Hi
We plan to do a Delhi-Goa-Delhi round trip in October. 2/3 guys travelling in a Honda City. We plan to take NH3 (via Indore) on our onward journey and NH8 on the way back. Tentative route plan as follows:
Day 1 - New Delhi to Indore via Agra & Gwalior
Day 2 - Indore to Goa via Kolhapur
Day 3,4 & 5 - Goa
Day 6 - Goa to Ahmedabad
Day 7 - Ahmedabad to Delhi
Please pass the following pointers:
1. Current route condition (especially the onward journey route)
2. Suggested places to stay.
3. If we do Indore to Goa in one day, chances are we won't reach the Ghat roads (MH to Goa) before night. Is it safe to drive on Ghat roads at night?

From my last venture into MP, the roads were literally non existent. Would really recommend you to stick to the NH8 route via Rajasthan, Gujarat and so on.

Better to take Mumbai/Pune option than central India. Thats much better and faster moving. Indore/Pune is quite bad at many places.

I have not travelled on NH3. So will limit my inputs to NH8 / NH4 I have travelled in August / September this year.
Route condition:
Mumbai - Nipani section is good except Pune- Satara which is in very bad condition. The Pune bypass (NH4) has improved compared to last year but still sad. Mumbai - Pune, Kolhapur - Nipani are good. Pune - Kolhapur road has lot of Two wheeler traffic. Kolhapur has a 24 hour Mc Donald which is a good stop over for a food break. Stayed at Hotel Atria in Kolhapur last week. Its an average place. I have not stayed in Hotel Pancshil but it looked like a decent property. I chose Hotel Atria as they could offer me parking. Also check out Hotel Opal as it has huge parking space inside the compound. I have not driven on the Nipani - Goa route. The traffic is better on the Pune Kolhapur road post 8 pm as two wheeler traffic is low.
Mumbai - Ahmedabad section: Good roads except for small stretches near Ankleshwar Bharuch. Senior Bhpians have posted the standard route to be taken to avoid traffic jams at Narmada bridge near Ankleshwar Bharuch stretch. I was lucky not to face jams on the narmada bridge on NH8. Dont forget to paste the mandatory yellow sticker on your front right light when you are driving in Gujarat. Stayed at Hotel Savshanti (0265-2334540, 2334255) in Baroda. There were other options but this was the only property which could offer me safe / decent parking space. Hotel presidency (0265 234 0050) is another option. I have not stayed here but had kept this as one of the option. These hotels are on R C Dutt road in Baroda.
There is a mc donalds before Surat (if you are coming from Mumbai side) which is a good stop over for a food break.
Ahmedabad - Udaipur section: I hated the road which goes from Gandhinagar to Himmatnagar as there were many potholes just as you exit Gandhinagar. The other horrible section is the Udaipur bypass road which has very slow traffic and very bad roads. I have not checked the route through the city. Himmatnagar - Udaipur road is ok with occasional potholes (small to mid size). The number of cows / animals sleeping and walking on Rajasthan highways is not a joke. They jump out of nowhere and can be dangerous at times.
Udaipur - Kishangarh section: Good roads. No major worries except the number of cattle sleeping on the highways and grazing on the dividers.
I have not driven on the Kishangarh- Delhi route as I took the Kishangarh Bhatinda megahighway to go to Ludhiana & Amritsar.
Ginger Wakad is a decent place to stay in Pune. On ginger website search for Ginger Wakad and Not Ginger Pune. Ginger Pune is located in Pimpri area which is 8 kms from Ginger Wakad.
I stayed at Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Ajmer which is good. Its a little expensive compared to other options in Kishangarh / Ajmer. Avoid Royal Heritage Hotel in Kishangarh.
I stopped at Valley View resort Udaipur for a tea / snacks break in the evening on way to Kishangarh. It is on the left side of NH8 if you are coming from Delhi side. (Hotel Valley View, Plot No.10 Nr. Maa Gayatri Hospital, Pratapnagar, Airport Road Udaipur +91 8107 172222. I could not locate any other decent place to take a break in Udaipur.
have a safe trip.

