Hyderabad to Udupi (best and alternate route)

Hi,
I am planning a drive from Hyderabad to Udupi mid-Septemeber with my wife and 2 year+ old son. The vehicle will be Scorpio.

Can you please help me on the following:
1. The best route from Hyderabad to Udipi.
2. The alternate route from Hyderabad to Udipi (so that I can come back in a different route).

My primary requirement is good road condition and even though I need to travel few kms extra for the same, I am ok.

thanks a lot,
Prabin.

Keeping current road conditions in mind, the best route would be as follows:

Hyderabad-NH7-Kurnool-Gooty-Anantapur-Penukonda
Turn off NH7 at Penukonda
Penukonda-Pavagada-Challakere-Chitradurga
Take NH13 from Chitradurga
Chitradurga-Hollalkere-Channagiri-Shioga-Tirthahalli-Karkala-Udupi

Alternative routes via Gooty, Bellary, Hospet, Hubli are in terrible shape now.
NH17 is avoidable, road is in very bad shape in several places.

Other alternatives are to come up via Karakala, Kudremukh/Charmadi to Chickmagalur, Hassan, Channarayapatna, Kibbenahalli, umkur, Dodballapur, and resume on Nh7 via Bagepalli and Penukonda.

My friend is planning to travel from Hyderabad to Udupi in his car (Elite i20) along with his family (includes his parents, spouse and their 4-year old kid) at the end of this month. The plan is certain.

So, he had put down the below 2 routes based on Google maps.

1. via NH7 i.e Kurnool-Anantapur-Challakere-Chitradurga-Shimoga
The stretch till Anantapur looks good. How is the road condition from Anantapur till Udupi?

https://goo.gl/maps/gBTV8Mh2ZZw

2. Via Shimoga-Harihar-Hospet

https://goo.gl/maps/14cujuuNAQx

Which one of the above would be the better one considering the current road and weather conditions? Or is there any other alternative route? It would greatly help him plan better.

I also need to mention that they will not be in a hurry to reach their destination since this would be their first long journey in their own vehicle. Hence additional details on places to take breaks from the journey (incl. lunch etc.) are also appreciated. They would also be okay for an as early start as possible from Hyderabad.

Thanks.

As per me the best option is :

Hyderabad-Raichur-Hampi-Hospet-Chitradurga-Shimoga-Thirthahalli-Agumbe-Someshwar-Udupi.

You have two good places to take a break in between. (By break, I mean if you want to break your journey in between)

- Hospet (Malligi, Royal Orchid)
- Shimoga (Jewel Rock, Royal Orchid)

Shimoga would be an ideal break if you can make it.

If not in a hurry,go via Bangalore, more kilometers, but facilities and road conditions are excellent via NH7-NH48 and considering its their first long drive. They could even consider taking a break at bangalore and continuing. The other roads are all in not so great shape.

Re: Hyderabad to Udupi (best and alternate route)

Did the following route early May 2017:
Hyderabad - Penukonda - Pavagada - Challakere - Chitradurga - Channagiri - Shivamogga - Thirthahalli - Agumbe - Udupi
Total driving time: 14.5 hours. Total distance: 840kms.
Road: Good surfaces all along except about 30-40 kms before and after Shivamogga. Penukonda to Roddam is good surface and hardly any traffic, but very narrow (not enough for even 2 vehicles to pass).

While coming back a week later, in order to avoid Sivamogga, we did Google Maps recommended route of Thirthahalli - Honnalli - Harihar - Davanagere - Chitradurga. Immediate regrets not heeding Google Maps' advice earlier Roads were excellent throughout, and even though this added about 25-30 kms overall, the journey was faster by about 30 mins.

Main considerations in deciding the route was to maximise distance on the Hyderabad-Bangalore expressway (by getting off the expressway at Penukonda which is 440 kms from Hyderabad). Even though this added about 95 kms and Rs 550/- total toll compared to getting off the expressway at Jadcherla (about 57 kms from Hyderabad), we felt it was worth it, and we saved about an hour travel time overall too! Both ways, we started around 5am and were at destination around 8:30pm.
