Re: The International Driving License (IDL) / International Driving Permit (IDP) Thread

Has anyone got their IDP from https://internationaldriversassociation.com/pricing/?

If yes, is physical copy required? Or is it okay to opt for only digital copy?

Re: The International Driving License (IDL) / International Driving Permit (IDP) Thread

Long post elert.....

I just got my IDP done without any agents or middle man or bribe to any RTO person.

The process is pretty much straight forward and simple now, my application was submitted to KA05 RTO through parivahan portal.

Let me explain you the process in detail.

Before you continue,

Ensure your DL digitised, if you have an old DL then do not read this post, visit your RTO to proceed.

Ensure your digitised DL is linked to your mobile number, if not again do not read this post as without mobile number linking to your DL you would not be able to apply for IDP online. (BTW there is a different set of online application which you need to submit first to link your mobile number to your DL)

If both the above mentioned criterias are met then proceed by reading my post,

First keep soft copy of your passport and DL in jpeg format. Aadhaar copy or linking to DL is not mandatory as of now.

Visit the parivahan portal and fill the IDP request form, the portal would ask for your DL number/DOB and verify it by sending an OTP to your registered mobile number, once done you will have to select the country you are planing to visit (but country is not mentioned on IDP, not sure why they ask that), key in the postal pin code mentioned in DL, it will automatically select the RTO where the application will be submitted, fill a self declaration medical form, fill few more basic details and submit the application, (make a note of the application number) once done it will prompt you to pay the IDP fees of Rs. 1000, the page will redirect you to a very basic payment gateway, select SBI or ICICI as the payment gateway partner (I selected ICICI) and do the payment using UPI/CC/DC/internet banking, I paid through ICICI CC to avoid any payment failures. Also once you go to the payment gateway page it would warn you that the payment made cannot be reversed or refunded and we should contact the concerned RTO for any payment related issues. I took the risk and continued

Once the payment is successful the portal will auto generate 4 forms, CMV form 1, form 4-A, application reference slip and form 1-A. To get these forms you will have to visit the application status link on the parivahan portal, enter the application number/DOB to download these forms. Take a color print (forms would have your photo) of all these forms for your reference.

Form 1-A is medical fitness certificate, this should be signed and sealed by a state govt registered medical practitioner.

Took all the print outs, went to a govt hospital near my house, spoke to an attender there and gave him only form -1A, told him that this to renew my DL (form 1-A is common for DL renewal after 40 years of age and IDP) I was sure that if I show him all the forms or tell him it's for IDP he would take more bribe. He said he will get it done for Rs. 150 (100 for the doctor and 50 for him) and I can come the next day to collect it. I said I wanted it now, gave him Rs. 100, told him to keep it and requested him to get it done now. He immediately agreed and told me to wait for 10 mins, there was a long queue of patients waiting for the doctor. I waited for 15 mins, then he came smiling with the doctors seal and sign. Paid him another Rs. 200, thanked him and left, after all he saved me one day and one more visit to the hospital.

Back to the process,

Now keep the scanned copy of form 1-A/ passport/ DL (all in jpeg format) ready, visit the application status page in parivahan portal, key in the application number/DOB and go to the documents upload section, here upload all the relevant documents, click on submit. Now the application would be submitting to the relevant RTO for scrutiny of the documents, I did this on 23-06-2024.

After this I was checking the application status daily and waited patiently till 03-07-2024, there was no change in the application status, thought this will not move till I visited the RTO, planned to visit them on 06-07-2024, but thought why not call the RTO and check the status, checked Karnataka RTO website and found few landline and mobile numbers against all KA RTO's, made a note of all KA05 RTO numbers and started calling the landline numbers but as expected the calls went unanswered, called the mobile number and surprisingly one person answered the call and said he was the RTO for KA05, was really surprised that RTO's number is listed in the portal and to add to it he answered the call, this was on 04-07-2024 at around 3:30PM, he politely asked me what was my concern, explained him, he politely requested me to call me the next day morning and said he was out from his office and in a meeting with transport department. I thanked him and informed him that I will call back the next day.

