I stayed here last year. Excellent location and service. Food is on order and mainly south indian. Around 20kms from town, on the way to top station.
Can take either room or cottage as per occupancy.

I had read somewhere that there are no proper roads leading into this resort. Is that so ? Could you share the prices please ?

For any resort or homestay, please plan to reach there (final destination) before sun goes down. With rain and fog it would difficult to drive in fading light.

For that better to start as early as possible. (5AM would be a good time to be at Silkboard at least).

Wouldn't 7AM be good enough ? I thought it was only an 8 hour drive.

I think 7 would be late. Even driving at twilight with rain and fog would not be good.
If your resort is in Chinnakanal, then you save 22km (1 hour).

2-3 hours for Salem, (200)
1-1.5 Perundurai, (80

1.5-2 hours up to Udumalpet (70)

So its about 480km to Munnar plus distance to the resort if far away (this has to be covered in the light). So its about 10 hours (this is without any breaks). Add about 1-2 hours for food, you are almost talking about fag hours of evening, if you start by 6.

Hence good to start as early as 5. So in that case you are in time for BF at Salem. If you are OK to splurge, GRT; right on the highway is the perfect place (but splurge is what you do with about 300 per person!)


Now if you are going via Theni, the calculation almost remains the same.

2-3 hours to salem (200km)
2 hours to Dindigul (180)
1.5 hours to Theni (80)
3 hours (max) to Munnar (Some one can correct me here) (80)

So you see either way its good first stop at Salem. If you start early say 4 or 5, you can have BF and also exit the Salem city, before it wakes up (though bypasses are in place and its not a problem to cross the city).

Had visited Munnar/ Kumarakom in April 2011 and stayed at Tea County, Munnar. It was recommended by colleagues in office and also by travel agents. Its owned by KTDC, so service is just about OK. View and location is good. I guess you have your own transport, because it is 1 Km from the town centre.

Yes its a "kuchcha" road (around 5km); they will take you in their own jeep. If you are in SUV, you will love the "off roading" to the resort.

If by car, their is a facility to park it safely at top station.

For staying options, it depends on your preference. If you like go around the town, then staying in town or close by will be time saving. Even 20Km or 30Km away from town may take 1 hour to reach town, depending on traffic, rain & fog.

Are Houseboats available in Munnar as well ? or is it only in allepey .

Its Allepey or Kumarakom. Trying to finish two things at a single place?

If you want to splurge, quite many 5 star properties are running Monsoon offers.

No SUV, it ll either be an Ikon or a Spark. I didn't quite get the second part. Does it mean, we would have to park our vehicles 5km away and get to their resort by their jeep ?

5 star, not really. May be next year, when i wont be single any more But for now would like to keep it down to a budget.

Hey Karty, Take a look at this place. Looks fantastic. Awesome location and nice huts. They are also reasonable. Not exactly in Munnar, but you can always drive around from there. Chanced upon this. Not tested. If you decide to go, let us know your experience

I had stayed at Clouds Valley in May end this year. It was really good and very close to the town near the KSRTC Bus stand Munnar Sports council gound. Off season tariff may be in the range you are looking for. Food was good at their restaurant.
You can also try Abad Castle, Chancellor Resorts/Ayur County (both in same campus, tariffs are different) - these were other places that were recommended to me by other members here but they were fully booked at that time. Off season tariffs in these places should also be in your budget. KTDC Tea County is also good but i'm not sure if their tariffs will fall in your budget, nothing wrong in checking with them though. A simple search on the net should get you websites/contact information for these resorts/hotels and you can get the tariffs (most should have off season discounts now).
Also, earlier you start from Bangalore the better (between 5-6am is ideal), especially on weekends/holidays.
