Tambaram-Sriperumbudur Route Options

Many of us living in South Chennai around Tambaram area need to take the Chennai bypass and reach Sriperumbudur in a roundabout way, when we need to take GQ. It is around 52 kms to take bypass from Tambaram to Poonamallee and then take left towards Sriperumbudur.

The direct routes to Tambaram are only around half the distance (23 kms). There are two routes, almost parallel:
1. The Mudicur road, which goes through Mudichur and Manimangalam.
2. The Darkas road, which goes through Kishkinta and Somangalam.

Yesterday I was really bored and wanted to drive somewhere, so decided to try both these routes to reach the GQ. Basically so that I can use this info when going on any "trips".

Mudichur Road: The stretch from Tambaram till Manimangalam is very bad. After that, from Manimangalam to the next 15 kms or so, the road is very good. It has excellent curves, water on both sides and very scenic! I regretted not taking my camera. But after that 15kms or so, the road gets REALLY bad.

Darkas Road: While returning I decided to try the Darkas road. In one word, this road is H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E. Drive here if you really hate your car.

Conclusion: The extra 30 kms is worth it, it is better to take the Chennai Bypass ANY day. The toll, extra distance and the truck traffic at Poonamallee are ALL worth it, to save the torture to the car.

Thanks for the update. Yes I have heard about Mudichur road being in a bad condition.

Surprising that some roads in TN continue to stay bad. Almost all the state roads are in excellent condition. Just did some driving in Dharmapuri district and boy was I impressed with the roads.

In Tambaram, you will find a road opposite the railway gate i.e Mudichur road. Right now this is blocked because of flyover construction. You have to go inside Tambaram market, and take one of the lefts (one is thru Vidhya theatre) and reach the Mudichur road.

After going down 3 or 4 kms, you will find a road turning right, and there will be a very small board written "Sriperumbudur" in Tamil. You have to take that. Manimangalam is 3 or 4 kms from there.

I was surprised to see the scenery after Manimangalam. But again I repeat, these roads are torture for the car.

Thanks. I guess you know about the Service road of the Chennai By pass road.

One junction is along the Mudichur road. I guess that will be easy for me.

I will try out. Thanks again.

Re: Avoid the Tambaram-Sriperumbudur direct routes

Has anyone tried this section recently? How is the road these days! I live in Tambaram and plan to drive to Bangalore in a day or two. I have mostly taken the by-pass road - wanted to try as this is much shorter. Thanks.

The road through Manimangalam is bad single road lot of potholes and the shoulders of the road is bad.
The better route will be Padappai-Oragadam-Pondur-Sriperambadur.
A flyover construction is going on at Oragadam that is the only bad stretch.

Re: Avoid the Tambaram-Sriperumbudur direct routes

I think the best option is to hit Kanchi directly. One does have the issue of crossing Kanchi town though.
The road from Vandalur-Orragadam is 4L.

But I dont know is crossing Kanchi is a bigger pain or crossing Sriperumbudur (and the road also being bad!)

Or you could try
Tambaram - Pallavaram - Anakaputhur - Kunrathur - Sriperambadur. Not sure how bad the Kunrathur - Sriperambadur road is. I had tried this 2 months back. It was ok to travel in daytime.

How about Tambaram-Oragadam-Sriperumbudur? Tambaram-Oragadam will be decent. I don't know about Oragadam-Sriperumbudur section. It comes to 40 kms.

Re: Avoid the Tambaram-Sriperumbudur direct routes

I took the Sriperumbudhur - Tambaram route via Manimangalam on Monday. The road is not in great shape with some big potholes etc. I did the stretch at around 2 in the night so the traffic was less and was able to navigate my car around the potholes which may not be possible during day time with lot of tipper traffic.

Crossing Kanchipuram town is a big headache. I took that option on my way to Bangalore the same day morning. After leaving Perungalthaur at 6:30 by the time we crossed Kanchipuram it was 8. The road between Chengalpet - Kanchipuram also has some potholes which would become bad as the rains start to come regularly in the next couple of months.

I usually take this route when i visit Ambur/Ranipet or Bangalore and back.

I did this route while travelling to Ambur yesterday morning. No problem during the day. Yesterday night, while i was returning, it started raining and i had big trouble in seeing the road. The High Beam used by the on-coming traffic was causing more stress.

The road is fairly good with almost 40 speed breakers in the 22 km stretch from Anakaputhur to Sriperambadur. Best avoided at night while raining.

This is my preferred route.

Oragadam-Sriperumbudur stretch is fantastic expect few 100 meters moderate/bad roads at the end.

With the over bridge connecting East and West Tambaram opened, its a breeze connecting the western part of Tambaram to get into Padapai/Oragadam road

Re: Avoid the Tambaram-Sriperumbudur direct routes

@Surprise, can you also please comment on Sriperumbudur - Oragadam - Padapai - Vandalur - Mambakkam - Kelambakkam - Kovalam : please.

From your above post, i guess Sriperumbudur - Oragadam - Padapai - Vandalur section is good.

Any idea on the balance stretch?
