the chats and was asked A/S/L? and I replied "please clarify", next line?
"Bye"

Re: RIP Yahoo public chat rooms

Sad. Before FBs & Twitters of the world, that's how we connected with friends. It was little weird in the beginning being asked ASL & that would decide whether someone would chat with you or not

It was funny to see every guy trying to say "hi" to a girl ( may be guy who singed with pseudo name) in the chat room & keep fingers crossed for reply. Men will be Men !

"ASL plz"

The top option for making a bakra on the net during college days. The modus operandi used to be quite simple
- Login into a with a fake female name/profile
- Wait for a few guys to start pinging you (happens within seconds!)
- "Flirt" with him then/later on a one-on-one chat
- Let imagination do the needful for the next steps ahead

Ah! Life used to be a lot simple then!

Been there, done that!! I mean the 'Login into a with a fake female name/profile' part

Best part - Sitting just 3-4 PCs away from the bakra in the computer lab and doing it.

Man, some serious leg pulling was always assured.

Hahaha, it was fun - I think ASL will now be pushed to some obscure corner of the internet. Good times. Before the advent of even voice calls etc, this is how me and friends used to keep in touch...

Subtle explanation of what can happen over internet these days.
I can remember such a situation where my friend found a girl to chat on Yahoo chat and it turned out to be our class mate who he hated the most

Not to mention leg-pulling was given its honors for the next 15 days or so

The one thing i miss the most from Yahoo chat is the usage of the "BUZZ " .
Just a button away to piss the other person.

RIP old friend.
During the peak of Yahoo Chat rooms, I had a virtual girl friend on Yahoo chat. We would chat for hours, as I was in US at that time. After I came back to India, we graduated to talking on phone. We even met 3-4 times. This went on for 4 years. The relationship was platonic.

I had a friend, who similarly had a girl friend on Yahoo chat. He chatted for 1 year, talked for phone for another year. They are now married for last 8 years, and have 2 kids.

that was some serious leg pulling and it used to be real fun in college.

And the best part, the guy who created the fake female id used to fall for another fake female id who happens to be his friend trying to take revenge
