Yes. 45C is also a good 2L road from Tanjore-Kumbakonam.

Roads are very good, only disadvantage is signages are very bad. Except for Tamil Sangam and Big Temple, there is no sign board to any other destination in whole Tanjore town :p Similarly lost way somewhere in middle of NH45C on the way to Kumbakonam as well. This was in October 2010.

Personally i would also suggest, the Salem route ampere suggests, you can enjoy 4-lanes Bangalore-Namakkal and Trichy-Tanjore.

On Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday [15/16/17 Feb 2011], I drove on this route: Bangalore-Namakkal-Thuraiyur-Trichy-Grand Anicut [Kallanai]-Thiruvaiyaru-Swamimalai-Kumbakonam [NH 7/SH 161/24/NH 45/SH 22] and back. The roads are manageable with a few km of bad stretches between Namakkal and Thuraiyur. SH 22 was good with almost nil traffic at night. From Thanjavur, you can take NH 45 C to reach Kumbakonam/Swamimalai or SH 27 to reach Thiruvaiyaru depending upon your requirement.

Thank you all for the inputs :) I considered train, but since the plan is at last minutes getting tickets is a nightmare :(

And this Namakkal Thuraiyur route seems to be the best under current scenario. Any idea how long it takes?

I have mapmyindia installed on my mobile. Hopefully it will guide me right ;)

You should be able to hit Trichy in 5-6 hours max.

We left Prestige Tech Park, Marathahalli Ring Road by 5:30 PM, took one hour break at BP COCO retail outlet/A2B Ghar Dhaba at Chinnar, near Krishnagiri Toll Plaza, for refuelling us & my Linea and reached Trichy bypass road by mid-night.

Blr-Mayavaram today may be best via Tanjore/Trichy only.

Route:

Blr-Salem-Namakkal-Thurauyur-Trichy-Tanjore-Kumbakonam-Mayavaram.

Dot go via Musiri. Its bad. Use the alternative.
Tanjore can be by-passed via SH22 (which directly takes you to Papanasam).

Last but not least:
Also if you are not keen on drive, you can take the Mysore-Mayavaram express. Very convenient!

I just returned from a week end tour from Bangalore to Kumabakonam & back, as I had seen in this foram and even the locals there had said that the musri road was in bad condition and had to go via Thurauyur, however since we were traveling at night this road has become quite horrible & the directions not clear, on our return we wanted to take our chances along musri road & very pleased to see it is newly done & in good condition, we were on the look out for the infamous bad stretch along the way and we were already at Nammakal, then on its GQ.
will post detail travel log later, just a quick road update for others.

Wow ! goot to know the Musiri route is good now. Did you notice the thottiyam stretch by any chance.

Finally, people can take straight route again !

Did a Chennai- Tiruchi- Kumbakonam- Chennai this weekend. Good news is that 4 laning of Thanjavur - Tiruchi is complete and toll booths are being readied. Road is pretty good to drive with speeds of 120+ possible if you account for oncoming vehicles coming towards you (including bikes & trucks) on the right most lane on your side of the dividor. Thanjavur-Kumbakonam is the same winding road with so much traffic and patches & mild pot holes.

Hello,

I am planning to do road trip on june 3 from Bangalore to Mayavaram from parents 60 th bday..I need to drive down in my car ( since I have to start after my work ) after 10 PM hence I dont have choice to go in bus or in Train. Since this is night Journey Kindly suggest me a route from Bangalore to Mayavaram, I was thinking of taking
Route 1 :Bangalore -Salem-Namkal-Trichy-tanjore-Kumbakonam-Mayavaram.
But one of my friend suggested that it is quite a long route and he suggested the following one.
Route 2 :Bangalore-Krishnagiri-Vellore-Dindivanam-Pondi-Kadalur-Chindabaram-Mayavarm.
When I checked in Google I found both routes have same distance but not sure which one to take it up.

Also when I was searching in google I found out going to Thiruvanamalai Via Vellore and then to Panruti then to Mayavaram is also a another option..hence im totally confused since I need to do night journey with my wife. request you please suggest a good route

Your Route 1 will be the quickest and best route. You will get 4L till Namakkal and from there on decent road till Trichy (Heard that this stretch has been patched up). Trichy to Tanjore should be good as well. It may take a while to do Tanjore-kumbakonam. But, the distance is very less. Hence, I strongly suggest Route 1.

^^ +1 to it. Going through the Krishnagiri - Tiruvannamalai stretch during nightime would be a serious pain. Similarly if you plan to go via Vellore and then onto Panruti which I assume you are thinking of going via either Gingee - Villupuram or via Gingee - Tindivanam you would have to live with some bad sections between Vellore & Gingee. Also the road conditions after Vikravandi towards Panrutti - Vadalur is not in great condition and not advisable during nights.

Its best to go via Trichy as Ramesh and Srikanth said. Only caution is watch for Namakkal exit from NH7. In the speed you may cross without knowing. You need to get into the town to take the Musiri stretch.

Thanks Ramesh,Srikanth and Ampere. Kindly let me know where exactly to look for Musiri out.Because this is first time im travelling in this route. After Salem I need to go to Namakal route correct ? from there how do I proceed.

soarer, as Amp has pointed out, you need to enter the Namakkal town from the NH7 and then ask for Thottiyam-Musiri route in Namakkal. This shouldn't be a big deal.
