Hello Pavan,
  • You will be too early for the Dose at Davangere, they open around 7:30 - 8:00 AM, you will reach Hubli in 5.5 hours.
  • For Lunch, Veg only, K Plus Veg restaurant in Karwar, or Indraprashta in Yellapur.
There are some new diversions and they are not well marked nor lit, use the Maps when driving towards Hubli.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Hello Everyone,

Posting again on this thread after a year. My prev. Goa trip didn't materialize.

This time I am planning to start from Bengaluru( Hennur, North Blr) next weekend ( 14th), planning to stay overnight at Hubballi and planning to reach my destination in North Goa on the 15th.

1. Please suggest a recommended route. Appreciate a feedback from soneone who has recently travelled.

2. Breakpoints for Lunch and breakfast ( Bangalore to Hubballi)

3. Is there a better place , may be after Hubballi for the overnight stay ? Considering that Bangalore to Hubballi road is good and I may not be tired much.

4. Don't want to start too early from Bangalore.

Thanks for your feedback!

Many thanks to the useful suggestions from folks.

Started from Bengalooroooo eventually at 440 AM (still consider it an achievement with a 4yo & 9mo and more importantly the wife ). Reached South Goa (Varca) at 5PM including 2 food breaks, and 1 puke break for the kid and a 1.5 hour jam in the mountains after Yellapur due to a multi-axle lorry that flipped over in a turn. Apparently the incident happened at 5am and traffic was fully stuck for 3 hours. There was still a 1.5 hour jam at 2pm.

The roads till Tumkur are not great patchy and with potholes. The proper highway roads really only start after the Santoor soap factory after Tumkur. Even at early hours of the day that's 80km from the CBD area of not being able to cruise and cover good distance quickly ! And there is significant truck traffic on this route more than other highways.

Tumkur - Hubli bypass is good. Can hold good speeds and cover distance quickly and happily.

As advised, I avoided 2-3 suspicious shortcuts shown by Mr G including the Bankapur road. It probably was a good decision since the other two shortcuts were single lane mud roads !

The going is good till Yellapur as mentioned, by in general Yellapur - Ankola is a bit annoying. 30-40km of the road after Yellapur is quite broken but there are some unpredictable bone jarring suspension breaking potholes and bad patches all the way till Ankola. It's funny that this is the better route compared to the Dharwad - Anmod route, so that must be worse. That said, if one is in a Fortuner or a blue-blooded SUV Thar, Jimny or even the Compass, you can fly over the bad streches without much bother, but for the rest of the cars, it will slow you down and is a bit more annoying.

Karwar to South Goa was unremarkable, except the speed limits on the Goa side were 70 for cars and many seemed to follow this even on the good two lane roads. Also saw two sets of cops with speed guns enforcing this.

Just got a different experience, I may try the Anmod ghat route on the way back (planning a 6am departure from Varca beach). Or is it that bad that I should avoid the Anmod ghat and stick to the Karwar route ?

These multi axle trucks have their own set of problems in the ghats. Anmod, Yellapur and even the Canacona Karmal ghat.

Well the Anmod route is much faster to Bangalore with the exception of a 10km stretch of road between Anmod to Tinai Ghat, which is work in progress. Any car can manoeuvre that section slowly.

On a lighter note, this was an article published in the local daily.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

We have booked in Goa from 22nd to 25th in Panjim. This time wanted to avoid an early morning travel. So planning to leave home around 9 am on 21st and looking at options for night halt.

Obvious choice would be Hubli/Dharwad but I am not very keen on travelling via the slow, not so scenic Ramnagar, Tinai country route next morning:

1) Can I target to halt at Karwar or South Goa on 21st late evening or will it be risky to drive beyond Yellapur after dusk?

2) How about Yellapur for a night halt? Am not finding great hotel options online. Also, which route should one take for Yellapur. Gmaps still suggests Bankapura-Mundgod but last Dec we had gone via Tadas-Kalaghatgi thanks to timely updates by BHPians on this thread.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Hi Everyone,

Planning to drive down to Goa from Bangalore on 28th afternoon. We take it a bit slow with a toddler in tow. So normally we take an overnight break each side. Not a regular on this route since we are new to Bangalore and are normally used to Mumbai-Goa scene. Hence, had a few questions:

1. Google Maps shows 2 possible routes to our destination in Morjim (as in the screenshot). The first one goes left from Dharwad and the other from MK Hubli. We have a sedan. Accordingly, which route could be the best to travel without damaging the suspensions. And least congestion.

