Hi, As you will start from Hennur and plan to come towards KR Puram to reach Tumkur, I would suggest you to check the STRR (Satelite Town Ring Road). The Hoskote to Doddabspet stretch is already completed and is operational for about an year now. This will help you in getting to Tumkur in a very short duration. In August while traveling back from Gokarna through the Bangalore - Pune highway, this route saved us more than an hour (as per G maps) in the evening. If you start early morning, it may not make that much of a difference but this road is is pristine condition and will definitely be less tiring by avoiding some of the early morning truck traffic. Apoorva is good for breakfast, we could reach that place in about 4-4.5 hours by starting at 4/4.30AM from Whitefield side last year in June and taking the ORR & Nelmangala route at that time.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

I took off-beat routes to and from Goa between Saturday Dec 8 and and Monday Dec 10.

To South Goa:
Bangalore - Davangere - Bankapura Toll booth - Shingapur - Konankeri - Mundgod - Yellapur - Arabail - Baleguli - Karwar (lunch at Shweta Lunch Home) - Cancona (Rs 1000 Donation for Nation Building - read it as speed check - doing 78 in 70 zone) - Madgaon - Vasco.

For Return:
Vasco - Old Goa - Sanquelim - Valpoi - Usgaon - NH748 Mollem - (Watch out for Speed Guns here) - Anmod - Castlerock - Jagalbet - Ganeshgudi - Dandeli - Haliyal - Dharwad - NH48 - Home run.

All the sections above are great for any SUV (SPresso - to - Defender and everything in between). The Low Slung Sedans can do it too provided that you keep the eyes glued to the road. The jungle sections - go easy - nothing to worry, just avoid potholes by being slow and not bending alloys.

Goa is getting crowded by the way!

Hope I can take the same route for a return from Cavelossim to Bangalore.

Any must have eateries that anyone can suggest enroute? For a 5AM start, will breakfast and lunch options be over by Bankapur?

Any fuel pumps/COCO pumps on this route?
There’s an HPCL COCO next to ONGC which has owned around 10 months ago.

This fuel station falls on the route from cavelossim to cabo-de-Rama.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Did Whitefield-South Goa today via Ramnagar-Anmod. This is my 5th or 6th time via Anmod in the past 3 years and the status is the same. The bad stretches are well marked, no surprises and really bad (5-6 usual spots - railway crossings, couple of kms near Anmod etc). The remaining parts the surface is good and doesnt have too many potholes. Have not done the Karwar route recently, so dont have the means to compare. As of now, Anmod is doable by all vehicles as long as you take the bad stretches slowly. Did it in 10.5 hours of sedate driving and another 1 hour for breaks. The cops with speedguns were present in the usual spots around Mollem. The Goa registration vehicles were sticking to the 60 kmph limits and it was mostly the visitors getting caught.

If you like seafood/fish, Coastal Crown in Yellapur is a good option for lunch. Last year we stopped there on both legs of our trip.
Do share how is the road between Bankapura and Yellapur.

I am thinking if I can try part of this route on my onward trip ... from Ramnagar, turn right towards Jagalbet, then rejoin SH after Castlerock. How is the scenary on this route? I drive a hatchback with good GC that has done well on the regular route via Tinai Ghat in the past.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Enroute Goa - Bengaluru. Driving a new Kia Sonet iMT. I decided to avoid both Chorla & Anmod Ghats after reading about bad road conditions.
  • Drove Panaji - Karwar - Baleguli Cross - Arabail Ghat - Yellapur - Kalaghatgi - Anchetgiri - NH-48 to Chitradurga (466 kms).
  • Did not go for the Yellapur - Mundgod - Bankapura road, instead went up north till off Hubli and did the 50 extra kms.
  • Roads within Goa is nice.
  • Karwar to Yellapur, only a 8 km stretch in Arabail Ghat is bad but no major issues if you just take it easy.
  • Yellapur to off Hubli is in good condition and then NH48 is good.
  • Left Panaji at 0700 & reached Chitradurga at 1700 with breakfast and lunch stops.
  • Halting overnight at Myspace Chindanur Comforts hotel.
  • Will drive off at 0800 tomorrow to make it to Ikea @Nagasandra, Bengaluru around 1100 (opening time) since my wife has a carload of shopping, before heading out to stay with family at Haralur.

Hey Bencharles, seems like this could be the better option than driving all the way to Belgavi for my upcoming BLR-Morjim trip. Would you by any chance have a gmaps link of this route? This would be my first time to Goa by Road from BLR and I don't want to get lost on the route due to google maps' smartness to save 30 mins.

Yes. It's the primary route (Hubli - Yellapur to Ankola and further down towards Mangalore) for trucks and buses plying from coastal Karnataka to Pune / Mumbai. Hence there are full night eateries enroute.

Ankola to Karwar is about 30 Kms or so, most part being 4 lane highway and is in excellent condition.

Further the entire stretch from Yellapur to Karwar is safe to drive after dusk. It's a fairly busy traffic route.

From the previous post, regular route via ramnagar seem to be drivable without the rains, I see even Google maps suggesting the same now, so any specific reason for the detour ? I am planning to drive over the weekend so checking.

Hi....my reason is mainly for exploring a new route and the scenery since it just adds 20 mins. But regular route via Tinai Ghat is fine as per several posts by others in this thread.
