Also whats the best route for Karkala to Udupi? Is it better to do it via Padubidri - join NH66?

Thanks in advance.
1) via Bajagoli

2) Fastest will be Karkala-Belman-Shirva-Katpadi-Udupi....roads are also good....but then Padubidri route is only marginally slower but then increases distance by 7-8 Kms...

If final destination is Manipal, fastest will be Karkala-Bailur-Hiriyadka-Manipal

2) Katapadi route has some bumps in between and some blind curves too and hence, should be careful while taking this route

Some road expansion work was happening, when I took this route during Feb'24

Some unseasonal rains in Mangaluru and hence, should check the local weather before taking this route.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

For someone who wants to avoid the roadwork all together and enjoy a leisurely drive, the Nelamangala -Belur-Aldur-Balehonnur-Agumbe-Brahmawara- Udupi looks good.

The turn towards Agumbe can be easily missed on this stretch and needs to keep an eye out after Jayapura. A miss will land you in Koppa.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Travelled from Mangalore on 21-Apr.

Took the Mangalore > Bantwal > Kalladka > Uppinangady > Shirady > Sakleshpur > Hassan route

Lot of under construction sections between Bantwal and Shirady. No craters but unpleasant. From there in roads are good. After Sakleshpur roads are great. Last time I travelled the Sakleshpur by pass was not open. Now it is and it's great! Total driving time to Hebbal flyover was about 7.5 hours with a 45 minute break for lunch.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hi, I usually take Shiradi Ghat or charmady ghat but want to avoid them this time. What are the other routes you guys would recommend?
a) via bisle ghat
b) via madikeri
c) via Agumbe ghat or
d) via Kudremukha
Thanks.

You have not mentioned your destination. If it is M'lore, you can opt for Madikeri/Sampaje as you only have bad roads between Mani <> BC Road.

If it's Udupi, you can opt for Agumbe Ghats(Hassan > Belur > Jayapura > Agumbe > Hebri > Udupi).

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Need some inputs on the best road as well as the road conditions.

I am traveling next week to Kundapura with my family, I typically take the Charmadi ghat over others whenever I drive to the coast.

This time, I am planning to take the below route

Bangalore - Hassan - Belur - Aldur - Agumbe - Kundapura

Two reasons for this route, it's the shortest and want to try Agumbe Ghat.
I am not sure of the road conditions between Belur-Aldur. I last drove on this road about 20 months ago and it was in decent condition except for few rough patches. Any update on the current road conditions?

Also I am planning to drive through the night, leave Bangalore by 10:30PM and plan to reach Kundapura before 8AM. Any thoughts on the traffic conditions in the night from safety perspective will be helpful.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I am planning to travel to Mangalore mid May in a hatchback. I'm planning to take the Hassan > Sakleshpur > Uppinangady > Mangalore. I heard the Sakleshpur bypass is open and there are very dusty bad patches post Gundya but I'm assuming this is still the shortest and the fastest route if we can bear with the dust and some bad patches. Please let me know if any of you guys have taken this route or if there are some alternatives which are faster. I'm planning to leave on a Saturday morning around 8 AM.

Yes, it seems to be the quickest route, Belur to Aldur is in decent shape, except for a few patches .
Only issue is that after Balehonnur till Someshwara(base of Agumbe) strech of 75 kms is gonna be a pain, as it is full of curves and you cannot maintain decent speeds.
Especially with full load, rear passengers will get tossed around often.

Also night drive should be safe, as you wont get any empty unpopulated streches like on Charmadi. Agumbe ghat will get over quick !

I'd say completely avoid Sakleshpur route, if you're on a Hatchback.
Drove it last week in my C3, it was beyond terrible. Large SUVs can manage, But hatchbacks you'll suffer.
You are better off taking the Mysore - Madikeri route to reach Mani, from there till BC road is unavoidable bad roads but is ok and manageable.
You'll encounter heavy trafffic from Mysore outskirts till Madikeri(2 lane Highway), but traffic will be flowing and wont slow you down.

Agree here. Mysore > Madikeri > Sullia > Mangalore is the best alternative at this point in time. Did a round trip last weekend and was able to cover the stretch in 7 hours including 1 hour break both ways. I started from Bannerghatta Road (Meenakshi mall) to Mangalore city. Saturday 8AM will be peak traffic time even on the BLR - MYS express way. It will be better to start early.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hello Bhpians

Left Bangalore today at 4 pm and reached Mangalore at 10.15 pm in my Ignis. One stop of 20 min at Sakleshpur. Took Shiradi. Roads upto Gundya are good. After Gundya upto BC road there are few patches of bad roads in between good roads. But nothing unmanageable. I guess would take the same road back to Bangalore as it saves time and distance. Had taken Sampaje a few months back. Roads were excellent but felt a bit too long. Today's drive wasn't.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Folks, I am planning a road trip from Bangalore to Mangalore and want to cover Dharmastala and Kuke Subramanyam temple en route. What is the best route option? I will be traveling with my family in a Tucson.

Any recommendation in terms of pit stop if I am starting from Bangalore by 5:00 AM?

This is my first drive to Mangalore and I will be relying heavily on Google Maps.

Kukke and Dharmasthala are on either side of NH75. Considering you would be on SUV, you can take the regular B'lore > Hassan > Sakleshpur > Gundya > Kukke.

From Kukke, you have to trace back the same route backwards to the NH and take diversion to Dharmasthala.

If you are starting at 5AM, you would find many a restaurants on either side of NH75 until Hassan. 'Swathi Delicacy' and 'Paakashala' are decent pitstops.
