New VW Virtus Vs Used VW Jetta

Morning!
I知 looking to purchase a car for myself and have been confused between a VW Virtus 1.0L MT or a pre-owned 2015 VW Jetta MT. My usage is of daily commute (10-12kms daily) but mostly long trips (>300 kms)

I知 confused between the two as I知 in a transferable job and work onboard ships hence the car may not be used for brief periods of time. I would like to change my car after 5 years and purchasing the Virtus is stretching my budget. I知 afraid of the pre-owned Jetta as it might give me more headache than smiles per litre but the Jetta had always been my first option.

PS - Can the jury state few more points to look out for in a pre-owned Jetta? It has run about 47k and maintained at A.S.S and looks well maintained.

Cheers!

re: New VW Virtus Vs Used VW Jetta

Nothing like a good well maintained Jetta, mine was sold on and the owner did 20000 K.M. without any issues between Bangalore and Orissa!

However, while engine as well as wear and tear parts which are common with Skodas are easy to obtain, body trim and panels will be scarce. I also note that you are Delhi based so you will only get a 2 year window of usage.

Re: New VW Virtus Vs Used VW Jetta

I love the Jetta, but cannot recommend buying an 8-year old German car to anyone. European cars require a fair share of upkeep as they age. My brother's 10-year old Jetta suffered 2 breakdowns in the last 2 years (one of them due to injectors & one a sudden clutch failure). It's otherwise been sufficiently reliable, but again, requires upkeep & maintenance (e.g. sensors, 2 injector replacements still pending, AC etc.).

Get a new Virtus with an extended warranty and enjoy your new car. The Virtus has classic VW styling and that 1.0L turbo-petrol is a fun motor (1.5L more so).

Why complicate your buy when you already have the option of the Virtus ? Get the virtus 1.5 DSG eyes closed and you won't regret it. Just please don't take the tensions of a used car especially a VAG car.

Re: New VW Virtus Vs Used VW Jetta

Firstly hop on to boodmo and check out the part prices for both and see if you're comfortable maintaining a CKD like the Jetta. Next, I hope you are considering the 1.4tsi Jetta and not a diesel one since your running absolutely would not justify buying a diesel. Finally, do look into buying a pre-owned Civic (the new yet discontinued one) most of their ownership has been during the pandemic years so you get brilliant deals on very low mileage Civics even from Honda Autoterrace tiself.

If you can get a younger (2015 is certainly too old) decently maintained 4-5 yr old 30-40k 2.0tdi Jetta (or octavia or superb or Passat) I'd say go for it over the virtus.

Better built, more frugal and more fun.

Re: New VW Virtus Vs Used VW Jetta

Although Jetta is a brilliant car, even the best of examples out there will show it's age. If I'm not wrong, it was last sold in 2017 and obtaining parts will be a pain. And German cars don't like to be idle- they tend to be more problematic if they aren't running much.

A new VW any day over a used one. If you can stretch, please go for the 1.5 TSI. I drive the Slavia 1.5 TSI & I can tell you it's a gem of an engine.

Re: New VW Virtus Vs Used VW Jetta

The Jetta TDi is fairly reliable. Minor electronic issues do crop up but it’s a solid vehicle. Virtus and Jetta maybe available at a similar price point but the Jetta is from a segment above. Most of the parts used are of a superior quality. Aftermarket support is best. I would honestly suggest, You consider a DSG and not the MT. The DSG is way better than the MT and helps one explore the true potential of the Jetta. The cost of replacement of the dual clutch on the DSG is marginally higher than the clutch set on the MT. The Jetta DSG is a beautiful car and with sedans dying, it’s worth getting one if you can.

Re: New VW Virtus Vs Used VW Jetta

Unless you can see clearly that the car has been maintained properly, do not go for a 8 year old German car. The Jetta is definitely a better car, but at 8 years of age, it is now entering the phase of its life where it will require maintenance (and money).

Go for the Virtus - its a driver's car and is fun to drive.

47k km is not too much for a VW, but it can bring you headaches anytime. I bought a used Laura back in the day and though the car was maintained at the ASS and looked clean as new, it went into Limp mode (it faced Turbo issues) 10 days after I bought it. The ASS asked for about 1.8 Lakhs to fix, but thankfully, I was able to get it fixed at a service senter in Bangalore for about 15,000. Even though the car did not give issues after that, I never had the peace of mind in driving it (specially long distances).

As a fellow VW owner, there's no way I'd trust a 8 year old VW with sporadic usage. During COVID we didn't use the (at that time 5 year old) Vento as much and there were days I turned the car on after 10 days of disuse to be greeted by a rainbow of lights on the cluster, mostly ABS sensor related but that could have crippled the car because it's an automatic.

If it were a Toyota, Hyundai, or Honda I would have suggested it though. During the same time, my 18 year old Elantra was locked in a basement parking station for a year and 3 months and despite having heavily rusted body panels, suspension and brakes, it turned on with a recharged battery and I drove it out of there.

Re: New VW Virtus Vs Used VW Jetta

Driving both back to back, and spending time with both of these cars, I will straight up suggest the Jetta. But please look out for a 2015+ Jetta, which is the facelifted version, the MK6.5, if you’re getting one that is, and look for quite low mileage cars too. Why I would pick jetta is:

1. Much more solidly built, built like a tank.
2. Way better suspension, and the interiors feel more premium, if you keep the fancy new features aside.
3. Despite being the older car, the Jetta is the better performer on the road with all that grunt and torque, it’ll outrun the Virtus GT on the straights and the Jetta corners way better.
4. A bigger car, next segment, has more space any day, and is more practical too.
5. Much more fuel efficient, and the MK6.5 design grows on you as time passes.
6. Has more mod potential than the Virtus, my friends Jetta has about 205hp and 500nm torque on the crank with just a stage 2 remap on stock turbo, especially the diesel, imho forget the 1.4 TSI, and get the 2.0 diesel Jetta.

Post remapping a Jetta, you’ll forget even the 320d or any other 2.0 diesels. The car even at stock form performs brilliantly, and at the same time is frugal at most. Just hunt for a well maintained Jetta, nothing even comes close.

As someone who has had an octavia (same as a Jetta except for looks) I found that while the car was pure joy to drive, the maintenance cost was exhorbitant after 5 years. I'd say, given your long periods of absence, go for a reliable Maruti or Hyundai. Much more peace of mind, and much lower maintenance costs!

Re: New VW Virtus Vs Used VW Jetta

Since you'll be changing the car in 5 years, I would suggest getting a well maintained Jetta. Why take the major brunt of depreciation?

If you're in Delhi then part sourcing is anyway much easier here as well.

Jetta being a car from a segment above will anyday give you a better experience overall and you will end up actually saving money even if you have to spend a bit on preventive and scheduled maintenance. Heck, invest the upfront money you will save properly and it will fund your expenss easily!

Additionally, if you're planning to mod the car, you won't have to worry about warranty and stuff. Our lives are way too short to not drive these beauties while we still can.

Why not get an Octavia/Superb 1.8 TSI of the same vintage? Smooth and fast. Faster than a Virtus, faster than a Jetta
