1)Pune – Bombay Bangalore Highway – Shirwal – Satara – Karad – Kolhapur – Nipani – Ajra – Amboli Ghat – Pernem – Panaji (Arnd 430km, 8Hrs)

2)Pune – Bombay Bangalore Highway – Shirwal – Satara – Karad – Kolhapur – Nipani – Sankeshwar – Gadhinglaj – Ajra – Amboli Ghat – Pernem – Panaji

3)Pune – Mumbai Bangalore Highway – Shirwal – Mahabaleshwar – Poladpur – NH 17 - goa

I drove the kolhapur nipani amboli route last month. The twandi ghat to ajra route is horrible and narrow. If you want to go via amboli then I suggest you drive further 12 kims after twandi ghat to sankeshwar and take the underpass to turn right on to gadinglaj-ajra-amboli. This is much better than going via uttur ajra.
I am contemplating going via gaganbawda or phondaghat next trip of mine

harshadp26 Please don't take the gaganbawda route just now.l Cos it's been reported to be bad with one bridge damaged. Someone took the phonda ghat route which has a bad section between kolhapur and radahnagiri. Amboli ghat is pretty decent, except for the ocassional rough patches here and there, but go via sankeshwar, avoid the turning at kavery restaurant at the twandi ghat which goes via uttur to ajra.

Hi Guys,

I am planning a trip to Goa (froom Bombay) on the 8th. of December. The last time I went via Pune, Kolhapur, Sankeshwar, Ajra, Gadhinglaj, Sawantwadi, Goa. Is this route still good? Would appreciate any feedback from anyone who has done this trip recently.

Thanks a lot.

Guys, am driving tonight to Goa from Mumbai. I will be taking the Mumbai - Pune Expressway - Pune Bypass - satara - kolhapur - Goa route. I intend to reach Kolhapur by 7 AM tommorow. Can anyone suggest me which of the routes to consider from here on and the current road conditions. Will the conditions be foggy early in the morning?. I will be driving in a Zen Estilo.

COUGAR, Really? This is the nicest news I've heard in a long time. Someone mentioned that one of the bridges had been washed away during the rains or someting like that on the GB route.

I've had a good view at this on wikimapia, and here is what I've figured Somewhere at Gaganbawda ST stand, a right turn takes you to BhuiBawda Ghat One of the twin Gaganbawda ghats, that leads you to Karephatan,
A left turn takes you to Karul / Gaganbawda Ghat Karul Ghat the other of the twin Gaganbawda ghats, Vaibhavvadi Station, Kokisare, and Telere Naka
After both ghats you come to a fork. At either fork you need to take the outer road. i.e. right one going towards Karephatan after the BhuiBawda Ghat and left one towards the telere naka after the Karul Gaganbawda ghat. If you take the inner one you can go to inner road of the other ghat fork..

So COUGAR tell me more, and which route did you drive on, the left ghat or the right one going from Kolhapur? And also the way to get off from NH4 to drive in to Kolhapur and then which state highway?

Need to drive to South Goa on the 12th and back on the 15th, out for a family holiday and couple of my friends joining me there from Pune and Baroda.

Please suggest the best route.

I got to know of two ways which are relatively good,

1. Bangalore-Hubli-Karwar-Goa
2. Bangalore-Hubli-Belgaum-Goa.

Please suggest the best route (best road conditions). I don't mind driving longer distance. But don't wan't to go to Mangalore and drive NH-17 to Goa.

cheers,

First night, you can target to reach Udaipur or even Ahmedabad if you can stretch it.Udaipur has better hotels as per various reports on the forum.Hotel Anjali @ AMD is a recommended place to stay for TBhpians on the NH8.

Second night you could target to stay at Pune.Ginger on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is a good place to stay.

Third night you could be in goa.

Thanks Ranjit. Can you give me a more detailed route map with distance to cover. Or any link or previous posted that has already mentions the same. Can the route avoid Mumbai? I do not intend to enter Mumbai. Your help is much appreciated. Thanks

You can follow the following log book for route info on Gurgaon-Bombay:
(more info on onward journey from Bombay to Delhi)
http://hvkumar.googlegroups.com/web/...Mt0t6nY0uV5FIQ

You can follow the following route plan for Bombay-Goa (via Ajra, Amboli):
http://hvkumar.googlegroups.com/web/...jzbYnpnkpmxcWg

To bypass Bombay, you can check out the following guide:
HOW TO BYPASS BOMBAY via New Bombay - North side - hvkumar | Google Groups

As ranjitp1 suggested, you can make it to Pune on Day 2 from Udaipur. In case you lag behind, you can stay at Vapi, BHilad, Talasari, Charoti, Manor or Ghodbunder (before Bombay).

I suggest after Mumbai, instead of travelling through the Konkan, you should take the Pune -> Satara -> Kolhapur -> Sankeshwar -> Gadhinglaj -> Amboli -> Sawantwadi -> Banda -> Mhapusa Road. Thought the Mumbai Goa road is scenic, its a single road all the way till Sawantwadi, if you go to Pune Kolhapur, then its just like an expressway and you can go real fast right till the Sankeshwar crossing and from there you can take a right to Amboli ghat which will take you down to Sawantwadi where you will rejoin the Mumbai - Goa highway. You could save a few hours if you go by this way.
On map my india, you can search for Pune to Goa via Gadhinglaj or Amboli and you should get details.
