Also, i heard expressway construction is in progress on the hoskote -chittor- chennai route. Is it a better option than hosur- krishnagiri- vellore route?

You can take either Chitoor or Krishnagiri. Both work well. I prefer Krishnagiri. But since mentioned Whitefield, I suggested Kolar.

Either the route the time you exit the Chennai 4-lane is the same. Its good road all the way from there on.

Team. We did a 3 day drive from Bangalore to Mahabalipuram on 29-Sep-22 . Quick update on the route.

Onward - Bangalore [Malleshwaram] - Kolar - Mulbagal - Chittoor - Ranipet - Kanchipuram - Chengalpettu - Mahabalipuram.

Its good drive till Chittoor, then few kilometers of potholes. Then ok road right upto Ranipet. Enough and more traffic. Kanchipuram and further on, was about 40 kms per hour speed. Some road work going on too.

Return - Mahabalipuram - Chengalpattu - Walajabad - Arakonnam - Sholingnur - Chittoor - Kolar - Bangalore

Thr right turn at Walajabad will help you to prevent the crazy traffic, and bypass Kanchipuram altogether. The interior roads are not two laned, but good condition. I could actually do around 50 / 60 Kms without any traffic at all. Peaceful drive if you like driving in the countryside.

Suggestion if anyone wants to get away from the maddening crowd.

Walajabad - Arakonam, is it via Sunguvarchatram - Thakkolam or is there any other route ?

Its Walajabad - Kattavakam - Thirumalpur - Attur - Arakkonam.

FYI. There is some construction going on in Kanchipuram which impacts traffic.

Visiting Mahabalipuram this weekend and since I stay close to whitefield, will be taking the kolar route. Planning to leave early morning 5:30am. What are the good places to have food enroute and any must visit restaurants in Mahabalipuram?

If you are starting at 5.30, you will be reaching Ranipet or beyond by breakfast time.
1. Amirtham Restaurant @ Ranipet
2. Murugan Idly Shop after ranipet
3. Shri Ramanas @ Kanchipuram bypass
4. Saravana Bhavan @ kanchipuram bypass

The only option prior to Chittoor is Nandi Food Plaza.

All the other options are before the white topped section starts at Nangli toll and will not be open for a 5:30 AM start.

A week ago, I took Kanchi - Walajah - Chengalpet - Tirukazhukundram - Mahabalipuram; good roads, moderate traffic at Chengalpet crossing and rest smooth.

No need for Vandalur. Oragadam-SP Koil-Chengalpattu-Mahabs is a better option. There is one railway crossing at SP Koil, which is a non-issue for the time dass would get there.

Isn't there road widening happening on Walajabad-Chengalpattu section?
