Nigel,I saw a post earlier from DB saying that there are no trucks on nh4a on sundays, but even otherwise,as long as the road condition stays good, the trucks really dont create much of a problem, problems begin when the road goes bad and then you have to face the trucks, thats when its really bad,

Thanks DB. I will take the advice and stick to NH4A. Any suggestions for decent restaurants on NH4A between Belgaum and Madgaon. Thanks for the offer to contact via PM. At this moment am unable to do it since I am a newbie and don't have PM facility.

I drove once on a Sunday (27 Feb) and saw maybe a dozen mining trucks along the entire route. On weekdays, I've seen lines of trucks up to about 3 km long between Mollem and Tisk. As I've already said, you're allowed to move up on the wrong side of the highway and either tuck your car in between two trucks (they do leave some gaps) or go off the road on the right, whenever there's approaching traffic.

There are a couple of restaurants (haven't tried them) near where you leave Khanapur. There may be something at Tisk, I take the bypass and haven't really seen the town. Then there's the Dudhsagar Resort just before Mollem, on the left.

Mollem may also have some eateries and the food would probably be nice, but I don't think you'll find a restaurant with ambience. Ponda is a larger city and will have very decent restaurants

Just remember that in Goa, restaurants close by 3 pm (and reopen at 7).

At Madgaon, after you pass the stadium and take a right at the next circle (T-junction), you'll pass a Domino's on your right. They're open all day.

Ranjit DB thanks for the replies. Yep I noticed the earlier post about sundays having no mining trucks later after I posted. I plan on taking the bus tomorrow to Goa and then back in a friends H City on Sunday. Hopefully the roads are good.
Regards

There is a check post near Anmod on NH4A and the checking is usually pretty intense, though private cars are generally not stopped unless its a only boy gang travelling inside the car which is a sure invitation for frisking!

re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

I've driven across the Goa-Maharashtra border at Patradevi and the Goa-Karnataka border at Anmod and Karwar more times than I can count, and never once been stopped. Of course, that doesn't mean it can't happen, just that the chances are low.

The border is just before the junction of NH4A and the shortcut to Khanapur, at Anmod. There's a speedbreaker and a drop-gate, which is usually set high enough for a car to pass under. If it isn't, just halt the vehicle and the attendant will come out and raise it a few inches.

Maybe thats because you were driving a "GA" registration, or Am I wrong here.

+1 to that.

GA vehicles don't get frisked.

All others mostly will unless they have made enough for the day.

Its risky carrying anything as they will try to make a quick buck anyways, will use delaying tactics to wear out any confrontation.

I drive a KA vehicle but speak Konkani fluently and mostly they let me pass without any checks.

Have never been checked while driving a GA vehicle.

Oh this is the a Goa check post? I was worried about Karnataka Excise Check Post. When going past Insuli I've only been caught once in all these years. Bombay license but permit said Daman . Maybe I will just play Lorna's Songs full blast.

The majority of the crossings were in a vehicle with MH plates.

re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Had a quick weekend break in Candolim and Panjim. Drove back via Amboli AJara Uttur and the Kaveri/Satyapalace intersection. The road from Ajra to uttur is horrible. I'm sure I should have gone via gadinglaj, if better as it usually is the tires, Suspension would have appreciated. Would have cut travel time by about three quarters of an hour too. Oh and there was heavy checking at the Insuli check post both vehicles checked were GA Numbers. I was lucky that I wasn't stopped I guess .. I always look the other way. db I sent you a sms saturday night.
So end result is avaoind Uttur. the top layer of tar hasn't been put and the road is still narrow. However there is evedence of widening work in progress.
Cheers

Didn't receive it, sorry. Mobile coverage has been spotty for the last few days, with calls getting dropped in under a minute, so it may be because of network problems.
