Hi

I am planning a possible trip to Thekkady 2 weeks from now. My plan is to halt at Madurai overnight after driving from Bangalore, and drive to Kumily/ Thekkady the next day. Bangalore- Madurai should be fast on NH7 as reported by many on this forum, so I am just looking for the condition of Madurai- Kumily.

If the route is rather bad, I will reconsider changing the trip to another place.

A quick update would be great

Only the final ascent from Kambam to Kumily - hardly 5 kms or so - has some bad roads, rest of the route is OK.

Yup.. Vandiperiyar all the way to Kumily and over onto the plains the road is badly broken.

Hi DrVjy, I am also planning to do an exactly similar roadtrip last week of this month. BLR-MDU, stay overnight in MDU, next day drive to Kumily via Theni, Utthamapalyam on NH-220. Further on, i am driving to Munnar.

I am also researching various threads for the road condition frm Theni to Kumily and also Kumily to Munnar.

Regular users of these roads can throw some light please !!!

Amit came from Kumarakom via the Kumily route. The part where he said he covered the first 120 Km in 4 hours is the stretch of NH220 through the ghats. If you check the previous posts by Amit, he had mentioned, it was very painful to go via NH47 to Kumarakom.

He also mentioned the Theni road to be dusty.

Did a Kottayam-Bangalore yesterday. Kottayam-Peermedu-VandiPeriyar-Kumily-Theni-Dindugal-Salem-Bangalore.

Kottayam-Peermedu - Good roads. Mostly pothole free
Peermedu-VandiPeriyar-Kumily - Broken in parts, especially towards Kumily
Kumily-Theni-Dindugal - Broken in many places.
Dindugal-Salem-Bangalore. - Bliss

Plan to take the same route to come back to Bangalore but from Alleppy?? How long did it take from Kottayam to Bangalore??

Is at least 50 km/h possible on Kumily- Theni or is it even worse than that?

I am also driving to Kottayam on 24th through the same route. Planning to start at around 5AM form my home and reach Kottayam by 6PM.

Took around 11 hours from Kottayam to Bangalore. Kottayam:9.30 AM, Kumily : 2 PM, Dindugal: 3 30 PM, Bangalore : 8 PM.

Are you sure this isn't a typo ? You seem to have taken 4.5 hrs for the Kottayam-Kumily stretch (around 105 kms or so) and only 1.5 hrs for the 150 kms from Kumily to Dindigul ?? I'd think the timing for Kumily would probably be around 12/12:30

I am planning Bangalore-Kottayam on 25th. Not yet decided on the route.
