re: Home Construction / Makeover / Maintenance Thread

Need an info about home elevators:

What is the minimum LxW to be provided for a 2-3 passenger mechanical elevator?

One builder with whom we are discussing our plan said that we would have to provide 5' x 4.25' whereas another one suggested that we should be providing 6' x 6' - which we felt is too big.

Thanks!

Interesting idea on opening up only one side and sliding the glass. I just hope the old glass is additionally not secured by tape when it was made

The dimensions depend on the size of the elevator and door opening type. If you want to install a sliding door type elevator then you may need 6x6 feet as space will be needed on the sides for the doors to open. If you go for an old swivel door, it will need less but you have to manually open the door. My suggestion would be to finalize an elevator model first and then plan the space.

re: Home Construction / Makeover / Maintenance Thread

We are planning to get the interiors done for my new apartment. To start with, we visited couple of experience centers from reputed designers. Meeting few more over the weekends.

But it is hard to finalize with too many options.

Has anyone done their interiors recently? This is in B'lore.
Any recommendations will help !

re: Home Construction / Makeover / Maintenance Thread

Hope someone down South can help me out. WE are building a new house and my wife is fixed on getting Athangudi tiles for the courtyard and verandahs. I understand that the traditional red (maroon( colour is the best and other colours fade with time and exposure to the elements. Is this true?
Secondly any pointers to a reliable supplier would be welcome and approximate costing.

re: Home Construction / Makeover / Maintenance Thread

Just FYI, I got the door mirror replaced over 2 days. I turned out that the mirror glass was stuck to the door also using Bostik No More Nails (what type of adhesive is it ? PVC ?).

So the old glass had to be smashed and chipped off which was a bit of a mess. Then I did one last minute boo boo. Ordered a new glass which was 2 inches wider than the old one. Gave correct dimensions when talking to my glass guy but mistyped when sending the address. The glass is well supported and siliconed in place but there's a 2 inch gap between the inner side piece on the top and bottom. Not terrible looking luckily so when i do a touch up polish of the frame I might just cover the gap with masking tape and polish over it to reduce its appearance

Anyone has done rainwater harvesting for their house or societies? Instead of percolating all the water in the ground, has anyone tried to store all the water in the ground storage tanks?

In Pune according to size of terrace, the said plot receive 60000 liters of rain water every year. What is the cost of underground storage tank either in FRP or Precast or concrete for the size of tank which stores this much water?

I got a reverse bore done for the new house we are constructing. Depth 350 feet and tube dia: 8". And two filter tanks. Project was Terribly expensive, though.

We are installing one in the new house being built, with wheelchair access. Enclose the plan. Hope it helps.

I don't remember the cost but I got it done when constructing my house. I have been using rain water + bore well water and now more recently the municipality water over the last 10 years. Works well, just use basic filters (I use Rainy) and it works well.

re: Home Construction / Makeover / Maintenance Thread

I am in a ground floor flat. The kitchen sink is connected to a drain on the floor with a normal PVC pipe. The drain has a plastic grate. Other than that the washing machine drain also is inserted into the grate of the same drain.

Recently, there was a mouse in the kitchen but I was able to get it rid of it. Now I was wondering how it came in - and if it can come in through the drain? I checked with the plumber, he said the drain has a nani trap below the floor & only if the nani trap is broken, can a mouse come through the drain. But you can't figure out if the trap is broken easily - you may have to break the area around it & pull it out.

I was wondering if anyone knows of an easier way or if not, then is there some non-invasive way to make sure mouse don't come in through the drain.

I was using one of the commercial filters and saw it was wasting lot of water. Now I pass it through a drum filled with Sand and the output goes to the borewell pit. I get the sand cleaned every year.

The borewell pipe has holes covered with stainless steel mesh and surrounded with small aggregate stone for about 7 feet.

Terrace is tiled with white heat reflecting tiles and just need to keep it clean !

You can try checking out the Interior Plus experience centre in Horamavu, also the No broker experience at the ring road, Horamavu junction. You will get a fair idea of how they price everything.

One thing I have noticed is
1. Delivery date is 45days from the day the client signs the contract.
2. Very rarely does someone meet this self-claimed target.
3. Also you should not get the kitchen slab fitted in advance, wastes money and time, as interior guys will redo it anyway.
4. There are 2 types of hinges available for these modular kitchen fittings - proper brands like Hettich etc and second quality - basically they replicate the design etc costs close to 60% of the latter. Almost everyone provides a 10yr warranty on fittings. * Not applicable for water damage in most cases.

One of my friends is getting his interior done for a duplex house, I will get the contact details and pass them on to you.

You can check with Mr.Praveen, +91 9986 zero zero 874 zero.

Has anyone installed a bio septic tank instead of the traditional septic tank at their home? How has it worked out?

re: Home Construction / Makeover / Maintenance Thread

If there is a leak from an upstairs flat, then it's probably best to fix the cause of the leak in the upstairs flat itself.

However, I was wondering if something can be done at all in the downstairs flat - like some water proofing etc which will stop it from affecting the downstairs flat.
