This is NH4 all the way till Hiriyur - fentastic road - quite a few toll boths!

only problem I saw was though the entire road is fenced, there are people crossing the few tractors and bikes...

Yes its doable in a day, will have to leave early though!

Thanks a lot. Plan changed a bit due to some unforeseen circumstances. But will visit the Vani Vilas Sagar dam sometime. Photos and reviews about the place seems to be really good.

Check the Hampi thread as well. Many folks take the same route and divert to Bellary to hit Hampi. You may find updated road conditions.

NH13 is in good condition, but would advice to take the Hubli approach.
Its about 70-80km more. But you get good roads at least till Bijapur.

I don't know how is NH13 beyond Hospet, but till then I am told its decent.

re: Bangalore to Solapur : Route Queries

The road is good only from Bangalore to Chitradurga and Ilkal to Bijapur, the work on stretch between Chitradurga and Ilkal is not completed. It will take atleast 7 hours to reach Hospet because of heavy traffic and frequent diversions whereas Bellary is doeable in 4.5 hours. If you take Hiriyur-Bellary-Sindhanur-Kushtagi route to reach Ilkal you will have to manage the Siruguppa-Sindhanur stretch which is bad otherwise lot better than NH 13. There is not much difference distance wise on both these routes. from Ilkal you can continue via Bijapur to reach Solapur. I had last driven from Bijapur to Bangalore via NH13 in December, 2011, the road from Bijapur upto some 80kms was excellent with road work completed.

re: Bangalore to Solapur : Route Queries

Any update on Road conditions from Chitradurga- Hospet -Bijapur.
Would like to try this route instead of Bangalore-Chitradurg-Hubli-Bijapur as the stretch between Hubli Bijapur is full of speedbreakers and takes nealy about 4.5 to 5 hours to cover 200 kms

There are speed breakers on NH13 between Chitradurga & Hospet too, besides heavy truck traffic. Expect traffic slow down near Hospet. But road north of Hospet is good

re: Bangalore to Solapur : Route Queries

@Fabioaus, I did this route last month.

Please take:
BLR - Chitradurga - Hospet - Bijapur - Solapur

1. BLR-Chitradurga: 4-lane, with tolls.

2. Chitradurga - Hospet:
* 2 lane
* no divider
* lot of truck traffic
* Speedbreakers at all villages etc
* Some bunks available
* No good hotels, but dhaba's that are frequented by trucks.

3. Hospet by-pass, upto itnersection of NH-63 (approx 20 km)
* Road work in progress near intersection of hoset By-pass,
* Expect some jams also
* Road work in progress after this, upto intersection of NH-63 (4-laning)

4. After Hospet / NH-63 intersection, upto Bijapur entrance:
* excellent 4-lane, divided, toll roads
* 4 tolls, total of about 140 Rs
* Bunks in towns along the road
* No good hotels till Bijapur
* Speed breakers at almost all intersections (towns along the road)

5. Bijapur - Solapur:
* it is the old 2-lane "NH"
* lot of truck traffic
* this stretch will be slow. Trucks will go in a convoy, and may be difficult to overtake.
* one toll near SUR.

Good IOC bunk (COCO) on out-skirts of Bijapur, on the by-pass section. This will be on your left when going from BJP to SUR.

Pls dont go thru Bellary.
Bellary - Hospet section is BAD

re: Bangalore to Solapur : Route Queries

Has anybody did Bangalore to Solapur drive in last couple of months or so? If so, what road would you recommend?

A friend of mine is planning to drive from Bangalore to Solapur, with his family. He does not want to do this in one day, but instead have an overnight stop on the way somewhere.

We are considering these two options:

1. Bangalore-Chitradurga-Hospet(NH13)-Bijapur-Solapur. How are these roads now? And where is a good place to stay overnight? Are there are good hotels in Chitradurga for an overnight stay?

2. Bangalore-Hubli-Bijapur-Solapur. This is a bit longer (about 80km longer according to Google maps), but the road till Hubli is very good and fast, and there are hotels in Hubli for overnight stay. Therefore, I am wondering if this will be the better option.

Any tips/recommendations based on recent road conditions will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
-AD

If you are considering overnight stops, then nothing beats Hubli. Though even Hospet has good hotels. If he is OK to add 2 days, then break at Hospet, visit Hampi and drive to Solapur on the third day! Even better ?

re: Bangalore to Solapur : Route Queries

I travelled bangalore-solapur on 30th May and returned after a week via Bangalore-Chitradurga-Hospet-Bijapur-Solapur-Akalkot.

The road updates:

Bangalore Chitradurga travel was effortless. Chitradurg to Hospet road was without divider with lots of truck traffic (not mining). Having left Bangalore in the afternoon at 3, I decided to break at Hospet. Hotel Mallige is the recommended place in tripadvisor as well by others. A nice place with good restaurant.A double AC room is 2200-00+tax. The Hospet Bypass and tunnels are ready and nicely done. The Hospet-Bijapur toll road was the best part of the journey. A beautiful world class 4 lane road. I think done by GMR constructions. One can easily do good speeds. Only few places the speed breakers near villages are to be tackled.

While returning also ended up leaving solapur after 330 pm and came to Hospet by 7:45. Stayed at a newly opened hotel Swathi on station road. AC room at 1200. Its a nicely done hotel on station road. I think if one can leave Bangalore at 6 AM one can reach Solapur before sunset. Overall good roads. Great improvement over 2010 trip I had undertaken.

How is the stretch from Bijapur to Solapur? Is it double-laned? I am told there's a lot of truck traffic on that route, but I may be wrong.