2. Hubli, Dharwad or any other place on the route for night cap? We generally leave about a 4-6 hours of drive for the next day We last stayed at the Fortune in Hubli (Opp airport) and it was a decent stay. Anything similar, and preferably closer to Goa?

3. Good food joints on the way with clean washrooms?. I gathered Apoorva for benne dose and others in previous posts. Someone mentioned Kamat Upachar as well. Anything that is not in here? Especially local non-veg cuisine.

Looking forward to hearing back from you experienced folks.

I drove to Morjim from Bangalore just last week, in my Thar. I would suggest the more simple and direct Belgavi-Tilari Nagar-Pernem-Morjim route. That is way better than the left turns from Dharwad or MK Hulbi that you mentioned (those are Chorla ghat roads with plenty of broken roads and potholed sections).

In the route I took and I suggest (Belgavi-Tilari Nagar-Pernem-Morjim) there is still some bad road after you take left from Belgavi, for about 20km, but that is still the lesser evil (or the least evil) out of all other options to Goa now.

Also, stick to the main roads after Tilari Nagar. Do NOT take some forest shortcuts that Google Maps suggests. See my travel story of one such shortcut here: https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-...ml#post5890986 (My 2023 Mahindra Thar Petrol AT 4x4 | Ownership Review | “Dusty” Reborn in 4x4)

Both Hubli and Dharwad have plenty of stay options. Belgavi too is a good option of stay for you. Fairfield by Marriott in Belgavi is my usual stay option if I have to stay there. But there are plenty of other options too.

Have a nice and safe drive!

Thank you Dr.AD. I tried to map your suggested route on GMAPs. Is this the route you mentioned? So I am assuming that this route via Tilari road is better than other routes and "less" pot ridden, and it takes almost same time.

By the way, I was very used to Chorla Ghat route when I was in Mumbai. It used to be one of the most scenic and well maintained road. Looks like it's best days are now in past.

Thanks for the heads up on "shortcuts"

Cheers!

Yes! This is the "relatively" best road to Morjim. However, funnily, even in your map Google Maps has suggested the same shortcut that I suffered from (well, actually, enjoyed in my Thar but will never want to drive there in a sedan).

I have marked that bad shortcut in red color and given the alternative main road by green marker in the image below. I hope you get the idea from this.

Actually not just better, this is also the fastest route to Morjim area. In your very first map, this route is the light blue route suggested by Google Maps with the fastest time too (12h 19m; 645km). Not sure why you chose the other route that was 12h 31m and 649km instead.

I have also driven on Chorla ghat many times even from Bangalore. It used to be the mainstream route, but not anymore since last few years. It is quite a challenging route in the current state. It will improve again as lot of road work is in progress and hope they soon finish all that and fix the entire stretch.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Hi All,

I have been scouring through the routes mentioned here for a good Bengaluru to Goa route, and I am unfortunately a bit confused.
So, apologies in advance if I ask again for a good route for my journey.

I have broken down what I would like to know further into these questions:

1. My destination is Durgavado on 27th. Which is the best route to take?

2. I plan to start at 4 AM, as from what I have read here, it seems like a good idea to start early to reach Durgavado by 2/3 PM. Is it doable?

3. Any good breakfast and lunch places we could try?

4. Approximately, how much toll charges should I be prepared for?

5. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), I have to start back for Bengaluru on Dec 31, and I plan to start back at 4 AM that day too. Any routes I should avoid to reach back before Bengaluru new year traffic sets in?

TIA!

1. Breakfast places - Depending on what time you leave, Apoorva Resorts near Davengere, plenty of parking, quick service.

2. Halting at Hubli - if you are leaving early, you will reach Hubli, withing 6 hours. Road after Tumkur is good and is not a tiring drive, but a boring one.

3. Consider staying in Yellapur - Accha Comforts Inn(I have not stayed here), Or Banana County Resorts (have stayed here) is a decent option.

Looks like another route to give a try for the upcoming holiday season trip from Bangalore!!
