re: Bangalore - Shimoga : Route Queries

Hi All,

I will be travelling to Jog this weekend.

The route planned is Bangalore > Tumkur > Tiptur > Arsikere > Tarikere > Shimoga > Sagar > Jog

I am planning to start at 5:30 AM. Need some pointers for the deviation at Tumkur towards NH 206 and the available breakfast/lunch options in this route.

Any other places around Jog/Sagar/Shimoga that can be visited?

Immediately after the Tumkur toll, you would see a flyover and a board marked Shimoga on the left. Dont take the flyover. Go below from the left. That should lead you to the Tumkur bypass.

Not many places to eat on this road. Around Arsikere there is a CCD. In the towns there may be local hotels. But thats it.

Thanks ampere. I will look out for the flyover.

I was thinking of stopping at Tiptur for breakfast and lunch at Shimoga/Sagar.

Since your are starting by 5 AM, I suggest you go inside Tumkur, you will encounter very less traffic. Avoid bypass road. It is in very bad condition.

For breakfast, you can stop near KB Cross (another 1 hour from Tumkur), its on the right side. Food is better than any hotel in Tiptur.

If you are starting Bangalore little early, say 4.30AM, then you can have breakfast at Vinayaka Caffe Kadur (3 hr 30 mins drive from Bangalore), you will get mouth watering Masala Dosa . You can also visit Preeti Canteen Birur, another 15 mins from here. But since this is Ganesha Festival time, they might be closed on 29th.

Regarding places , you can visit Tyavarekoppa Tiger Safari, 10 kms after Shimoga on the way to Sagar. Near to Sagar, you can visit Keladi/Ikkeri/Sigandur. But expect heavy crowd because of long weekend.

By the way my native is Sagar, and I'm going on 28th , I'l start after 3:30 PM, I will have evening tea/snacks @ Vinayaka Cafe

If I enter Tumkur, is there a landmark or board that indicates the deviation towards Tiptur?

Have you considered taking BLR Chitradurga Shimoga Sagar Route. this was suggested by Santosh earlier. And as Ampere had suggested, there is a Kamath just before Sira for breakfast Option. I am driving down to Sirsi this weekend and planning to take this route

NH 206 can be accessed via the Tumkur bypass. Look for Shimoga signage immediately after toll, the road is broken at some places but manageable.
This will directly lead to NH 206 a few Km later.
If you take this route, you can stop at Matha sagar at Kibbanahalli cross (just a few Km before Tiptur).
At Tiptur there is a local Kamat (not the larger Kamat brand that we all know).
And CCD at Arsikere.

Alternate is to take NH 4 all the way to Chitradurga and then go to Shimoga. Time wise both will be almost similar.
You can try one route for onward and other for return journey.

Visiting Sigandur is a very bad option during the weekends especially while crossing ferry at Holebaagilu. The other places which can be visited are Keladi, Ikkeri, Varada moola and Guduvi Bird Sanctuary. Guduvi can be kept as optional as it takes almost a complete day also you wont get any food near by.

You can find one inside Sagar Town HP petrol bunk on the BH road. Its about 100 Mts from LIC india Building.

Do not fill petrol or diesel on any other bunks in Sagar. Also there is one Indian Oil Petrol Bunk in Shimoga next to BSNL Bhavan on BH Road which has to be avoided. Couple of months back I filled Diesel from that bunk and had to spend almost 1500 bucks from my pocket beacuse of adultrated Diesel which caused huge amount of smoke and blockage in the housepipe.

re: Bangalore - Shimoga : Route Queries

Just back from a trip to Sirsi - Jog and Shimoga. Took the Blr-chitradurga-chennagiri-shimoga-sagar-sirsi road. Route is mostly good. Between Chitradurga and Chennagiri, roads are worn out in some places, but dont really fall into the category of bad roads. On return, my GPS set me off to Bhadravathi from Shimoga. Bhadravathi to Chennagiri is a painful drive with countless speak breakers. I believe this would have costed me atleast half an hour. The route is scenic though.

re: Bangalore - Shimoga : Route Queries

Back from long weekend trip to Jog falls - Thirthahalli - Agumbe trip.
Started from Silkboard around 04.30 AM on Friday and reached Jog falls around 11.30 AM after taking Tumkur - Tiptur - Ariskere - Bhadravati - Shimoga - Sagar - Jog route. Roads were good all around apart from couple of patches one near Kadur and another near Jog.

Stopped for breakfast at Vinayaka Cafe near Kadur based on suggestion from TBHP. This is a small hotel, the best landmark for the same is to watch out for big line of parked cars. Food was great and cheap.
Also as mentioned earlier there are two CCD's located before and after Arsikere, there are lots of signage's for same is difficult to miss.

Took Jog- Sagar- Anandapuram - Ripponpet - Thirthahalli route for Thirthahalli. Again roads are in good conditions all around, and traffic minimal.

The same goes for road conditions around Agumbe.

For return took Thirthahalli - Shimoga - Channagiri - Chitradurga route. Road conditions between Shimoga and Channagiri is patchy at someplaces. Was of an impression that Shimoga - Bhadravati - Channagiri route till I read post by Lightning-Fast above mentioning that route is also not great.

Thanks, glad to hear that the roads are good. I am planning a trip to kollur this weekend with my city and was worried about the road conditions. Are the bad patches really bad or motorable for a low slung car? Also, did you go into Tumkur down or took the bypass? Someone said the bypass is bad. Also, how long did it take for you to get to Shimoga?

I had been to jog as well last weekend. Went to M'lore from there.

B'lore - Tumkur - Tiptur - Arsikere - Shimoga - Sagar - Jog - Sagar - Ripponpete - Thirthahalli - Agumbe - Hebri - Udupi - M'lore. Returned to B'lore via charmadi.

Roads were good throughout the journey except for a small section after Birur railway crossing.

I started at 5:30 and therefore went inside Tumkur instead of the bypass after hearing about its bad condition. Reached Shimoga by 11.
