Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I will be driving to Yedapadavu (between Gurupur and Mudbidri) tomorrow. This is the route I am planning
Bangalore-Hasan-Belur-Charmadi-Belthangadi-Mudbidri-Yedapadavu
Is Hasan-Belur is better or Sakleshpur-Mudigere better?
Also is Charamdi route better or Shiradi route? Havent driven on Shiradi in more than an year.
I will be driving an XUV. Driving alone to Yedapadavu. But on the way back will have 4-5 people including my 6 months old son.

Last Sat/Sun been to Dharma & Kukke & back on Sun. Shiradi is in good condition. Road from highway to Dharma (22kms) lot of bit deep potholes in some stretches & some good stretches also. Not travelled thru' Charmadi recently.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Am planning to use the following route:

Hassan -- Sakleshpur -- Gundya -- Kukke -- Jalsoor -- Cherkala -- Kanhangad

How is the road condition from "Gundya -- Kukke -- Jalsoor -- Cherkala -- Kanhangad"?

Ride comfort being the priority, rather than the distance, I would take the Uppinangadi route if the road condition of the above is not good enough.

Gundya - Kukke: Good

Kukke - Guttigaru - Sonangeri - Jalsoor: After Kukke, road repair was in progress. 3-4 km of rough roads before Guttigaru. My cousin just now informed that this 3-4 KM rough patch is ready. After this stretch, its excellent all the way until Jalsoor.

Jalsoor - Cherkala: Excellent

I don't know the road conditions of Cherkala - Kanhangad. It was good until Bekal but haven't gone further.

Don't take the Uppinangady route. The Uppinangady - Puttur stretch is bad.

Sakaleshpur - Mudigere is bad at many places. Shiradi is fully patched up now.

Thank you. Your update is spot on

I reached kanhangad around 2pm, having started from e-city @ 5am with an hour plus for breaks. Very good roads, though a bit twisty. By far the best route available for me from bangalore to kanhangad and beyond.

The only problem in the Kukke - Jalsoor - Cherkala is during the Shabarimala season. Pilgrims take this route after visiting Kukke to reach Kasargod and you should see how the drivers of Trax, Tum-Tum, Pom-Pom, etc drive in this stretch. They drive very rash and don't honk or slow down in any of the blind curves causing accidents. We have to watch out for these type of vehicles in the curves. Else, its almost traffic free for rest of the year.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Travelled during the weekend; Shiradi is all patched up;

Food on the way between sakleshpur and bangalore :
@Sakleshpur - not many options (restrooms not good); There are some new dhabas after Sakleshpur but i chose to drive to Hassan;
Fuel stop : There are a few new fuel stations after Sakleshpur.

@ Hassan - Take the first exit off the Hassan Bypass; at about 2 KM there is Mayura which was good;Drive out of the hotel and take a right at the Belur Junction and you are back on the Hassan Bypass.

You could try 'Mythri' near sakleshpur bus stand. Decent food with clean rest rooms.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

How's the condition of Shiradi ghat now? Any idea if it's going to be "closed" for reconstruction?

The condition of Shiradi right now is such that, I didn't even bother putting up a post after my drive last week.

'Shiradi Ghat' roads couldn't be better. This is the best, i had ever seen these stretch of ghat road.

AFAIK, the reconstruction would not happen any sooner, as only they have shown the intent and the tender/bid process is yet to start.

For those driving along this route after some time, please do watch out for the numerous rumbler type speedbreakers that have come along Chennarayapatna and Hassan bypasses.

I will be driving tonight . Are there signboards warning you of these speedbreakers?
