True. Ride becomes bumpy if you cross 60 kmph. Also the average speed through this route comes down as it passes through few villages, few narrow stretches, and high human movement on the roads at few places though vehicular traffic is less. But I liked the drive since it was through countryside and was scenic.

That's nice. Would like to try that route Hosur-Rayakottai-Vellichandai-Karimangalam some day. How are the roads?

Hosur-Rayakottai road is a very good 2 lane road. After crossing Rayakottai as you proceed towards Palacode, you will reach a 4 road junction at a village called Vellichandai. From here you have to take a left to proceed towards Karimangalam.
Vellichandai-Karimangalam stretch is also a good one. I recollect the roads being slightly narrow at some places. As you near Karimangalam, the roads are very narrow. You can expect traffic inside Karimangalam town.
From here you can ask the locals how to go to Kambainallur. From here on the roads are good overall.

Here is the route link

re: Bangalore - Thiruvannamalai : Route Queries

Been to tiruvannamalai from Bangalore last weekend (1-2 Nov 2014). The defaut route now shown by google maps is the Hosur-Krishnagiri-Karimangalam-Harur-Thanipadi-Tiruvannamalai.

As mentioned many times in the forum, this route is very good. Infact, it reminds me of the regular (shortest) - Mathur-chengam route from 6 years back. The route after the 4/6 lane highway is a consistent 2 lane good road for about 70 km. For the last stretch is 2 lane and not freshly laid. But still 60-80 kmph easily doable.

Thank the good people of this community who keep pouring information on the forum about the various routes and make everyones life easier.

Thanx for the updates. Yes right from Naripalli onwards till T V Malai the patchwork on the roads is such that the drive becomes bumpy in excess of 60 kmph. Otherwise good to drive.

I will suggest the following route

Via Hosur, Krishnagiri, Kambainallur,Morappur, Harur, Thanipadi, T V Malai GH. After reaching T V Malai GH, ask for Gorimettu street. This small road leads you to Thirukkoilur by pass road.

In Tirukkoilur we have the famous Ulagalandha perumal temple (Part of 108 divya desams) and a famous Ranganathar Temple called Adhi Thiruvarangam in Manalurpet near Thirukkoilur.
Adhi Thiruvarangam is much more ancient than Srirangam. This temple does not close for lunch.I have mentioned only about the Vaishnava temples.

As regards the road condition, till harur the roads are good. Post Harur, we have broken roads here and there. My friend had been to T V malai some time back recently. He said he took solid 2 hrs from Harur to T V Malai.

Hope this helps.

Please note, I dont think you can find Kabinallur easily. The point look on the 4-lane is Karimangalam. This would be about 22km from the Chennai turn-off towards Salem. You can see a board for Morappur and furthur to Harur at this point just before the flyover.

At Harur please ask your friend NOT to ask for the route to Thirunammalai. Because if he does, its very likely that they will divert him to Chengam and thus the broken NH66. At Harur, in case if he gets lost, he should ask for Thanipadi and not Thiruvannamalai.

Mate After reaching harur instead of asking thanipadi i would suggest you to ask for directions to Theerthamalai as this place comes immediately after harur.

Thanks Suresh. Seems like the human element is still in place on this route. Are these roads so less traveled that they are not on maps? or that, they are on maps but a new guy may not be able to spot them. For the first time on T-BHP, I heard 'ask for directions' in a route :-). This is getting interesting.

I have shared all the inputs with my friend, and he was thankful and each and everyone of you. Regards to all.

These places are very much on google maps. Infact i had been on this stretch in the last week of december. Instead of totally relying on google maps I would recommend you to ask the locals if in doubt. I follow the same practice and it is safe. Sometimes google maps can mislead you

The question is not about the road being less travelled. The issue is that NH66 is the main arterial road (supposedly!) to Tiruvannamalai. So Google by default routing tries to guide you through that route. Hence the misleading. But if you want to go on a route which is not the default option in Google, you will have to ask or you will have to know.

Thanks for clarifying for what it is. Makes perfect sense. I would have blindly followed Route 66 (!). One reason why I depend more on maps (or a pre-programmed GPS route) is that, the route itself wont lie (or cant lie). I have had experiences wherein I have been sent to different places (during old times), based on the directions given by people. I think language is a barrier sometimes or the person may have misunderstood the destination. Anyway, if we dont have paper maps, and if we dont know where we are going, then we have no business in going there.