On 05-07-2024 at 11AM called him, he promptly answered my call, informed him that I called him to ask my application status and I had called him yesterday for which he apologised stating he was in a meeting and could not check anything, I thanked him again, he asked for the application number, gave him the details, he apologised again for the delay as it had been more than 10 days that I had submitted the application, he promised that it would be processed with EOD. To my surprise within the next 10 mins got a message from parivahan that my IDP is approved and is ready for printing, I was like wow... has RTO really become so much efficient? To add to this I got a call at 12PM from his assistant stating my application is approved and I can download the IDP from parivahan portal, I was like really you called me to tell that !!!!. He said, sir parivahan is a Central govt portal and all applications are monitored, if the applicant files a grievance and if the applicant had submitted all the relavent documents and the fee is paid then the concern RTO should give a valid justification for the delay. I don't know how true this is, but yes I was really impressed that a govt office that too the most corrupt RTO earlier where things would not move without bribe or middle man has become so much efficient, hats off to central govt (not politically biased, but yes things have changed in KA05 RTO compared to what I had seen few years back).

So finally, I have my IDP now, also kindly note there is no more book kind of IDP, it's a single pager permit with 1 year validity. Really happy with the way RTO works, it's become like a Pvt organisation....

Let me know if you guys have any questions, more than happy to help.

Vijay

Why don’t you contact an agent and get it done ? One can go directly but be ready to face obstacles such as this and jump through hoops !

It means that your DL is not digitized and RTO officer has to update it in the system for you to be able to use online features. You can visit RTO or take help from an agent.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply , but i found out my issue. Thankfully it was related to the RTO office. There was only 1 RTO office which was providing the services of IDP in Delhi, RTO Office Sarai Kale Khan. Other than this one, at all the other RTO offices ,i was getting the same error of "clear the DL backlog".

Best,
Arnav

Don't think Japanese translation will be there, since the format from KL RTO is a common one across any country you apply for.

I recently applied for an IDP for Austria at a KL RTO, and this time, it's a different permit. It's an eight-page document with German translations.

Also, in the case of Austria, the official website clearly says a driving license with German translation is required.

Please note: If the foreign driving licence is not written in German, it is only valid in combination with an international driving licence or a translation.
I don't have a clear copy of my IDP yet as it's been delivered to my hometown, but here's a low-quality photo.

Agree, my IDP also is in a booklet now with multiple each page having different languages. This was received last month.
When my brother got IDP last year, it was just a single page book with writing only in English. Both IDP from KL.

My KA-issued IDP is in that sad single page format. Let me try and access it again to see if KA has formatted the information into the multi-page booklet format.

This is very informative. Thank you. Recently, I also applied for an IDP and was surprised to know that I will not be issues a card, but I can print it out.
I have applied it in Bangalore Yelahanka RTO. The most recent update was two days back that my application is approved. I had visited the RTO and the person in charge informed me that my IDP will be ready for download in 7 days. When I try to track my application, I get an error that it no longer exists. However, I have a SAKALA number which I got via SMS. I can track the application there. Can you please give more info on the SAKALA number and more importantly which website you downloaded your IDP from?

RTO does not issue IDP cards, you have to take print out from the parivahan portal under driving license -> IDP print license.

In this page just type in your application number, DOB and Captcha.

I dont think sakala number is required, I used to track using the applciation number.

Hello,
I am travelling to Japan mid October and in the process to apply for IDP.
Is it mandatory for the DL address and Passport address to match ?
My RTO is Mangalore , and passport in Coimbatore. I was planning to apply IDP in Mangalore. My old passport is having the Mangalore address . Any leads on this would be appreciated.
Thank You

Our RTOs (at least the ones in Bangalore) just provide the printed paper for IDP. They do not provide the booklet. I called Toyota Rental and they clearly said that if I do not have the booklet with the required format, then they will not provide a car. And RTO folks have clearly said that they do not provide a booklet.
Hi, Any further updates Reg the single pager vs booklet? I am also looking for an IDP to travel to Japan

If I further look at the link you had posted, the single sheeter attached by others members also follow the same format . Format attached from the website :

Thanks

Hi aeeshaan007, we visited Japan in June, 2024. We got the booklet IDP provided by Automobile Association of Southern India (AASI). I rented the car twice there, both from Toyota Car Rental. They were very specific about the IDP and checked it very meticulously. If I did not have the booklet, then they had made it very clear that they will not be able to rent the car to me.

I am not sure how the single page IDP looks currently, but the one I got a few years back was just a single page in English. That one would definitely not work in Japan.
