Hi Yeshwanth. Thanks a lot for all the informations mate.:thumbs up

Also went through your website. Its excellent. All the best.

Shiradi does not look too bad from the pictures, assuming these are the worst stretches. I've seen it much much worse in 2007 IIRC. If not for the traffic jams, looks quite doable. Kushalnagar - Madikeri - Sampaje is not much better either.

Sure Cnaganathan,

I have passed the details of your car to my brother.

His car is a ZEN Estilo, Golden color, I am not aware of the number.

His current plan is to leave at 6:30 AM from Bangalore. But might be +/- due to the kid and other household related aspects.

if you meet him on the way or at Belur, say hi to him.

+1 on that. I think this looks much better and quiet drivable(atleast in the pics).
May be I am now tempted to take this road instead of Madikeri.:D

Yashwanth(kadri007) can you comment on this please:.

Thanks a lot MCR, Ampere, S3va.

Wish you all a safe and happy trip.

Dont forget to take a print out of the distances posted in Page 100.

For cars 1. Thanks for the pics . Actually if you observe carefully the pics from 6 to 10 pics are not smooth roads, its just jelly which were put some time back to eyewash public.

Only the starting strech of some 3 Kms is good where work had started some weeks back. Rest is hell.

Understood that Shiradi ghats are a treat to the eyes to drive, but personally would prefer Sampaje ghats than Shiradi. Sorry if i've mentioned this already, but the heavy vehicle movement on the Shiradi stretch is something to watch out for. Our car once just saved itself from being brushed within inches, by a mining truck that was scaling down a bend. The thing took a really wide turn, getting into the opposite lane where i was waiting for it to pass. Sampaje is very very peaceful, atleast by this count.

Thanks for the wishes. I have taken the print of the distances mentioned by you.
Coming to the rest of the distance, do you think it is similar to the pictures posted above or slightly worse than that? Also is it possible to cover this if we go real slow?

I think some of you can meet at Kamath Hotel in Udayapura for Breakfast. Its 3 hrs from Bangalore.

I would not advice since i travelled just 2 weeks back. Even though i came in volvo my back was aching. Deffinitely not with family on board.

Instead you can opt for Charmadi ghat. The views are more beautiful than Shiradi at some places. Sampage ghat is also beautiful but its not a big ghat and not as beautiful as Charmadi and Shiradi.

And as Dkamath pointed out. Please be carful of big vehicles in the Bangalore - Hassan - Mangalore stretch.

Cities small vehicles are the rulers but on highways and ghats the big vehicle rules.

OT: Any update on the CBI enquiry that was initiated on the Shirdai ghat work that happened about 2 years back ? I remember the roads on the ghat were mirror like which lasted only for a limited period !

When people were raising voices sometime back the goverment said about the CBI enquiry. But now no news of it.

They repaired for 6 months and the road didnt even last a month.

Again its going to be the same. Some small contractor was doing the work this time which will not last long.

It would be better if the goverment gives it to big companies like L&T, HCC, etc and make it a a toll road.

God knows when the goverment and authorities will wake up and see the public suffering.

I too going for a vacation to Mangalore Sightseeing and probably drive to bekal fort/beach. If weather permits, to pitch a tent at bekal beach with family of two with a kid. I'm planning to leave by 8AM 25th, in my lovely canary yellow palio with no TBHP stickers on it. Hope to reach mangalore by 4PM..

I'm travelling through Charmadi ghat....

That' s a nice idea, but they don't allow to go down to waters near the fort since its dangerous. You can go to the state resort/park near by.

My brother drive from Bangalore (BTM Layout) to a village near Udupi today. He drove his Zen Estilo with 4 adults and a child on board.

They left from BTM Layout at 6:15 AM and reached the destination at 8 PM, Total 430 KMs with several breaks

The route followed was
----------------------
BTM Layout - Majestic - Maadi road - Kengeri - Magadi Town - CR Patana - Kamat Upachar - Hassan - Belur - Chikmagalur -Aldur - Agumbe - Someshwar - Hebri -Udupi.

Details of the breaks
---------------------
10 minutes break at Majestic
60 minutes break at Kamat Upachar at Udayapura (after CR patana)
35 minutes break at Belur Temple
60 minutes break at Chikmagalur for lunch
15 minutes detour towards Charmadi (total 3 x 2 = 6 KM extra) due to wrong road from Chikmagalur
20 minutes tea break between Agumbe and Sringeri
20 minutes break at SUN set point in agumbe ghat
30 minutes snack break at someshwar
3 breaks to take photographs (total 10 minutes)

Total breaks 11 totalling 260 minutes (4 hours 20 minutes)

Total drive time
-----------------
13 hours 45 minutes minus 4 hours 20 minutes = 9 hours 25 minutes for 430 KMs = 45 KMPH average speed.

His feedback about the road condition is
---------------------------------------
approx 85% of the distance is good roads, 15% (65KM) is bad to very bad conditions. Agumbe to Hebri (~ 20KMs is in very bad condition). rest all is drivable.

He has thanked the contributors of this thread for updating the road conditions and helping him choose the best route enaling him to reach the destination safely.

I am updating this as per his request so that it can benefit other travelers on this stretch.
