I planned to drive down kerala on next week. My planned route is via krishnaagiri, salem, avanashi, coimbatore, palakkad to kottayam. Can anyone tell me the condition of the NH-47 road. Six months back i had a bad experience as roads were pot holes/under construction. If you travelled recently please update.
Mapmyindia online maps surprisingly shows a diversion at NH-47 from avanashi. the suggested route is
Avanashi at 69.0 Km
Mangalam at 81.4 Km
Palladam at 92.8 Km
Semmipalayam at 100.3 Km
Kangayampalayam at 109.5 Km
Sulur at 112.3 Km
Kannampalayam at 113.0 Km
Irugur at 116.7 Km
Then it joins back to NH-47 again. Can anyone tell me the logic behind route diversion from NH-47 which increase almost 18 KM. Is there any problem with NH7 from avanashi to coimbatore?
Is it necessary for you to touch Salem? if yes, then pls follow the NH47 to Coimbatore otherwise choose the following route:
Blr - Hosur - Krishnagiri - Dharmapuri - THoppur - Mettur - Ammapet - Annur - Coimbatore
read the following thread for more details:

Abhi
The route from Krishnagiri right uptil Coimbatore is being 4 laned. Salem to Coimbatore has the highest density of traffic in this route and with the 4 laning happening it is highly irritating and time consuming to say the least.
Either Akroy's route or Hosur - Rayakottai - Palakode - Thoppur - Mechari - Mettur - Ammapet - Athani - Sathy - Cbe would work fine. If you are not comfortable with the route you could take Mettur - Bhavani - Perundurai - Avinashi - Coimbatore but please be advised that the route from Bhavani to Coimbatore is being 4 laned.

I do the Cbe-Blr frequently - and have done all these routes more than half a dozen times each.
I can tell you that I have gone BACK to the Bhavani - Mettur - Thoppur- Hosur-Blr Route. That by far is THE best and the fastest!
However if you would like a faster route then you could try the Hosur > Salem> Karur > Dindigul > Vatalkundu > Cumbum > Kumili > Kottayam as well.
Believe me you will LOVE the drive - excellent roads with a LOT lesser traffic, and picture post card scenery!
Thanks to all of you for your time and valuable suggestions. I have decided to take following route
Blr->hosur-> krishnagiri-> thoppur-> mettur->bhavani-> coimbatore->palakkad-stop over at perumbavoor
Once i am back from the trip i update you all with present condition and my experience.
Kind regards
svk

Just back from a to and fro trip to Kerala by this route, i can vouch that this route is excellent.
With 4 laning complete till Dindigul, you should be able to do really good speeds, BUT watch out for 2 wheelers, and trucks which come up on the wrong side of the road, on the FAST lane!
Once you near Dindigul, look out for a newly constructed flyover which bypasses the town. DO NOT get on this, instead take the road towards the right which goes towards Theni. I made this mistake and realized my folly only about 10 kms later, so wasted 20 kms in the process.
Once past this, look out for people who cross the roads with gay abandon near the villages you cross.
Truly superb scenery makes you fall in love with this route.
Thanks for the suggestion. have you looked at the customized google route map which i posted? is that ok
@benbsb29 - I also did this same route between Sept 18 - 21. Brilliant roads. I also made the same mistake of going past the Dindigul junction.
@wildon - The google map directions are correct. The main thing is to get down the ramp where the marker points to Palani-Kodaikanal at the Dindigul bypass. On the service road, you will see Palani right turn first. Cross that and continue on the service road. Next right (below the NH7 highway) will be marked towards Kodai. Take and enjoy super-scenic drive.
Thanks for your suggestions benbsb29 & ssriram75

Look for this sign board when you are near the Dindigul and take this left. They are expected to make one more turn-off next to this - looks like construction is still in progress for that.
Hope this helps

I am intending to take this route while travelling to thiruvalla, two weeks from now. Couldnt help notice that there is a bypass around Dindigul which 'per map' avoids going into the town area. Is the sign board in the bypass road or do we continue on NH7 till we touch the NH45?.
My map
Any suggestions are welcome.
-Thanks

I've hit a similar confusion this time. I drive to Pala (Kottayam) from Bangalore every 2 months.
I usually take the Bangalore-Salem-Coimbatore-Trichur-Angamaly-Muvattupuzha-Erattupetta (My home town) where I reach in around 8.5-9 hours.
This time I would like to try out the Alternate route discussed here which is:
Bangalore-Salem-Namkkal-Karur-Dindigul-Theni-Kambam-Gudalur-Kuttikanam-Kanjirapally-Erattupetta
Friends, please please suggest:
1. whether this is a better option
2. Condition of Roads
3. Time taken
please:
Guys, i am planning a trip to Kottayam next month.
How long is the drive from Bangalore to Kottayam (time as well as kms)? Are the roads any good?
