There is a Temple Inn in Tiruvanaikoil on the main Madras-Trichy Trunk Road, its about 100m past the temple turnoff on the main road (when coming from city). Once you get to Chathiram Bus Stand from Karur-Trichy NH67 go towards Tiruvanaikoil-Srirangam (or Madras) direction on Trunk Road. I regularly go here to avoid getting too much into the city.

The other option would be Arya Bhavan or Grand Gardenia. Its some 4-5 km past the Thanjavur exit on NH45 Bypass road on the Dindigul exit very much on the highway. You won't lose much time doing the extra distance since you don't enter town again in this case.

In order to save time of crossing Trichy I am considering taking Nammakal - Kannanur - Mannachanallur route that connects to Trichy - Thanjavur highway. Any surprises / bad road section on this route? Please share your opinion.

- Its the same I think. Because Namakkal is a pain.
- Roads are good all the way.
- Yes you do hit directly toll gate from where you just cross the bridge and get on to the Tanjore road. Route Link

You can also try the Samayapuram road to get to GST at Mannachanallur. (I have not tried that route.


- Many of us here have taken Budhan Santhau/Senthamangalam/Alangayam road to bypass Namakkal. It works very well, but have lots of truck traffic.

Now that the Karur by pass is open to traffic, why consider the Thuraiyur route. My office colleague wet to trichy by the Karur by pass route recently. He said apart from the sand lorry traffic, the roads are broad 2 lane roads.

I expect to save some time since we need not cross Trichy on the way to Velankanni and mainly this route connects to the Thanjavur highway as ampere mentioned. I am still undecided though and may go for Karur bypass as there is less chance of getting lost and loosing time. Thanks for the valuable inputs

Head to Pondicherry and then drive back via Tindivanam/Vandavasi/Cheyyar/Arcot/Krishnagiri. That area (Tanjore/Kumbakonam) abounds in beautiful temple architectures. Temples at Tanjore, Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Chidambaram etc brilliant for their architectures.

Thanks. Plan postponed keeping in mind the current political scenario. Friends and family suggest its not safe to travel in a KA registered car with family. So taking no chances.

I would suggest you to postpone it for few more days. There were posters set up threatening to kill Kannadigas. Tomorrow, the lawyers are going to appeal for bail in the Supreme Court. So there might be disturbances across the state in the days to come. Please wait, watch and decide to go to Velankanni.

This is the better route as against Thanjavur, Mannargudi, Thiruthiraipoondi.
