Hi, am planning to do Pune-Nagar-Aurangabad for a long weekend coming up soon. Anything specific to look out for?
^^Good 4 lane roads all the way. The best time to do this is early mornings or after 8-00pm to avoid miscellaneous traffic and the pain of passing Ahmednagar town during the day.
One would usually end up wasting a lot of time while exiting Pune (all the way till Ranjangaon) and passing Ahmednagar during the day, especially on weekends/Holidays.
Though a 4 lane road, there are too many breaks in the medians (unlike a typical NH, this being SH) and it is always safer (as always) to stick to the left lane have enough reaction time for the morons trying to join the highway from the opposite side.
Early morning or late night drive on this route is a mere 3/3.5 hour affair.
Thanks parag. Was planning to leave around 7 am or later but your advice is sound- will try making that 5.30 or 6! I am leaving from West Pune, what is the best route to hit Nagar road?

From my knowledge of Pune roads, from west Pune the best way to hit Nagar road is the below 2 options:
1. Swargate-Sholapur Road-Kharadi Bypass-Nagar Road
2. Swargate-Camp-Koregaon Park-Nagar Road
I usually drove from Sinhaghad Road to Aurangabad and preferred the first option as I would hit Nagar road at a point from where there are no signals all the way and highway traffic would start.

If you leave Pune at 5:30 a.m. you should be able to reach Aurangabad by 8:30 a.m. very comfortably.
- 5:30 to 6:00 to get to Nagar Road and cross Viman Nagar
- 6:00 to 7:15 Ahamadnagar (there is only one toll booth now which is after Ranjangaon)
- 7:15 to 8:30 Aurangabad
If you are staying around Aundh, Wakad, Baner etc. the best route to get to the Nagar road would be:
- Wakad/Aundh->Bremen Chowk->Aundh Road->Khadki Station->Wakadewadi->Sangamwadi Road (new bridge and road after Shopper's stop)->Yerawada->Nagar Road
- Baner->University Circle->Sancheti->COEP Junction after the railway bridge TL->TR onto Sangamwadi Bridge (before Shopper's stop)->Yerawada->Nagar Road
At 5:30/6:00 a.m. you will not find any traffic on this road.
If you are coming from the Swargate side what Parag suggested may be the better options.
THanks guys! Yup, I know that new road- had taken it once to go to the airport.
As on ~10 days back, roads are excellent, traffic till first 20kms after Pune and Ahmednagar will take approx. 15-20 mins to cross, depending on the time of day.
You can start at 7am too, and will be in Ahmednagar by 8.45-9am comfortably, from there on roads are more or less the same in terms of traffic, but 2 whlrs will give you company for most of the route and the occassional truck/tempo on the wrong side. There is toll before and after Ahmednagar.
Once you cross Ahmednagar, you`ll find one ghat section, on the RHS theres one Cafe Coffee day, also SmileStone on LHS before Ahmednagar.
Before Ahmednagar some road repairing work was going on, so one way was closed (RHS lane toward Ahmednagar), approx. 2kms. Road signs were not clearly marked, thats it.
Do update on the Aurangabad weather once you are back and road conditions, planning to go within the next few weeks.
Hi,
I am planning to drive from Pune to Ajanta in May. I have heard that the roads are not in very good condition from Nagar. Is it true. I am concerned because I am planning to drive from Bangalore to Pune, and from Pune to Ajanta, and then back to Bangalore, so would like to be careful. Will appreciate any help.
Thanks
Not true at all @krivbel. Please refer my post and the replies just above yours. Should be fine because we've not had any rains in the month or so since then.
Guys I am planning a trip to a trip to Aurangabad. Can anyone tell the road conditions for via Nasik route or any other better route. We plan to drive on 5th Nov. Weekend.

Last month, the Yeola-Vaijapur-Aurangabad road was in very bad shape.
Approaching Nashik, roads are being widened resulting in traffic jams during day hours.
Nevertheless, the Nashik route remains the best option for you.
Back from the road trip to Aurangabad. Route taken for onward journey was Thane- Igatpuri - Nashik - Sinnar - Aurangabad. The Raod conditions from Sinnar to Vajipur was really bad. For a strech of 7 km there was actually no road. Route I took for return journey was Aurangabad - Ahmednagar - Pune (bypass via Chakan Talegaon) - Expressway - Thane. This was amazing road. I would suggest this route to anyone traveling from Mumbai towards Aurangabad.

Took me about 6 hours with this route. The only bottleneck you will get is Chakan. Rest all is good smooth drive.

arishi1, can you give some more info
1. is this mostly (upto pune) 4 lane NH?
2. how speedly you could go on average on the stretch of Aurangabad - Ahmednagar - Pune (bypass via Chakan Talegaon)?
3. what time did you travel and how was the traffic condition?
I was also planning to do the route very soon leaving at 7am from Mumbai. 6hrs would be quite a lot for me as I need to reach earlier, if that is what it will take.
