Yes, you need to be a member of AASI to obtain the IDP. Membership etc does not take time - it is instant. You just need to visit their office with the required docs. IDP also takes 3 to 4 days I think. Entire thing can be done in less than a week.

Call their number on their website. They are super helpful and you just need to follow their instructions.

OK, the last time I got the IDP from RTO, it was in August 2022, and I got it as a plain printout in English. I am not sure about now. But yes, this notification seems interesting. Not sure if this has been implemented though.

I do not have permissions to respond on DM so cannot do that. As for charges of AASI, just call them on their Bangalore office number and they will provide all the details. I don't exactly remember the charges and also they may change.

I do not think address difference in DL and passport should matter. I have different addresses in DL and passport (though both are Bangalore addresses).

You have enough time. Just check with AASI.

I have applied and it is approved per their website. I'm now eager to see if it'll be a single sheet or a booklet. I will post it here once I receive it.

I applied for an IDP for Turkey to KA51 RTO and got a single page IDP. Should work in Turkey since they rear English and their script is also in English. But I was looking forward to getting a booklet with multi language translation. Whereas a friend got the booklet from Jaipur RTO for the same trip.

I am renting a car in the UK and Ireland during my upcoming trip. The details regarding the validity of our Indian DL are a bit ambiguous, so if anyone has travelled recently, could you help clarify the same? And if an IDP is required, will the local RTO-issued IDP(single-page) suffice? TIA.

Thanks for your input. I had a word with AASI. We currently dropped the plans of taking an IDP as most of our planning involved public transport. The cost of taking membership for IDP did not look enticing.
I'll probably go that way the next time where more plan involves renting a car.

I also enquired at both Mangalore and Coimbatore RTO and they clearly told they issue only a paper.

I have also filed an RTI just to see how that goes . Will keep this forum updated

I got my IDP booklet yesterday. It's valid for one year and permits you to drive in any country that signed at the International Convention of Road Traffic, September 1949. The countries where you're not permitted to drive with this IDP are mentioned in the booklet. It has all your DL details and is essentially a document that 'certifies' the validity of your Indian DL in any of the permitted countries.

The process was extremely straightforward and 100% done on the Parivahan website. Took 5 days (which included the weekend) from application to delivery.

Hi,

You can go to sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and choose Maharashtra as your state. It'll then show you services to choose from - look for 'apply for international drivers permit'. From there, you just need to provide the information that you're asked for.

It'll ask you for your DL, visa and passport details. The documents you need to upload are a copy of your DL, your address proof (Aadhaar) and your passport (with both front and back sides). That's pretty much it. The fees is INR 1030 and the IDP will be issued for one year.

Did you have to also visit the RTO to physically submit the documents?
I had to do this at the Mumbai RTO despite having submitted the documents and making payment online as well for renewal of my DL.

I didn't have to visit the RTO. They just asked me to re-upload my passport (I had only uploaded one side) and my DL (I had uploaded my virtual DL from mParivahan instead of a photo/scan of the physical one - major system flaw, we'll leave it for another day).

Is it possible that you have an older, non 'smart', DL? They might make you visit the RTO in such cases.

Indian license is valid in UK / Ireland as far as it is in English.

Are you sure? I'm British, used to have (it's not valid of one is no longer resident) a British driving licence, but always took an IDP when visiting. I haven't hired a car over those years, and hey, I don't think they check the address, but it is better to have too much than too little.