Hello friends!
This is my first post here :)
We're three guys (26-28 years) from Delhi & planning to celebrate this New Year in Goa. I love self-driven road trips like anything & have done quite a few in the past
on my Swift like :
1. Delhi - Mount Abu - Udaipur - Delhi (1500+ kms)
2. Delhi - Amritsar - Pinjore - Delhi (1000+ kms)
3. Delhi - Jaipur - Delhi (550+ kms)
4. Delhi - Agra (via Yamuna Expressway) - Delhi (500+ kms)
5. Delhi - Bharatpur (via Yamuna Expressway & exit for Mathura) - Delhi (400+ kms)
6. Delhi - Ajmer - Pushkar - Delhi (here we were two drivers) (800+ kms)
... and a few more. Most of my above trips had max 1-2 halts of 20-25 mins for lunch / tea. Udaipur to Delhi was done overnight & took me around 10+ hours.
But this time I'm planning for the longest road trip I've ever done, which will be 4000+ kms.
What we have:
1. Swift car (2 years / 30,000 kms old)
2. All 3 of us can drive & don't have any medical conditions What we expect from this road trip:
1. Awesome landscapes / Forts or tourist attractions
2. Dhaba food most of the times
3. Avoiding traffic jams as much as possible
4. 2 nights stay in Goa (preferably 30th & 31st Dec 2013)
I've done some in-depth research on the routes & need your suggestions on which one to choose : Route 1 : Delhi - Jaipur (bypass) - Udaipur (halt) - Ahmedabad (bypass) - Mumbai (halt) -- NH17 (i've read that this is very scenic, but just two-lanes wide!) -- Goa Route 2 : Delhi -- Yamuna Expressway -- Agra - Gwalior - Shivpuri - Indore -- AH 47 -- Satara - Kolhapur - Belgaum - Goa Route 3 : Delhi - Jaipur (bypass) - Udaipur (halt) - Ahmedabad (bypass) - Mumbai (halt) - Pune - Kolhapur - Belgaum - Goa
Since I could not find much info on "Route 2", so I'm not sure at which all places should we consider to halt!
Please help us take the best route or suggest your own. We would appreciate if you could also tell us at what times should we start / halt.
Thanks in advance!!

About
Route 2 : Delhi -- Yamuna Expressway -- Agra - Gwalior - Shivpuri - Indore -- AH 47 -- Satara - Kolhapur - Belgaum - Goa
Road from Gwalior to Indore is potholded 2 laned road with continous traffic. Max speeds 60kms with much damage to car.
From Mumbai to Goa , Satara Bypass section needs to be watched for.
Route 3 is best and cleanest option to take. Good clean 4 lanes all the way till Belgaum. This also gives the best facilities on the highway.

Complete no brainer.Option 3 is the reccomended.
Day 1: Delhi-Udaipur
Day 2:Udaipur-Pune
Day3:Pune-Goa
I am joining in with a couple of avid Birders and we are planning to do a long drive from Goa to Delhi via Sasan Gir NP, Little Rann of Kutch, Great Rann of Kutch, Desert National Park, Ranthambore and Bharatpur. We have around 21 days for the trip and need to be in Delhi from the 13th to the 15th of March. We would be doing the trip in my Safari Storme 4X4, which just returned from a trip to Ranchi and performed admirably.
I would welcome suggestions as to how to slot my visits to the various sites in.
Was thinking of doing the drive straight to Ranthambore via Jaipur and go to Bharatpur from there and then on to Delhi and complete my program of the 13th/15th there. From Delhi head straight to Desert NP - Great Rann - Little Rann - Gir - back to Goa.
I have been searching through and reading the Travelogues but would now need some more specific details before finalising my routes to take.
Wanted inputs on the roads and routes I would need to take and what is the condition of these. Also if we could get some recommendations of the condition of hotels/motels/guest houses on these routes.
Any and all inputs and suggestions would be most welcome.
A big thank you in advance, Guys, for your inputs.
Cheerio.
I need to essentially complete Bharatpur before the 13th because the migratories start leaving around this time.

While I haven't done this route, a colleague's brother recently did Delhi - Mumbai - Goa - Kutch - Delhi. I am told the guy took 2 weeks off from work. If I am not mistaken, they (02 in number) did it in a Santro.
If it helps - I can pass on the contact details of the person who did the drive. They returned last week/Friday.
Let me know.

The person (Nikant) had done Delhi-Udaipur-Mumbai-Gir-Diu-Bhuj-Rann of Kutch-Delhi. He did not go to Goa. I stand corrected. However, for your requirements, he can provide relevant information. I will shortly message you Nikant's contact details. I have shared your contact details with Nikant.
Happy to help.
Hello guys.
Need help.
I will be driving from Goa to Delhi from 29 Aug 15 onwards.
I had planned the tried and tested Goa-Mumbai-Surat-Vadodara-Udaipur-Jaipur-Delhi route.
However, the recent developments in Gujarat like major protests / curfews / police firing on mobs / people dying
and Army being called in has made the choice of this route questionable.
Google maps show the suggested route from Goa to Delhi as follows:-
Goa - Satara - Ahmednagar - Malegaon - Dhule - Mhow/Indore - Ratlam - Chittorgarh - Jaipur - Delhi.
In case the situation in Gujarat does not improve by Saturday, I am planning to do the following:-
Day 1 - Goa to Ahmednagar (550 km, 10 hours as per google maps).
Day 2 - Ahmednagar to Ratlam (via Malegaon - Dhule - Mhow/Indore. 556 km, 9.25 hours as per google maps).
Day 3 - Ratlam to Delhi (13 Hours as per google).
Request BHPians to chip in with whatever information they can on any of these routes.
The information available on these routes is not enough and any help will be invaluable.
Regards.
Regards.
Request for inputs guys. Need to decide by tomorrow morning.
