Also guys please suggest if i have to take the same route mentioned above or do i have to take any other route (shorter and better) for my return journey to Bangalore from Velankani.

Trichy-Tanjore: 4L NH67
Tanjore-Thiruvarur-Nagapattanam: Not sure of the current status. But decent roads.
Others can confirm.

ECR is always good.

Sorry I did not make that clear.
I meant that last stretch from Nagapattinam to Velankanni.
You would be covering that through the ECR (East Coast Road).

Cool. I have pretty much decided to take the following route for my onward and return journey.

Bangalore - Krishnagiri - Dharmapuri - Salem - Namakkal - Musri - Trichy - Tanjore - Nagapattinam - Velankani.

Will keep you guys posted on the road conditions on all the stretches once i am back from the trip.

On 19 August 2011, I drove in my Linea on this stretch: Velankanni>Sikkal>Thiruvarur [NH 67]>Thanjavur enroute to Pillayarpatti. The 2-laned and twisty roads were fine. The 4-laned Thanjavur bypass was superb!

Thanks Ravi for that update. I vaguely remember the wide road at Tanjore bypass.
Though I was not sure about the 4L part. Any signs of 4L work on the Tanjore-Sikkal section?

No. NH 67 is a decent and twisty 2-laned road between Thanjavur and Sikkal with a couple of railway level crossings thrown in between with driving through some towns like Needamangalam, Poondi with Thiruvarur bypassed.

re: Bangalore to Velankanni : Route Queries

Travelled Bangalore (Yelahanka) - Krishnagiri - Dharmapuri - Salem - Namakkal - Kulitalai - Manaparai - (NH 45)Trichy - Thanjavur - Thiruvarur - Sikkal - Velankani this week.

Total distance is 560 kms. Good roads throughout except for the Thanjavur - Thiruvarur - Sikkal stretch. The roads are not too bad but manageable.

re: Bangalore to Velankanni : Route Queries

I just came back from Velankanni. Below is the current condition.

1) Bangalore to Namakkal - NH 4 Lane road (Good)
2) Namakkal to Trichy - SH (Village Road - OK)
Take the Kulithalai road. Its just OK, but avoid musiri road. Its in pathetic condition, full of pot holes & road work is also in progress.
3) Trichy to Tanjavur - NH 4 Lane road (Good)
4) Tanjavur to Mannargudi - SH ( Village Road - Good)
5) Mannargudi -Thiruthooraipoondi - ECR-Velankanni) - SH (Village Road -Narrow, but good)

Its a little long route, roughly around 490 kms, but a better one compared to the other options.

Hi, When you say its a long route (490 kms), is it one way? Google tells me the distance (BLR to Vellankani) is about 355 kms, hence confused... 490 compared to 355 is too long a route (even if its better road), especially since roads till Namakkal (250 kms) are definitely best you can hope for.

Its definitely not 350 km. Trichy itself is 320.

This is the route under discussion: : Route Link

Why do you have to go to Thiruthuraipoondi? There is a straight road from Tanjore to Nagapattinam and from there Velakanni is just 15 min drive via ECR.

That was exactly my thought too. The 4lane NH 67 continues as a decent two lane. Though I am not sure if any work has started on this stretch.

I traveled during the night time ( around 10pm) & the road to Tanjore wasn't so good (pot Holes). I wasn't even sure about the road condition after tanjore.Hence i took a deviation & followed thiruthuraipoondi route since my friends told me its a OK road.

They were doing the road work in this route, this should be a good road now, but might be a long route

re: Bangalore to Velankanni : Route Queries

Just to update after a recent trip to this part of the country:

Tanjore - Nagapattanam section is all patched up and does not have any pot holes. Road surface is uneven because of the patching work but very comfortable to drive.
